siliconunit··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Confluence/Jira... slow, chaotic, broken search engine... Basic stuff hidden or not fully functional... I never understood the raison d'etre of confluence expecially, it's a broken wiki basically... I'd rather pay an intern for an in-house solution.
siliconunit··on Tesla Model 3 Drives into Overturned Truck in Apparent Autopilot Failure
Continuous laser telemetry should be always available and active, anything bouncing back at certain speed and distance starts autonomous braking... No need to identify anything..
siliconunit··on All-electric Cessna Grand Caravan makes maiden flight
Now a compact fast-neutron lead cooled reactor would come in handy... development has been done..like the Convair NB 36H, but with 1950 tech..I wonder with modern specs and upgraded safety protocols..
siliconunit··on We've Built Cities We Can't Afford
The whole economy as it stands is a clever puzzle of guessing a half rigged race to the bottom (or the top) game. Now we have the computational and technological resources to track almost anything down to the single item, we should use this power to assure an even and fair distribution of goods and resources and nothing much more. Work to generate income is a destructive and obsolete concept; money as a construct has nearly finished its useful lifespan together with the egotistical concept of accumulation of wealth, a thought that should cease to exist for the greater good of everyone, sweat and pride should be taken for the achievement, not for the reward, but this is something very hard to swallow in certain circles that achieve nothing and produce mostly unfairness.
siliconunit··on Honda bucks industry trend by removing touchscreen controls
Why not do a standard benchmark, perform a number of actions in different conditions and configurations, and see whether humans can react faster and more precisely with 2 touchscreens (let's level the 2 hands advantage) or multiple hardware controllers...
siliconunit··on Pentagon awards contracts to design mobile nuclear reactor
I would rather spend some pennies to make sure the fellas at General Fusion complete the first full scale demo MTF reactor...fission is an extremely appealing tech for many reasons, the problem seems to always boil down to the general population reaction when a massive disposal factory and relative multi-millennia deep cave gets built next door...GF MTF tech looks like a very good compromise between fully fledged self sustaining plasma tokamaks a la ITER, and experimental pulsed solutions that still do not produce valuable output..
siliconunit··on Virtual Nuclear Weapons Design and the Blur of Reality
I find the idea that today we still have to worry about an en masse invasion from a random blob of the same planet and specie population quite an aberration... And more disturbing it all starts usually from single individuals....you want to start a war? Good luck! Good for you! should be the answer of the rest of the population, why it doesn't happen? Lack of education, and the perception of unlawfulness? Armed enforcement? It's beyond me...
siliconunit··on Mathematicians Discover Prime Conspiracy (2016)
Classic example of following definitions or illustrious assumptions too closely... another one is an obvious one, and historically has been challenged a few times: the beginning of the prime sequence 'should be' 1, 3, 5.. very clean, very coherent, but it got stuck in definitions limbo and now we got no 1 and the alien 2, that has to be excepted in most algorithms..eh...
siliconunit··on Not everyone has an internal monologue
I found that in my late 30ies I shifted from an exhausting DFS to a BFS mode....and it has surely helped in tackling social and work complexities better. I have also discovered that I was unconsciously not giving my full attention to details ,especially over math/programming problems, I was always in a state of slight 'haze', but the whole thing was extremely well played by the brain...I really thought I was fully concentrated and paying complete attention, but only now I know that I can step to a deeper level, where I play back and forth multiple variables and remember better the connectivity of the problem. A decent analogy would be if you play piano and are going through a challenging part, your hands and mind are fully focused on the movements but doing so makes everything hard and stiff, and eventually you run out of steam very fast, with experience though you learn to microfocus on some parts and keep it loose on others...etc. seems fitting..
siliconunit··on Imperial College London charge £28,000 for their online MSc degree on Coursera
rip off Britain... nothing new
siliconunit··on LavaPS: Top, Implemented as a Lava Lamp (1995)
I relish when something gets a thoughtful graphical representation.. would be nice to have it in a more advanced 3d shape...maybe something like that could be done in unreal engine/blender, driving isosurfaces blobs. Too bad software inventions are so emepherals.. won't have it working in 30 years , or less though.
siliconunit··on Estonia has a new way to stop speeding motorists
I find it quite disturbing that in the US you have this insurance/tickets connection, it has been said clearly by many city halls and police forces that most ticketing and regulations are rigged to be just another city income stream, nothing much to do with safety or concern (just cap car speed from manufacturers you really care about safety). Glad here in Europe it's completely separated afaik.
siliconunit··on The Internet Archive is waging war on misinformation
I find this kind of news deeply worrying...critical thinking should be applied to everything, and purging an archive of some of its controversial stuff (albeit a common practice in real ones too as pointed out) is a terrifying perspective, what's the next subject, where do you stop, is the internet to become a 'validated safe space'? A chilling perspective. If you cannot handle discussion about absolutely anything without being afraid or influenced something is deeply wrong in the way you have been educated.
siliconunit··on The Amazon Is Not the Earth’s Lungs
Thinking that exposing the objective truth to the general public is always the best course of action is at best naive and can at times lead to tragedy... You can do this to a greater extent if your nation is small and has a high amount of highly educated citizens (ie Scandinavian countries) that are able to understand implications and distinctions and place limits to their personal volition for the sake of the community. Tell to Joe down the road that the recycling truck at times dumps everything together for technical reasons and you will dramatically diminish the care and effort to properly separate waste.
