simmo9000··on The saddest “just ship it” story (2020)
I think this is a valid comment questioning where one puts their goalpost for their realisation of a funded MVP coming from their idea. The market has shifted alot from what it was 5 years ago... 10 years, 15, 20, 30...

Ideas are what has gotten humanity this far and I am happy to see technological advances, in product that makes me happy, that come from our Haxor within, so to speak.

It is a big ladder to climb between Idea and Product, one step at a time is the only way.

How would one possibly eat an elephant?

Tools are required, for catching, skinning, cooking blah blah... and help from folks can be another tool within your toolbox whilst you fly solo dev.

Is the statement that the elephant is now too big to catch? It is hard to find other hungry folk to help hunt a big thing? Where is the hunting ground? Where do you get helping from other hungry solo devs to kill an elephant with only your inputs of skill, effort and time?

simmo9000··on Ask HN: What made your business take off that you wish you'd done much earlier?
And... More importantly understand what YOU want!

Set your goals as to what will make you happy. Idle ideas like "I want a house and a happy family" become flexible and then you will chase that flexibility.

Make sure that when you realise, truly, your goals of "business", only then, you will be happy, accept, and at that point, if you desire, set a new goal. ( I <3 , )

Do not shift YOUR goalpost of what you define that "Take Off" moment is. 9.. 8.. 7..

simmo9000··on Ask HN: What made your business take off that you wish you'd done much earlier?
Establish what "trust" is. The play-by rule-book.

My approach has mostly been to get out of the way of what I don't know and hold on whilst having blind trust.

Like riding a horse, hold on and give direction of the course with balance of freedom to run. Give more freedom and get more trust and enjoy the exhilaration, however hold the reins too tight and you will be fighting all the way.

Walk the tightrope so to speak. Know if you give too much freedom it will buck you off and run for the hills, however, if you can maintain the balance of direction and trust, good things will come.

One go I had was a communications service provider in the naughties that went from zero to 20 mill revenue in one year and it did alright in the end, but with hindsight, I can see so many better ways that almost everything could have been handled.

In my opinion, the main problem that most businesses experience is TRUST. (On every level)

Without it there is no business. Business by definition is about more that one person so trust is imperative.

Is trust equally mutual within your business? Can you quantify that trust? Can other staff in the business? And the customers? The board? The shareholders?

If it is there with all parties than the world will be you oyster!

If not, well that is just business. (But you should mitigate it to take care of your own future)

Wicked growth makes the green eyes shine... Greed comes through the cracks everywhere. Not sure what can be done about this. Company Constitution? Culture?

These are just ramblings of a semi-serial pseudo-successful entrepreneur. I apologise. I don't know any answers but I do know that 'trust' is one of the crucial key elements of a successful business. Trust between every party.

Find the balance of trust between ALL steak-holders and get it ALL in writing. +2cents.

simmo9000··on Who Owns the US National Debt?
Economics or more broadly, finance has its own vocabulary to describe concepts, just like tech, law, medicine or any other discipline. There is always domain knowledge in any field that is required for reasonable understanding.

A country's central bank (The Fed) is not the same as the country (U.S.A.), or more specifically, the government of a country (PoTUS, Congress, ...Treasury).

The central bank is an entity, like a company is an entity, that is lending to the Government, which is often more than one specific entity. The Public.

It can be confusing in the same way that explaining how BGP is used to route TCP packets, across an IP network, with an AES representation of some data that can be used to store value.

That said, money !== resources.

The Fed does issue money which is exactly just 'money creation'. But... It issues bonds to show that other entities will hold the other side, or a 'loan' of the money just created.

This money system was built into what it is now by the Medici: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Medici

Niall Ferguson wrote a great book which gives a detailed history called 'The Ascent of Money'(2008). Niall's other books are worth a read too.

simmo9000··on How the Index Card Catalogued the World (2017)
Categorising between objects is what humans require to navigate the world and communicate observed difference but at what resolution does one re-think drawing lines between categories?

This is the root problem the whole world is grappling with IMHO.

Country borders? Gender lines? (Pick another...)?

At what point does a sibling become a new species. Is fungi more plant or animal. At what point is green on the colour spectrum.

How do we define the point as to when to stop drawing distinct lines and accept a certain "grey scale" while understanding that lines are required somewhere?

simmo9000··on Vapor – Decentralized Web over Bitcoinized HTTP
So would a Content Service Provider (CSP) run a Vapor node and then have opportunity to monetise "immutable" user data talking HTTP?

HTTP, like Amazon S3 buckets seams to be appropriate enough being stateless, ubiquitous and anything can be encapsulated.

User data storage capacity relates to bitcoin via some magic? So Vapor is to be used as a CSP offering that links bitcoin directly to storage enabling pay per use type content? Content that is signed and sealed.

Speed of bitcoin transactions seems like an interesting challenge.

What centrally controlled components (by Vapor) are there, if any?

Business case seams legit.
