silver_silver··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
The richest people in the world sure are lucky to have good people like you out here fighting to protect their rights
silver_silver··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
I’ve gotta say ultimately I’m not convinced Herb put more thought into it beyond its purpose justifying human labour in his universe despite the massively advanced technology. There’s a similar shortcut in the Warhammer backstory.
silver_silver··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
The implication in the book is that the exploitation enabled by AI in their history was somehow even worse.
silver_silver··on Debian polls its developers on AI: permit or ban?
There are ethical and environmental concerns arising simply from use and contribution to the industry which many people take seriously
silver_silver··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
AUR is an effectively unmoderated user repo. It’s not Arch Linux’s core repository, nor is it enabled by default or indeed even possible to use without manual downloads from outside the package manager.
silver_silver··on Datacentres drive up big tech's carbon emissions to a third of those of France
Unfortunately the third world will suffer the most from climate change. They do indeed already suffer (I’m from Africa originally myself) but emissions have to be reversed, not simply cut to zero, globally to avoid that getting even worse. There would likely be a midpoint where unchecked industrialisation would increase their quality of life but it would be short-lived. Farms aren’t factories and ultimately even the most developed nations will have to reckon with their dependence on nature.

> False. There's no sustained rising of food prices.

The inflation-adjusted FAO food price index has risen by 64% since 2000. The global average temperature anomaly has risen ~50% in the same period.

> but we don't know exactly what the tipping point is

We do know almost exactly what the tipping points are and that they will make the already dire trajectory worse. The uncertainty is simply how much worse. For example, AMOC collapse would prevent much of Europe from growing enough food to sustain its population. Not an impossible problem but certainly not an easy one, especially in the context of a world already having to deal with moving fertile regions and mass migrations from North Africa and the Middle East due to drought and extreme heat.

silver_silver··on Datacentres drive up big tech's carbon emissions to a third of those of France
It’s anxiety about tipping points more than conspiracy theories. If you look at the figures in the various scenarios without even factoring them in: hundreds of millions to billions face food and water insecurity. You may be insulated enough from the direct effects but what about what they trigger? Already even our wealthy societies are being strained by rising food prices, extreme weather, and dysfunctional migration.

We don’t know exactly what the tipping points would lead to but we do know it would be some degree of a more severe and abrupt decline across the board.

silver_silver··on AI 2040: Plan A
I’m not a booster by any stretch but I had a more positive read. To me it seems to describe a post scarcity society where ultimately the data centres are in e.g. the middle of the ocean and the robots’ labour replaces ours while still leaving us with the rewards.

I am extremely skeptical about whether this is even possible and even less convinced it’s a likely scenario but it seems like a good path.

silver_silver··on My thoughts on the Bun Rust rewrite
All of those commits except the initial integration are from after the acquisition. How do we know this wasn’t done without anyone on the call’s knowledge?
silver_silver··on Grok 4.5
He’s an active, donating supporter of the far right in at least America and the UK. He speaks at political rallies?? Are you joking?
silver_silver··on Suspecting AI cheating, Ivy League prof ordered in-person final; scores fell 50%
My experience as a student has always been that most of the class will cheat given the chance. I remember in high school being one of maybe a dozen in a grade of over 200 who actually read the assigned novels. Everyone else used cliff/spark notes not just to familiarise themselves but also to plagiarise essays.
silver_silver··on Rewriting Bun in Rust
Sure, reasonably well at first glance, but to quote the article:

> I rewrote Bun in Rust using about 50 dynamic workflows in Claude Code run continuously over the course of 11 days.

> Excluding comments, Bun is 535,496 lines of Zig.

> How do you review a PR with +1 million lines added? How do you start to build the confidence needed to responsibly merge large quantities of LLM-authored code? A language-independent test suite with a million assertions, adversarial code review and when something does go wrong, fixing the process that generates the code instead of hand-fixing the code.

