singpolyma3··on GPT-6.1 Sol replaces GPT-6 Sol after just 7 days, with near-Astra intelligence
They've been pretty capable for a very long time. I don't think the models are getting more capable so much as people are getting better at using them and more people are getting the opportunity to be impressed.
singpolyma3··on Dots: Always-on agents
why would anyone make a new model when we already have so many?
singpolyma3··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
Google helped make XMPP quite popular for awhile, then killed their own product and left us with a lot of useful specs they had contributed. So I'm not sure I'd call that EEE
singpolyma3··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
Instead of TCP+XML it's HTTP+JSON

The IRC is just a front end. Could use any front end

singpolyma3··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
So rooms are "global" between whatever hosts your host happens to know about? So it's one giant netsplit party forever and only your server admin can ban someone?
singpolyma3··on Show HN: Panda, the world's first personal AI computer
No specs. No examples of models it can run. No idea if any of the source will be available.

Basically vapourware.

Yes. You've described the problem very well
singpolyma3··on "As a Language Model": Chat Template Switches LLM Self-Referential Voice
Why not? "Them" is a generic pronoun for anything. Boats, cars, computers, all of them

singpolyma3··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
No?
singpolyma3··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
This is exactly what I said. The obsession with grades (GPA) over education is the cause here. Intentionally making the education worse in order to protect the grading system.
singpolyma3··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
The students who want to learn aren't having the AI do it for them. And they will learn better in the evidence based system.

The ones who don't want to learn will cheat themselves of an education. This is their own problem and we shouldn't punish the actual students to catch these others.

singpolyma3··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
Good math grading is looking at things you can't trivially automate. Process, proofs, etc
singpolyma3··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
That's a terrible model though. If someone is paying to be taught and you just hand them video lectures... We already have video lectures at home. Why would they pay you? What product are you meaningfully offering in that world?
singpolyma3··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
> For example, the evidence favors frequent low-stakes assessments with feedback (e.g., homework, quizzes) over few high-stakes ones (e.g., exams) – but AI is undermining practice in low-stakes settings and pushing us more toward exams.

Only because you're obsessed with being able to assign grades and fail cheaters.

singpolyma3··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
As someone who has been using iOS for a year and a half, the UX is much worse IMO.

The extra steps android is adding are annoying, but you can still run your own code easily and others' code with a few steps

singpolyma3··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
Why would you ever use a bank app? It's just going to end up storing financial information on your mobile which will then get stolen.
singpolyma3··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
I don't see how "android isn't worth it" when you go on to admit iOS is worse... App Store also a big pain and no usable workaround
singpolyma3··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
For 8*6? I definitely don't know either of the 8 or 6 tables by memory.

I of course know how to figure it out. Let's see my instinct might be to do 8x2 first because I do know most of the 2s. Then 16x3 I can do in a few steps of addition. 20+12+16 then 48

And yes then I checked on my calculator because I'm posting this online and don't want to look like an idiot.

singpolyma3··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
I wrote long columns of galloping additions in the margin because calculators weren't allowed.

I mean yes, I have some "facts" in my memory because of repeated exposure. I know 2x2 and 5x5 but the whole table? Not a chance.

singpolyma3··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
I mean, my kids can both do mental math because it's something they sort of absorbed along the way. But yeah I don't super value it as something to focus on. I've never done laundry without a washing machine nor would I know how to teach someone how. Though I'm sure I could look it up.
singpolyma3··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
Yes sure. I do remember many things. But drilling facts doesn't seem like the way.
singpolyma3··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
As someone who never memorized these tables and has a degree in mathematics... I don't agree
singpolyma3··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
You don't need to know how to do the work without the tool. Knowing how to add two numbers together is not the point. Knowing what numbers to add and why is what you need. Just computing the answer hasn't been an interesting skill in my whole lifetime.
singpolyma3··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
> Why bother learning to retain any information when AI knows everything and can recall it in a split second.

This is a real question though. One I've been asking since the early 00s. Learning means something different than it did in decades previous. Merely remembering easy to look up facts is not the slam dunk it used to be.

singpolyma3··on The GitHub wiki is an anti-pattern (2022)
The GitHub wiki is not a real wiki. It cannot be edited by most people.
