simondanerd··on Show HN: I built an app to stop me doomscrolling by touching grass
Is there an Android version coming soon?

Also it would be better if you kept Instagram uninstalled... I see it installing on the screenshot!

simondanerd··on NASA employees advised to delay responses to Musk's "what did you do" email
I believe they're required to log hours worked once a week online and would therefore have access to a computer to reply. A separate email was sent out either yesterday or today (don't remember which, I'd have to check my email) was also sent out to supervisors of civilian employees as a reminder of the deadline.
simondanerd··on Mexico issues legal threat to Google
It already does happen like that: https://blog.google/products/maps/united-states-geographic-n...
simondanerd··on The largest sofa you can move around a corner
It always does. Always. Never a spare inch when moving a couch.
simondanerd··on Why do startups often have blog pages? is it for SEO?
If I haven't heard of a company before, I instantly see if they have a blog so I can judge if it's AI slop or an actual operation.

Anyone can write a website with react and make it look nice, including scammers who just want your money and never deliver a product. A good human-written blog goes a long way to build confidence.

simondanerd··on Ask HN: Is there any appetite for the return of "lickable" UIs?
The forcing of accessibility standards is what I think of first. It isn't a bad that things are accessible, just that it cuts down on creativity that's able to be expressed in the final product.
simondanerd··on We got hit by an alarmingly well-prepared phish spammer
I think that there's a difference between state sponsored hacking and a government turning a blind eye to illegal activities that happen to fulfill the same effect without their hands being dirtied. Incentives, such as potential future employment or the good graces of (more or less corrupt) local authorities when it comes to other illegal activities, can make a significant impact on influencing an adversaries' overall cyber readiness.
simondanerd··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
I know two people that are just now getting out of bed and able to do basic things, both diagnosed with Long COVID. Knew another that was sick for a year afterwards, and my brain can't hold info like it used to. It's ugly when it gets a hold of you, that's for sure.
simondanerd··on AI haters build tarpits to trap and trick AI scrapers that ignore robots.txt
In my opinion, if you access my content or web service, you accept the risk of not asking me first or knowing what's going to happen to the content when you do access it. It's mine, I've given you access, I'm not going to guarantee it's quality or how many times you'll need to try to get it before your scraper gets blocked for too many requests.
simondanerd··on Interview with Andy Yen, CEO of Proton VPN
I wouldn't think VPN Super Unlimited Proxy (https://www.mobilejump.mobi/) is on-par with Proton VPN (https://protonvpn.com/).

Still interesting that it's #10 though.

simondanerd··on Linux kernel could cut energy use in data centres by up to 30 per cent
Interesting optimization. If what they say is true, 30% is a lot, but I wonder how they arrived at those numbers and how well it would scale across various platforms and workloads.

And I count 822 lines changed, not 30.

simondanerd··on US to ban Russian, Chinese software and hardware in vehicles
I don't hesitate to put wrong addresses/names/data on all but the most important forms here in the USA. Email addresses? Catchall address to be whatever I want. Phone number? A rejection hotline or online burner number works a lot of the time.
simondanerd··on US to ban Russian, Chinese software and hardware in vehicles
> But does it violate Free Speech rights?

I'd expect that foreigners don't have the same rights as the constitution would grant a citizen. The same goes with a reasonable right to privacy - it generally only applies to citizens. The US government isn't there to protect the world (though they may appear to try sometimes).

simondanerd··on Google’s OAuth login doesn’t protect against purchasing a failed startup domain
I was able to take over an Instagram account because I received a password reset email to a domain catch all address that I'd set up years ago. Turns out it was a whole brand, but they refuse to change the email address and don't understand that I'm going to shut it all down. It totally makes my site look bad (it was an adultish brand and I was working on a community project) and I now have the power (and ability to do whatever with the account and any other that I happen upon with an email at that domain.
simondanerd··on Ask HN: How do you backup your Android?
Syncthing for loose files and exported backup configurations, SMS Backup & Restore Pro for text messages, radicale for calendar and contacts in addition to Zoho (email provider). Immich and Google photos sync photos in the background.
simondanerd··on A feature-rich Hacker News client
Reading (and replying) on Glider. Love it.
simondanerd··on ESET recommends Linux if your unsupported Windows 11 PC can't update from 10
It took a couple seconds on DuckDuckGo: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/download-windows-...
simondanerd··on Tell HN: Old-computers.com still rebooting since 2023
What I don't understand is what script kiddies hope to gain through the exploitation of relatively small sites like this, other than the rush of doing so, or the bragging rights that come from it.
simondanerd··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
I would hate to have that problem.

Probably, maybe, actually it would drive me crazy and bored. But I could find ways to use it.

simondanerd··on Dumping Memory to Bypass BitLocker on Windows 11
Correct, ran into this last night. Dislocker works though: https://github.com/Aorimn/dislocker
simondanerd··on Little Snitch: Network Monitor and Application Firewall for macOS
I've heard it said in relation to getting a new laptop with manufacturer cruft and using Dave's Boot And Nuke to do some cleanup: https://dban.org/
simondanerd··on US Dept Health proposes new cybersecurity rules to limit healthcare data leaks
"The proposals include encrypting data so it cannot be accessed, even if leaked, and requiring compliance checks to ensure networks meet cybersecurity rules."

I always would have thought that two of the most important favors to decrease risk of data leaks would have already been implemented - and yet it's 2024, just over half a century after DES encryption was put into use by the US government.

Healthcare is a huge beast to turn, but I'd hope to see actual consequences for companies that don't take action.

simondanerd··on How Uber tests payments in production

simondanerd··on U.S. Department of Defense – Detecting Agile BS [pdf] (2018)
Sharing this link to a buddy... He's a "full stack web developer" for the US Army and can't make an HTML page but sure can do "npm run start".
simondanerd··on HP discontinues online-only LaserJet printers in response to backlash
RPI - Raspberry Pi (https://www.raspberrypi.com)

CUPS - no longer an acronym, but used to be Common Unix Printing System. (https://www.cups.org/)

simondanerd··on Startups building balloons to hoist tourists
I feel like we tried to do something similar to this and it didn't go very well.

simondanerd··on HP discontinues online-only LaserJet printers in response to backlash
I have an HP Deskjet 2750e, tied to my HP+ account that I started to setup and canceled after getting the printer to a working state. It's now attached via USB to a RPI running CUPS. Now I have a printer that automatically pops up on my network (across OS's!) and works every time. I bought the refurbished Walmart branded ink for it too. Works great
simondanerd··on Inside a $1 radar motion sensor
Works, it's a weird feeling, speaking from experience. HF antennas can give some respectable burns too.

But the effects are debated and not entirely scientific: https://www.reddit.com/r/army/comments/13r6hod/i_keep_being_...

simondanerd··on Is Vortihost Any Good?
According to Whois.com, the domain was registered on October 28, 2023.

So do with that what you will. I can't find anything registered to Vortihost Ltd. online either.

Also no privacy policy or terms of conditions, their social links don't work... The reasons not to use the site continues.