That’s vibe coding. This blog post is an ad for Claude, nothing more.

silver_silver··on Rewriting Bun in Rust
People say a lot of things, especially when they have a vested interest in a positive outcome. Bun has been fully vibe coded into another language. There’s no way in hell it’s maintainable. Go read any analysis of the Claude Code leak for proof.
silver_silver··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
It’s illegal which is why when a government does it they either classify it or farm it out to an ally. Have you read any of what Snowden leaked?
silver_silver··on Solar rail could become common in Europe after successful trial in Switzerland
People have been convinced by energy company propaganda that solar still needs a trick or selling point other than protecting the environment. There’s widespread disinformation about cost and environmental impacts from the panels themselves.
silver_silver··on MSI Center – How to gain SYSTEM privileges in seconds
A lot of that is natively well supported on Linux now, especially for slightly older MSI laptops. I’d recommend trying out Fedora Kinoite if you’re used to Windows.
silver_silver··on Underwater suit-wearing cyborg insect capable of diving and terra-aqua travel
Posturing and pedantry like this doesn’t change the fact that the nature of exploitation is more important than its mere existence. I’m not sure what you’re trying to achieve with these comments but if it’s to convince me the original argument was made in good faith you should try doing it yourself.
silver_silver··on Underwater suit-wearing cyborg insect capable of diving and terra-aqua travel
Yes if we follow the logic that exploiting an organism is universally unethical it leads to a ridiculous conclusion.

Maybe it would be more precise to call it a slippery slope but I’m not sure there’s another name for this kind of reductive argument.

silver_silver··on Underwater suit-wearing cyborg insect capable of diving and terra-aqua travel
This argument is called reductio ad absurdum. It’s often used by people like you who want to prevent others from trying to be better.
silver_silver··on Claude Code is steganographically marking requests
> Do you know how their human rights violations compare to, say, western nations?

You have to be joking

silver_silver··on Ask HN: Are people optimistic about the future?
My home country has a population that’s too big for the economy, so most people live in squatter camps and build homes out of scrap wood and sheet metal. The government provides public toilets (often portable because of land ownership issues) for about 100 people to one toilet. They eat subsidised (and fortified) maize for most meals and wash with buckets when it isn’t too cold. Meat is reserved for holidays where it’s typically a gift/bonus from employers. Emergency services can’t enter the camps safely because they’re attacked and robbed, so mob justice is the rule. Neighbours sometimes try to have one another arrested (or killed) so they can steal their shack and possessions. People commute from these camps into the suburbs to clean toilets for <$10 a day. There are waiting lists to work at McDonalds. Meanwhile 20km away is a gated community with private security where the business owners and ministers live in mansions.

None of this is an exaggeration. Everyone is outraged about it, and there are often riots but they’re put down with tear gas and rubber bullets. So every day the sun and GDP continue to rise.

To me this is the only realistic long term outcome of mass unemployment if the tech companies’ visions are realised. UBI is a fantasy. Everyone in the camps is on welfare, it just isn’t enough.

silver_silver··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
What is it about the US you enjoy so? As someone who migrated to Europe from another country (and has never had the privilege of visiting the states) I can certainly think of ways I’d imagine America is better, and vice versa, but comfy is a surprising description. Genuinely curious
silver_silver··on There's no earthly way of knowing which direction we are going
It would be toxic in that environment but I’ve never personally been lucky enough to work at an outfit like that, so I find it difficult to believe the reactive version isn’t more common than the spontaneous you describe
silver_silver··on There's no earthly way of knowing which direction we are going
This reads like an avocado toast critique. Businesses which respect their staff, particularly junior staff, are few and far in between. Why should anyone not “silently quit” when the attitude of their employer is to extract as much value for the lowest cost before a round of layoffs?

You are missing the forest for the trees my friend
silver_silver··on The threat is comfortable drift toward not understanding what you're doing
My boss decreed the other day that we’re all to start maximising our use of agents, and then set an accordingly ambitious deadline for the current project. I explained that being relatively early in my career I’ve been hesitant to use any kind of LLM so I can gain experience myself (to say nothing of other concerns), and yeah in his words I’ve “missed the opportunity”
silver_silver··on Hetzner Prices increase 30-40%
The video models aren’t that good yet but for coding the utility is clear, yes. To be fair Darren Aronofsky also overestimates their quality.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but generating video is also much more resource intensive than equivalently productive text-only model use. It seems the industry could save itself a lot of hassle and infamy by simply avoiding artistic fields.
