Again, if you subscribe to the principle of free speech, it would be wrong for the police to remove people trying to advance new or even repugnant seeming ideas.

Direct threats to violence though will likely not be protected as it would stifle free speech. But, saying that some speech could "maybe" or "potentially" lead to violence down the line is usually not an argument against allowing it.

Besides, it should ideally be a democratically elected civil government who decides these matters, not for profit private companies and its leaders.

If you believe in the principle of free speech you might be better positioned by saying that everyone is welcome to come to the town square, but if you make poor speech then you will be refuted.
simula67··on Terminating Service for 8Chan
I am saying that public forums like the Internet is a kind of shared resource. It is the new town square.

Even private property rights have limits: a factory owner cannot pollute a water supply for personal profit. If you believe in free speech it can be argued that it should not be OK for a company like Cloudflare to pollute public discourse by injecting the biases of its leaders into it. They should not be allowed to ban certain types of speech by fiat.

I am arguing that if you believe in free speech, it must be admitted that that it is deeply immoral for them to get involved. It is up to their users to define what does and does not cross the line and respond with counter-arguments.

If a message and its opposing message has equal access to the platform for rebroadcast, the platform is not supporting any particular message.

Free speech is a cultural value. It sometimes manifests itself in the form of codified laws like the first amendment to the US Constitution. However, free speech is not limited to the USA.

The idea behind free speech is that people are allowed to put forward new ideas ( especially ideas about how to organize society, what is good and moral etc ) so that people can consider and accept or reject them. The idea is that no entity has a monopoly on truth and if you want to propagate your ideas, make your arguments persuasive and refute your opponents' arguments.

Free speech is ultimately a bet on human capacity for reason and goodness. The idea is that good ideas should win adherents and bubble to the top while bad ideas sink to the bottom as they lose followers.

Sometimes, governments are the most powerful enemy of free speech while sometimes other entities can be.

I am not saying free speech is a good thing, but there is no "exclusive to government" limiting principle to free speech.

simula67··on Goldman Sachs is spending $100M to shave milliseconds off stock trades
A simpler solution might be to just increase the transaction tax
simula67··on Robinhood raises $323M at a $7.6B valuation
Does Robinhood sell data on various order types like limit, stop-loss, etc to High-Frequency Traders? That would allow the HFTs to extract profits out of Robinhood's users since this information does not appear to be non-public and hence can be used for front-running.

I would assume that the tariffs would be a temporary measure. At the moment, there is no semiconductor industry in India to speak of and allowing foreign businesses in would mean that Indian companies would not have a fighting chance. If the industry takes off, I think the tariffs would be removed and the Indian companies would be forced to compete or sell themselves.
simula67··on India is now producing the world’s cheapest solar power
This is great news! India is extremely energy deficient and imports a large quantity of oil. Reducing petroleum dependency can help reduce poverty in India as more production can be consumed domestically and not sent abroad.

simula67··on China ready to hit back at U.S. with rare earths
> It also seems that in contrast to what you say, other countries are setting up to move away from China, to Vietnam, say.

As living standards in China rise, cost of manufacture in China was bound to rise. The Chinese have been preparing for this for quite some time. They have started automation and have begun an ambitious plan of infrastructure lead development called BRI and countries like Italy has signed up to join the project.

> I wonder what recourse the CCP really has.

I would assume plenty. China can slowly start dumping US treasuries and stop buying more. China can sanction US companies like Apple operating in China. China can start bilateral trade agreements with other countries and use it's financial clout to demand de-dollarization and move international trade to a more neutral currency like the IMF SDR. China can buy more oil from Iran. China can invade Taiwan. China can refuse to honor sanctions against North Korea etc

simula67··on Linux Storage, Filesystem, and Memory-Management Summit
I used to work for a hyper converged infrastructure provider which had an option to aggregate all the disks in a computing cluster and expose it as an NFS filesystem. You can then enable fault tolerance, compression, encryption etc on a file system level.

> So for #1 and #2, you just hand-wave your doctrine as "miracles" that defy all otherwise known and consistent laws of the universe. Doesn't seem like intellectual integrity to me.

It is not intellectually dishonest to believe that God, who governs the universe and it's laws is able to suspend them if he so chooses.

> Why don't you admit that the reason the Catholic church does not allow women priests is not because "a women's function is laborious" (a function not all women naturally can even do, otherwise why can't barren women be priests?), but rather because you take the words of Paul literally and do not allow a woman to hold authority over a man? That's the real reason and you know it.

No, that is not the real reason. The idea that men and women are complementary is rooted in Christian teaching since the beginning. My understanding is that the reason women are not allowed to be priests is partly because during mass the priest stands in for Christ ( in persona Christi ) and Christ was born a man. Women hold authority over men all the time in the Catholic church, many doctors of the Church are women.

> Also, the "faith alone" thing is a bit misunderstood to be honest, mostly caused by how protestants overload that word. They basically mean that you cannot be saved by works alone under any circumstance, and that if you are unable to produce any works but have faith, you can still be saved (the example here is the penitent thief on the cross). After that, they consider works to be a natural outcome of legitimate faith, and that if you have the chance to do works and don't you'll lose your justification by faith.

This is just a long winded way of saying you are not saved by faith alone.

simula67··on System76 News: Coreboot and Linux Advances
This is probably why the 'Year of the Linux Desktop' never arrived. The introduction of Macs probably crippled the Linux desktop market. Without Macs companies like System76 would probably have been more successful as more developers demand a good quality Unix compatible machine.

Same with Russia. USA turned off GPS during the Russo-Georgian war. Russia went ahead to build GLONASS and it's military performance during the intervention in Syrian Civil War was much better.

Others have pointed to PHP REPLs. Perl 5 also has a REPL : https://metacpan.org/pod/Devel::REPL. Perl 6 comes with a REPL built-in. Unlike Python/Ruby, Perl does not have a GIL and with some discipline it can be used in large programs.

simula67··on Notarizing Your App Before Distribution
You can avoid using systemd[1]. If you don't like the churn of desktop environments, may I suggest Xfce ? It is usable and does not overhaul things that often.

I personally prefer systemd and moved from Ubuntu to ArchLinux a long time ago in order to use it. But I agree with you, the constant overhaul of UI is a problem which is why I have stuck to Xfce for a long time. I however, do not use GIMP, but there may be other options out there.

By the way MacOS is Unix, it is a POSIX compliant OS. Also, you can run Linux on your Mac.

simula67··on YC Interviews in India
I think this is particularly uncharitable. YC is probably planning to invest in companies in India, we should be more charitable and not be unnecessarily antagonistic.

Also, I think this is unrealistic. Do you expect others to properly use the names of all cities ? For example : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kozhikode. The 'zh' sound is not present outside of a few South Indian languages. It is OK if others call it Calicut IMO

EDIT: It seems the OP has edited the comment to make it more polite. Thanks OP.

simula67··on ‘AWS vs. K8s’ Is the New ‘Windows vs. Linux’
I think the comparison that the author makes is that AWS and Kubernetes are both platforms that you code your apps to, just like Windows and Linux
simula67··on Chrome “clear cookies on exit” feature does not work
Agreed. When I open up Brave on my phone to use Google Newsreel or something, I feel that it is a bit more snappy than Firefox. Firefox also crashes more often than I would like on my ArchLinux personal laptop. However, Firefox rendering speed has caught up with Chrome since the Quantum update, maybe the rest will catch up also.
