simlan··on Teach your kids bridge, not poker
Adding Doppelkopf a 48 cards combined half decks game. Played by 4. Teams 2 on 2 determined throughout the game. The game was influenced by Skat and Schafkopf and borrows from them. It is however very casual usually and the rule variations depend on the region you are in. Anyway to sum up trick an bid games are really fun!

Fyi for the US there is also binocle that has some traction and at least to my experience has been largely forgotten in the originating areas of Germany.

simlan··on 9-Euro-Ticket
The secret sauce is density and a dire need to get this right or congest that city beyond believe. But yes they do a good job.
simlan··on `curl wttr.in`: Weather in your terminal
Love it. Was expecting maybe one limited end-point and was scrolling 5mins through all the features. Very cool
simlan··on Thatcher killed the UK’s superfast broadband before it even existed
I must agree. Above 10Mbps quite honestly even in the current time and age it does not make a difference for my use cases. As long as it is consistent it does not change my life if it where 200Mbps or 1Gbps. We currently have 50 Mbps down which is very consistent and even during Corona has not failed more than once a month for a couple minutes. All that at a rate of sub 30€.

Comparing that to the fiber offerings starting at 80€ and up i do not see the use case right now.

Does it make sense to deploy fiber in new construction and when upgrades are due anyway... Of course! But blaming governments to not magically forseeing which standard of technology would have great utility in a technology coming to life later is ludicrous.

simlan··on Building a blog from scratch in 2022 using Hugo, Docker and a bit of Python
Thanks for the write-up. Nice to read how the pieces fall into place and good inspiration !
simlan··on Glass is the hidden gem in a carbon-neutral future
None of those bottles disappeared. Beer, juices etc are still very commonly sold in reusable glass bottles that re returned. What happened is that the discounters found the new system with deposits on plastics very appealing because it fit into there logistics better than offering glass bottled drinks. Also the remaining the plastic bottles normalized there use similar to glass bottles because they perceived waste production from those bottles was gone.
simlan··on Ask HN: Non-tech professionals on HN?
Chemist here. I have been working with Python for some 10 years in data related applications. Found HN through python/programming topics and like the variety of topics that are coming up here frequently.
simlan··on At the world's oldest social housing, rent hasn't changed since 1521
And your point is ?
simlan··on The Tyranny of Spreadsheets
Well tastes are different. I liked it because of the interspersed backdrop. Granted i am reading this on a chill evening not on the go. Would be different if i had expected a to the point article.
simlan··on Good Riddance, TurboTax. Americans Need a Real ‘Free File’ Program
Well making nice forms and services costs money. If the agency does not have that no nice front end.
simlan··on Show HN: Work with CSV files using SQL. For data scientists and engineers
Which is likely how this works under the hood.
simlan··on Nokia E63 phone converted into LoRa messenger
I had the e61. Also a lovely piece of hardware. Lasted a long time until the feature phones tarted dying.
simlan··on The humble water heater could be the savior of our energy infrastructure woes
Gas to electricity efficiency is low so you loose more then half the energy when producing electricity from gas. Using a 90 percent efficiency furnace to heat water directly with gas is the better solution.

Assuming your electricity comes from gas plants.

simlan··on Sriracha hit revenue of $150M a year with no sales team or ad spend
Tastes the same to me. If at all the goose brand is slightly less spicy by default. Thanks to covid did not have the chance to do a cross check lately...
simlan··on A man whose software ate the world
Yeah hard and fast liberalism. Way to go /s off

Started out legit... Covid vaccine in March 20 ? Not even the autocrats of the world dared that prior to evidence.

simlan··on User Inyerface – A worst-practice UI experiment
That was hilarious i gave up at the slow scrolling cookie consent template. Thanks for the laugh !!!
simlan··on Old-school computing: when your lab PC is ancient
Yes. I always rejoice when i find a scan of an old manual somewhere and the last pages consist of that delightfull command list
simlan··on KolibriOS
Cool stuff. I Love the tiny OS paradigm since i first tried puppy Linux back in 06 (?). It is super fun what you can achieve with a trimmed to the basics desktop OS. I will give it a shot sometime soon.
simlan··on Show HN: Csvbox.io – CSV import button for a web app, SaaS or API
Same in the sciences. Every instrument manufacturer invents their own esoteric format. Simple x,y,y2,y3 is the exception. Sometimes they call it tsv, csv but no commas or tabs were intended.

Multiple datasets in the same csv but instead of adding extra columns put in some breaks in one long column. So you start scanning for empties, skip some metadata and start reading again... Sometimes it is wild.

simlan··on Show HN: I made a simulator for personal finance
Wow impressive. I clicked through some and it does look really polished !
simlan··on Party in a Spreadsheet (2020)

simlan··on Show HN: I'm working on a open-source, self-hosted alternative to Disqus
Same. Firefox on mobile.
simlan··on HP/Agilent E3631A Rotary Knob Repair
Correct! But the "just" life science business is actually bigger than the electronics equipment part.
simlan··on Employee refuses to download app that monitors location, says it got her fired
Do you take the GPS enabled terminal from work home ? Do you have the terminal with you at night and on the weekends?
simlan··on World Beer Index 2021: The Cost and Consumption of Beer Around the World
1.90 USD for a 0.33 liter in Germany. Not sure where that Supermarkt is at. The 0.5 starts at 30 cents. Drinkable starts at 50 cents for the half liter. Anyway i liked there inforgrpahic style.
simlan··on Reconstructing the Menu of a Pub in Ancient Pompeii
Thanks for sharing. I love it. Might add it to the food plan !;)
simlan··on The endless browser wars
True for desktop Firefox. Mobile FF not so much but likely the combination of adblock and mobile FF is not ideal if you want usual commercial sites to work.

Corporate IT is a whole other story. It has been IE only but chrome somehow managed to be compatible with most of the crap they came up with to secure the intranet. Firefox could never complete there... Just too much Microsoft specific 'extras'.

simlan··on People Keeping BlackBerry Alive
I don't have a classic blackberry but the licensed model key Le. I love it :) qwerty for the win. I hope they find another licensee to do qwerty hardware keyboards for Android again.

I actually got hooked on qwerty phones by the Nokia e61. To date the most solid phone I owned. Not very user-friendly by today's standards but it did the job most of the time.

simlan··on Plotnine: Grammar of Graphics for Python (2019)
First time i hear about this. It is definitely pretty but i can not wrap my head around the syntax... It feels wrong. But i am a long time matplotlib user so that should be no surprise.
simlan··on Investors pour $1bn into buying up small merchants on Amazon
Interesting approach. Not sure if they can replace the lean operations of most FBA sellers with an integrated company without compromising the profitability. Also FBA at scale is not necessarily cheaper then running your own logistics.
