simfree··on Pixel 10 Phones
If your not paying, then it really does not matter.

10Gbps equipment is pretty spendy

simfree··on Pixel 10 Phones
The new Intel NUCs are only like a hundred something dollars for an N150 CPU and come with 16 gigs of RAM and a SSD.

Why pay so much more to fight an uphill battle?

Unless you desperately need the hot garbage that is Xcode there isn't much reason to deal with Mac Minis running MacOS as a server. One update and it will suspend and be unwakeable without physical interaction.

simfree··on Fed up with U.S. health care costs, these Americans moved abroad
Wait times for healthcare are insane in the states, getting gall stones broken up with ultrasound (lithotripsy) is something that is booking 9 months out in the Pacific Northwest.

Need a CPAP? The mandatory sleep studys slots for 6 months from now are all full, and calling the programs 3 to 7 hours drive away to see if you can get a slot there is the same deal.

At one point I had to call over 50 different medical practices looking for any doctor that could see my partner in a cast from a broken bone. So many lied about having multiple Orthopedic specialists on staff, and the few I found were booking months out. After a month I got lucky finding an appointment free due to a cancellation, but we had the best healthcare possible at the time and full coverage to see nearly all of the Orthopedic specialists licensed in my state.

US Healthcare is a bad joke and only those with the energy to hustle and fight for their healthcare stand a chance of having a reasonable quality of life if you have anything not immediately treatable in urgent care or an ER.

All of the Primary Care Physicians are booked out 5+ months for one of our HMOs, but at least you won't get 5 different bills mailed to you from LabCorp and others for $1 to $5 each months after a blood test with no way to track or pay them online.

simfree··on T-Mobile claimed selling location data without consent is legal–judges disagree
Main brand is even cheaper when you have a business account. It's only people with few lines that get railed on postpaid wireless.
simfree··on Show HN: SentiCall – AI-powered call assistant
Question, do you have a version for Android? I see it's not in the Play Store yet, and the APK download link does not work (ditto for MacOS and Windows download links).
simfree··on What went wrong for Yahoo
A decrease in search quality has damaged trust with the userbase, making crummy, unreliable data sources like LLMs seem much more viable.
simfree··on TSMC to start building four new plants with 1.4nm technology
The whole system that supports TSMC will break down in the event of a war.

You can see this with SMIC and their inability to get modern lithography systems from the only leading edge vendor ASML. Sure, you can create your own vendors to replace such companies, but they are unlikely to ever catch up to the leading edge or even be only a generation or two behind the leading edge despite massive investments.

With non-leading edge equipment & processes you have to make compromises like making much larger chips so you can get the same compute in a low power profile. This drives up the initial cost of every device you make and you run into throughput issues like what Huawei has experienced where they cannot produce enough ships to ship their flagship ship phones at a reasonable price and simultaneously keep them in stock.

Instead you get boutique products that sell out practically immediately because there were so few units that were able to be manufactured.

simfree··on Giving Up on Element and Matrix.org
Signal's desktop app is slower to load and has less features than Element Desktop, despite both using the same stack of Electron and Sqlite.
simfree··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
I think the concept of a user having an existing Gmail account if they aren't in the Google ecosystem is a bit of hubris.

There are many people I run across who bypassed the whole Gmail and Google Workspace ecosystems and have rolled along merrily with me.com and other email providers.

It's not a given that users will have bothered to register for a Google account unless they grew up in the Bay Area after a certain time period.

Wind back the clock to when Google tried to roll out Hangouts and the Gmail penetration rate was even lower among the non-Android users out there.

simfree··on Why SSL was renamed to TLS in late 90s (2014)
Flaky, unreliable, not web standards compliant, hosted services suck to deal with.

Who needs to add a CORS header to allow Sentry.io or Cloudflare's metrics to work on this 2014 era SaaS that the developer has wandered away from?

simfree··on The Rise of the Japanese Toilet
You certainly can put a GFCI outlet adjacent a toilet, sink or in any other wet space.

Please don't spread electrical code myths.

simfree··on The Rise of the Japanese Toilet
You should already have a circuit breaker at the panel.

A GFCI outlet is needed if your breaker is not GFCI already, but this receptacle is something that isn't terribly expensive.

simfree··on AT&T Email-to-Text Gateway Service Ending June 17
Another one bites the dust.

MMS and email use the same protocol with minor differences under the hood.

Since the FCC abdicated their regulatory power over texting during the first Trump administration under Ajit Pai, T-Mobile, AT&T & Verizon Wireless formed a cartel called The Campaign Registry which has run amok extorting data and cash out of businesses just to be allowed to go through a slow approval process.

