I would strongly recommend steering clear of Nylas.
singingwolfboy··on Apple Introduces AirTag
It's worth noting that the new Siri Remote for Apple TV does not have a U1 chip (the technology that powers AirTag), and so will not be findable in the Find My app. If you want to be able to find your Siri Remote easily, you'll need to buy an AirTag separately and strap it to the remote.

singingwolfboy··on Ask HN: What weird or hard problems are you trying to solve?
Let’s say you have multiple people who want to share their location with each other, but to different degrees of precision. Some people might be willing to share their street address, while others only want to share the city that they live in. Some only want to say “Northern New Jersey”, or “Southern France”. Some might want to just share their timezone.

How do you store this information in a database, in a geographically meaningful way? How do you represent it on a map?

singingwolfboy··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good database schema designs?
PostGraphile [1] is a framework for generating a GraphQL API based on the tables in your database; as a result, good database design is crucial. Graphile Starter [2] is a quickstart project that demonstrates best practices for getting up and running with PostGraphile quickly. In particular, check out the SQL migration file in that project [3]. It demonstrates:

1. Dividing up tables so that one user can have more than one email address

2. Using PostgreSQL’s “row-level security” system to restrict database results based on the logged in user

3. Dividing tables across multiple schemas for additional security

4. SQL comments for documentation

5. SQL functions for common functionality, such as logging in or verifying an email

It’s a fascinating project, and well worth a look!

singingwolfboy··on Launch HN: Freshpaint (YC S19) – Automated, Retroactive Alternative to Segment
Any time I hear about a hot new analytics company, my first thought is always: how do I opt out?

Freshpaint, how do I opt out of your data collection? Now, into the future, and also for any historical data that you might have collected about me.

You be good. I love you.
singingwolfboy··on Show HN: Scar – Static websites with HTTPS, a global CDN, and custom domains
I wrote a tutorial for how to do all this setup manually, if you prefer: https://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/host-static-site-aws...

Sometimes it’s nice to understand how all the pieces fit together, instead of using an automated system!

singingwolfboy··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
Check out my website: https://www.quietstrengthhypnosis.com/ The “Learn” section has some good information about hypnosis.

I’d also be happy to chat more about this one on one, if you’d like. No obligation to actually schedule a session; I don’t charge for chatting and answering questions. :) Shoot me an email: david@quietstrengthhypnosis.com

singingwolfboy··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
Usually dealing with stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Sometimes helping people change habits: work out more, lose weight, etc.
singingwolfboy··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
I’m a hypnotist. Most of my clients are through word-of-mouth referrals, although I do have a website, as well. It’s an unusual skill that I developed over many years, and I enjoy being able to help people. It’s a fun conversation topic at parties, as well. :)

singingwolfboy··on Hosting My Static Site
The author didn't even consider hosting on AWS directly, using S3? It's super cheap -- the biggest expense is buying a domain and hosting DNS. And HTTPS is straightforward as well, thanks to Certificate Manager!

I recently wrote a tutorial for how to get a static site set up with S3 and CloudFront: https://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/deploy-static-site-a... I'm curious if others would find it useful?

God, that website looks awful in a small browser window.
singingwolfboy··on Ask HN: Source of extra income, no programming involved?
In addition to being a software engineer, I'm also a consulting hypnotist. (quietstrengthhypnosis.com) I find that the deeply interpersonal work I do with hypnosis makes a nice contrast with the deeply logical work I do in software -- they exercise two different sides of my brain, and when I get tired of one, I get more motivated with the other. I've also found that doing hypnosis has improved my ability to focus and achieve "flow" when programming -- "flow" is itself a trance state.

The work is rewarding, both on a financial basis and on a personal basis (I'm helping to improve peoples' lives). It was surprisingly simple to learn how to do hypnosis, as well -- it's mostly a matter of projecting a relaxing demeanor and being able to read body language. And it's a great conversation-starter!

If you're curious to know more, I'm happy to answer questions: my email is on my website. (Just let me know that you found me through HN!)
