silver_silver··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
Not necessarily a lot less but I’m sure removing the aesthetic/cool factor reduces how often they’re carried
silver_silver··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Fair and just societies thrive in refugee camps after all
silver_silver··on How China built its ‘Manhattan Project’ to rival the West in AI chips
My counterpoint is that it’s not possible to buy appliances which last for decades anymore, because the entire industry has changed. Consumers eventually don’t have a choice
silver_silver··on Microsoft drops AI sales targets in half after salespeople miss their quotas
> 500,000,000 people paying $80/mo

Simply not going to happen

silver_silver··on People keep flocking to Linux, not just to escape Windows
To be fair, most forks - especially of Wine - are more like testing branches. The useful stuff tends to find its way upstream eventually
silver_silver··on Don't push AI down our throats
Can second this. Am the only tech worker among my friends and family and every single one of them reacts to AI the same as to crypto or NFTs
silver_silver··on S&box is now an open source game engine
They’re (genuinely) gearing up to release Half-Life 3 at the moment, and not as a VR exclusive
silver_silver··on Wimpy vs. McDonald's: The Battle of the Burgers
There are still a couple of locations around the UK: https://location.wimpy.uk.com/

It's also going strong in South Africa: https://locations.wimpy.co.za/

silver_silver··on Show HN: Aris – a free AI-powered answer engine for kids
“Works on my machine” actually isn’t a good enough response in this case, or to the comment about the video of the man being shot. LLMs are infamously easy to jailbreak and children are very good at getting around guardrails. You should at the very least be doing intense adversarial prompt testing but honestly this idea is just inherently poorly thought out. I guarantee you it’s going to expose children to harmful content
silver_silver··on Is it possible to allow sideloading and keep users safe?
> You can install your own OS on iPhone hardware

No you can’t? Things like Project Sandcastle barely function on a single model. It can’t even access the network

silver_silver··on New research reveals longevity gains slowing, life expectancy of 100 unlikely
The middle path is limiting (not ending) migration while actually trying to help these counties (in particular victims of one’s past colonial ambitions) through aid, investment, and free/subsidised education for their youth.

I say this as a someone who immigrated from a dangerous country to the first world.

The only way the current plan even approaches sustainability is if the brain drain on source nations is sufficient to keep them stuck and suffering. That should make it very clear that the humanitarian impact is a side effect and not the goal.

silver_silver··on AI is different
Realistically, a white collar job market collapse will not directly lead to starvation. The world is not 1930s America ethically. Governments will intervene, not necessarily to the point of fairness, but they will restructure the economy enough to provide a baseline. The question will be how to solve the biblical level of luxury wealth inequality without civil unrest causing us all to starve.
silver_silver··on How to make websites that will require lots of your time and energy
To be fair, once bundling is part of the equation, using typescript becomes effectively free. The frameworks are another story but typescript itself is one of the more reasonable choices.

JSDoc would be unequivocally the superior choice if the browsers themselves hadn’t begun to make just opening the html file problematic by requiring HTTP origins for various parts of the API.

silver_silver··on I will do anything to end homelessness except build more homes (2018)
I was told by a local while living there a major factor was Google and Meta (and others) buying out entire buildings to house their staff
silver_silver··on Baby is healed with first personalized gene-editing treatment
What an insanely callous and shallow take. I don’t even know where to start. You’re trying to claim the moral high ground by complaining that a privileged child didn’t suffer and die? Do you even understand the point of reducing poverty?
silver_silver··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
> the position you're implying, that the Depression was caused by the lack of a NATO-type alliance

Not caused by, but the economy didn’t fully recover until all the wartime production started, and the measures that had been put in place to curb unemployment had been short term solutions with only a limited effect

> I hope Europeans take my comments on HN as a wake-up call that even Democrats like me are getting fed up with them.

You see the problem with you people is that you’ve strong armed your way into everyone’s business for the past century, trying to change cultures and ways of life, far beyond simple alliances - only to now turn around and abandon your so-called allies as soon as they become inconvenient for you. I say this as an African living in Europe who experienced firsthand one of your regime changes and subsequent cutting of ties when the new regime didn’t align

silver_silver··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
> The US was doing absolutely fine prior to WW2, back when we didn't feel Europe was our problem. Our economy was going like gangbusters during that period in fact.

silver_silver··on To 'Reclaim Future-Making', Amazon Workers Published Collection of SciFi Stories
Becky Chambers’ A Psalm for the Wild-Built, its sequel, and to a lesser degree her Wayfarer series are very hopeful. Not exactly hard sci-fi so maybe not to HN’s taste but they check a lot of good tech boxes. A plot device in the former is their world’s version of a smartphone, a scrib, which is designed to last a lifetime and genuinely serve the user
silver_silver··on Cursor told me I should learn coding instead of asking it to generate it
I have (older, but that generation) colleagues who simply stop working if there’s something wrong with the build process because they don’t understand it and can’t be bothered to learn. To be fair to them, the systems in question are massively over complicated and the project definitions themselves are the result of copy-paste engineering.

Unfortunately they also project their ignorance, so there’s massive pushback from more senior employees when anyone who does understand tries to untangle the mess and make it more robust.

The same thing will happen with these ML tools in the future, mark my words: writing code will come to be seen as “too complex and error prone” and barely working, massively inefficient and fragile generated code bases will be revered and protected with “don’t fix what isn’t broken”

silver_silver··on What is vibe coding? How creators are building software with no coding knowledge
If this annoys you as a software developer consider that you’re now experiencing what the artists have been going through
silver_silver··on Operator research preview
Not great that this corporate nothingspeak is coming from what’s intended to be a step towards AGI.
silver_silver··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
> The site's terms of service prohibited the sale of certain items. When the Silk Road marketplace first began, the creator and administrators instituted terms of service that prohibited the sale of anything whose purpose was to "harm or defraud." This included child pornography, stolen credit cards, assassinations, and weapons of any type

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silk_Road_(marketplace)#Produc...

silver_silver··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
I’ve never heard this claim before, where are you getting this?
silver_silver··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
He was serving 2 life sentences + 40 years, not one. Even the prosecutors only asked for 20. What he did was wrong, but the sentence was disproportionate. The judge intended to throw away his life to make a point.
silver_silver··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
His sentence was excessive and cruel to make an example out of him. There’s a serial child rapist in the same prison serving less time.
silver_silver··on Japan's elderly are lonely and struggling. Some women choose to go to jail
You don’t have to have “something going on” for your life to be worth living or have value
silver_silver··on The Origins of Wokeness
> Because almost everything the right says is a lie of one kind or another, but almost everything the left says is either mostly or wholly grounded in fact.

I am not “right wing” by any definition but this is naive and bubbled to the point of ridiculousness. Very little political discourse on social media is grounded in fact regardless of the ideologies involved. Layman discussion based on headlines and vibes has no place in serious politics and the real danger of these platforms is that they’ve elevated that to the standard

silver_silver··on Be Aware of the Makefile Effect
The current state of web development is unfortunately a perfect example of this quality crisis. The tangle of dependencies either directly causes or quickly multiplies the inefficiency and fragility we’ve all come to expect from the web. The solution is unrealistic because it involves design choices which are either not trendy enough or precluded by the platform
silver_silver··on Be Aware of the Makefile Effect
Yes and they’re far less efficient and require far more maintenance than an equivalent electric or even diesel engine, where equivalent power is even possible
silver_silver··on Be Aware of the Makefile Effect
We can’t really call the field engineering if this is the standard. A fundamental understanding of what one’s code actually makes the machine do is necessary to write quality code regardless of how high up the abstraction stack it is