Nominally, this was to reduce spam texts, but the vast majority of spam texts are internal to the Mobile Network Operators these days.

simfree··on Botswana launches first satellite BOTSAT-1 aboard SpaceX Falcon 9
Zelle works well enough for doing small (eg: only a few thousand dollars or less) instant transfers for free, and ACH works well enough for large transfers.

Our banking ecosystem is extremely fragmented with thousands of small banks and credit unions, we aren't like Canada where the 5 largest banks control nearly the entire market and can change things relatively quickly.

simfree··on Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access 'weaponised'
Mesh networks like https://guifi.net have been reliably delivering internet longer than you have been a member of HN.

There are many mesh networks with Autonomous Systems Numbers, peering at internet exchanges, etc. You don't order 10Gbps ports at various IXPs if your community run network can't deliver that bandwidth usefully.

simfree··on MapQuest's 'Name Your Own Gulf'
Corporate socialism is what you are describing. It makes little sense outside of the Fortune 500, but they can throw good money after bad projects like replatforming onto internal tech, creating massive technical debt in the procof ss and an inability to spin it back out, thus they must murder the failed project.
simfree··on Microsoft 365 costs are too much
Microsoft force upgraded most clients to Copilot included licenses.

Nothing says Microsoft won't further change their arbitrary pricing and bundling structure.

simfree··on Microsoft 365 costs are too much
Outsource mailservers to competent vendors like MXRoute at near zero cost. Stop focusing on the components that are pennies per user to outsource.
simfree··on Microsoft 365 costs are too much
MXRoute plus Nextcloud is a viable groupware alternative, generally at a much lower cost per user.

One of the bonus features being your email is much less likely to disappear within Outlook.com's mailservers. Not sure what is going sideways there, but those mailservers are not reliable and mail traces are ineffective in finding lost emails that have proof of delivery to the MX record listed outlook.com mailserver.

simfree··on Purelymail: Cheap, no-nonsense email
Purelymail's About page lists one person, and the product is in beta.

MXRoute has years of track record, more than 1 employee, and has good tools like IMAPSync to enable easy duplication of your emails for backup or migration to a different platform.

simfree··on Ozempic and Wegovy are selected for Medicare's price negotiations
We aren't other state insurance systems, though.

Instead, we have a divided and fractured jigsaw and heavy lobbying to keep it that way.

simfree··on Mac Mini G4 – The best « classic » Macintosh for retro-gaming?
Does dialup work on these Mac Minis?
simfree··on Ask HN: Does the Framework laptop stand the test of time?
The parts are nowhere near as inexpensive as a popular ThinkPad model, and the quality issues (rare UEFI updates compared to the competition, poor speakers that rattle, weak hinges, etc) are notable.

I had to buy a friends Framework 13 to get parts to keep mine going, as spending $240 for just the top and bottom case and plastic screen bezel seemed excessive.

More users have put their Framework 13's on a shelf to languish than I expected. The alternatives all seem better polished.

simfree··on Using AZs can eat up your budget – From Prometheus to VictoriaMetrics
FOSS washing software is similarly frustrating.

When I see a license on a project I expect that project will provide the code under that license and function fully at runtime, not play games of "Speak to a sales rep to flip that bit or three to enable that codepath".

simfree··on FTC bans hidden junk fees in hotel, event ticket prices
What crap did Ting pull on you?

Their aggressive data throttling always rubbed me the wrong way, along with the Extreme data pricing, considering it was on Sprint's terrible network.

simfree··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
So it adds no value over the long, randomly generated passwords from a password manager besides making a new standard and giving Microsoft a reason to push a new dark pattern on users to force higher uptake rates of this new, bespoke standard with limited support?
simfree··on Pi modder successfully adds M.2 slot to Pi 500
Intel N100 and N95 MiniPCs are cheap as chips, the last one I bought was $60 and had 8GB of RAM and 256GB of NVMe SSD, plus it included the power adapter and two ethernet ports.
simfree··on RSA's Innovation Sandbox: Cybersecurity Startups Must Accept $5M Investment

simfree··on First Impressions: Lenovo T14s with Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM64 CPU
The finer grained performance per watt vs silicon cost set in the context of use case is just lost in HN hardware conversations like this that ignore total cost of ownership, vendor politics and such.

Everyone is buying the tool that does the job, or building that tool if they want to make that large investment...

simfree··on Show HN: Free mortgage analysis tool to avoid getting screwed by closing costs
If there are only a handful of operators in a given industry and they use the same billing format, why not?

Create a known good OCR to calculation mechanism, then generate reports based off it. If it is inaccurate, its probably a small amount of logic to fix it.

With GPT you could even get it to write the parsing logic for you perhaps, and maybe process bill data when a bill doesn't exactly match existing parser data.
