singemonkey··on Pfizer submits Covid vaccine to FDA for approval, to distribute in December
Please cite the lengthy list of institutions that have failed us all.
singemonkey··on Arecibo telescope, on the brink of collapse, will be dismantled
Quick and probably very inaccurate calculation

Arecibo cost $9.3 million in 1963. This is equal to $79,000,000 now (https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1963?amount=93000...).

An F-35 costs about $100 million.

Based on that, I'd be happy to give up a single F-35 to rebuild Arecibo.

singemonkey··on TailwindCSS v2.0
I don't think they were being condescending – there's a lot of material out there on why Tailwind is good, it's easy to find via Google, but nothing beats trying it out.

If you don't want to do that then you could watch some of Adam Wathan's screencasts on YouTube where he uses Tailwind to recreate pages or build new ones.

singemonkey··on Apple Announces App Store Small Business Program
Oh wow, my bad, I honestly thought you were joking.

You may need to rethink your arguments as I found them indistinguishable from parody!!

singemonkey··on Apple Announces App Store Small Business Program
Tone can be hard to judge, so you should append the /s tag to make it clear you're joking, otherwise people are going to assume you mean it.
singemonkey··on Britain to ban new petrol cars and vans by 2030 on road to net zero emissions
When did Trump and Johnson push for liberalism?
singemonkey··on 2020 Mac Mini – Putting Apple Silicon M1 To The Test
Actually it's very impressive.
singemonkey··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
Entirely reasonable of OP to posit bad faith on your part, especially given how you've reacted and the way you constructed a strawman to get upset about.

That's on you, not anyone else.

singemonkey··on Open Source does not mean “Includes Free Support”
> I may have contributed hundreds or thousands of dollars of my time to the project

Sure, but that was you deciding to do it, and it's commendable.

This is very different from someone emailing you and telling you to (or expecting that you will) donate thousands of dollars of your time to a project.

singemonkey··on Conservatives flock to Parler, claiming censorship on Facebook and Twitter
> They can't do that AND profess to support free speech within their club.

Sorry, but they can and do.

This is a group of people that will happily shut down your speech while proclaiming themselves to be the defenders of free speech and liberty.

They will happily insult you, but are quick to play victim and complain about being oppressed and harassed and insulted.

singemonkey··on Open Source does not mean “Includes Free Support”
What's weird about someone refusing to spend their limited time on things they don't want to deal with?

Or do you think that reading and comprehension are activities that take no time at all, and therefore have no cost attached to them?

singemonkey··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
I really do feel sorry for you.

I hope you get better one day and rejoin humanity.

singemonkey··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
As a reply to your previous comment explains, this "fact" is not a false story.

Clever of you to only link to the second interview, although it does come across as a touch disingenuous.

Your comment here actually did make me happy, so thanks for that!

> HN is now the same as every other online community: trash.

A trash community where you're posting over 10 times a day...

Seriously, if you hate this community so much, why not find somewhere else where you don't get so angry?

singemonkey··on Designing Raspberry Pi 400
The person you responded to is asking a question. I don't get why you need to be so weirdly sarcastic. (I have theories, but they're quite denigrating towards you, so I'll refrain from airing them)

Anyway, I look forward to your explanation, and perhaps we can find a way to help you interact more successfully with human beings?

singemonkey··on The West has failed – US and Europe have made a mess of handling the crisis
dang, once again, can you do something about this rancid xenophobia. It has no place in a serious discussion.

Thanks.

singemonkey··on Cellular immunity to SARS-CoV2 found at 6 months in non-hospitalised individuals
You probably shouldn't rely on some random HN poster for your definition of what herd immunity means. It's a well defined term in the epidemiological field, and definitions are readily available via sites such as Wikipedia and search engines.
singemonkey··on The West has failed – US and Europe have made a mess of handling the crisis
Please stop parroting this kind of misinformation.

dang, why are you allowing this kind of shit on here? Please step up and sort this out.

singemonkey··on Vaccine hopes rise as Oxford jab prompts immune response among old and young
Please provide evidence for this.

(To avoid misunderstandings, evidence does not mean your unverified opinions).

I'm particularly interested in your methodology for arriving at 0.5%, so a detailed data dump on that from you would be very useful.

singemonkey··on After 14 years a new printed UK Amiga magazine
I also rejoined ACM last year (after a 10 year hiatus), mainly for access to the O'Reilly stuff (what used to be safarionline). Tremendous value, and the monthly ACM mag is actually quite interesting.
singemonkey··on Vaccine hopes rise as Oxford jab prompts immune response among old and young
As well as acquiring immunity without being infectious.

However, the efficacy of this vaccine (and all the other candidates) still needs to be clarified - ie is it like a measles vaccination (~90% efficacy) or the flu vaccines (~ 25% - 50% I believe).

singemonkey··on PHP 8: Before and After
Perhaps some developers who already know PHP want to get on with building things instead spending time comparing language penis lengths?
singemonkey··on WordPress's Matt in debate with Netlify's Matt
For non-technical people who just want to create content, I'd recommend a hosted service, like Squarespace, Wix, etc. Even wordpress.com if they want something relatively simply and 'bloggy'.

I've stopped recommending the self-hosted (wordpress.org) version to non technical people (even if it's a 1 click hosting platform), because there are just too many things that can go wrong, particularly with plugins.

As a developer, my experience with Statamic and Laravel has been joyful, compared to WP.

singemonkey··on WordPress's Matt in debate with Netlify's Matt
I've been a WP developer for more than 10 years and have had enough.

I'm doing what I can to persuade clients that WP isn't the only solution, and that CMS's like Statamic and frameworks like Laravel can be a viable and cost effective solution.

singemonkey··on Google is killing unlimited Drive storage for non-enterprise users
Such a weird take on the situation.

Why do you think it's ok for company to offer unlimited services knowing that it's not really unlimited?

Shouldn't you be advocating for companies to be more truthful in their marketing?

singemonkey··on Google is killing unlimited Drive storage for non-enterprise users