siliconunit··on Without heart disease, daily aspirin may be too risky
Taking 50mg before going to bed, for periods, (3-6months a year, during massive crunch time project deliveries), it helps me sleep better and be less tired, also it makes my dreams extremely vivid and more complex, is there any study on this? It is a constant aspect that I can reproduce steadily...
siliconunit··on How I Run a Company with ADHD
Anyone in the Montreal area could suggest a name for a good doctor to potentially diagnose and treat ADHD? This has been going on all my life and I am extremely fed up with it, I cannot list one single thing I ever finished 'properly' in my life (35+) and this include important academic and work tasks.. I don't want to 'have' anything , or justify my possible laziness/ineptitude, but I want to have professional making the call. Thanks...
siliconunit··on Air Pollution Seems to Cause Dementia
As far as anecdotes go, since I moved to London I noticed a sharp decrease in memory performance, heavy hair loss, and a general feeling of unhealthiness, developed a random persistent cough as well. The fact that you can always see a heavy haze even in short tube tunnels tells a lot on the air quality, the last underground cleaning train stopped working in the eighties...very unhealthy place to live/work in my opinion.
siliconunit··on Some people are uncomfortable with touchers. Should they set the rules?
Absolutely agree with this. I find it quite sad when I see young non religious people at work behaving like monks and nuns in fear of human latent intentions and interpretations of their behaviour. Sometimes reading too much theory and having too many specific words that define phenomenons which you have not yet experienced and elaborated can lead to a very frustrating life to say the least..
siliconunit··on Buy Yourself a Latte
I think part of the problem is how real estate costs and huge franchise a la Starbucks are configured. When you travel in Mediterranean countries independent coffee shops 'bars' are the norm, and a good Italian espresso costs 0.80 euros. Part of it comes from the fact that bars sell a big assortment of alcoholics(and yes Europeans don't seem to have mental association between selling alcohol and getting wasted, so most bars are family friendly), sodas and indigenous sandwiches. That makes selling coffe not a central part of the business hence the reasonable cost, which won't dent your retirement plan nor make you feel miserable. What happened in the Anglosphere (and not only) is fundamentally a habit appropriation without the surrounding conditions to support it and this drives the prices to stupid levels.
siliconunit··on Amsterdam's Plan: If You Buy a Newly Built House, You Can't Rent It Out
While not perfect it's absolutely commendable, compare this to the borderline criminal state of real estate market in places like the UK or Vancouver where foreign investors and corrupted politics destroyed and alienated the middle class population...Imho real estate should be absolutely outside the possibility of speculation and 'investment', a house is for a family/person to own and live in not some mega conglomerate side business of rip off rental and overinflated selling prices.
siliconunit··on As Costs Skyrocket, More U.S. Cities Stop Recycling
The alternative to total recycling could be to rough recycling what can be easily extracted and used (ie metals) and the rest could go through a cycle of thermolysis/pyrolysis, powered by solar or other sustainable sources...
siliconunit··on Oslo made its city center basically car-free
I would be very careful about outsourcing our basic civil right to move around freely. Very careful, extremely careful. I live in Europe and I fully appreciate cheap public transport and decongested city centers, but I appreciate more a going fully electric revolution, and still keep my EV and drive wherever I please at any time.. I would not trust any government with the power to own my means of transportation fully, ever. We are living in an era of infantilisation of the society, where we close our eyes to any risk or danger and give up our basic freedoms for a fear of responsibility, this could have catastrophic consequences if the 'wrong' type of ruling class gets into power.
siliconunit··on Puzzle-solving 'doesn't slow down mental decline in older people'
Lots of highbrow denial:D /sarcasm
siliconunit··on Popular dark-web hosting provider hacked, 6,500 sites down
Just xor bit by bit against real random noise, embed it in a massive stream of other pure random, remember the offset, if it's really that important..
siliconunit··on Developers are manufacturing prefabricated apartment buildings
Absolutely, land estate prices are totally insane in the more gentrified areas. The building itself is nearly irrelevant, see Vancouver rare land plots for measure... or most of the UK. What is in dire need is a fundamental legislation change, where the entirety of the real estate is no longer a market open to speculation, but a fundamental right of the individual and is well proportioned to any income range within a very reasonable 2:1 ratio and this even if it means depricing the already bought properties and cutting corporations out of the building business and of course limiting the amount of houses in possession to a single individual to maybe 2 and eliminate speculators/investors completely.
siliconunit··on Tesla that crashed in Autopilot mode sped up before hitting truck: police
I think a lot of factors could be ironed out by a solid mathematical grasp of the problem, instead of letting customers become guinea pigs or running simulations and then deduce a blanket solution that looks okay in those average cases, a room with a bunch of mathematicians will surely state the problem, limits and solution in a infinitely:) more solid way. I have seen this happening with software countless times, spend the money on a math ph.d and save endless testing time with half guessed solutions where limit cases are ignored...etc.
siliconunit··on Gravitation water vortex power plant
wow, definitely a rabbit hole! the whole Schauberger family it seems.. interesting stuff, thanks!
siliconunit··on The Eccentric Lives of Steinhaus, Banach and Ulam (2014)
I wonder sometimes if our modern structured and red taped upper education model could ever cope with such exceptional individuals at all. I cannot stop thinking they will never get the unbridled space they need to express their ideas and concot together without an heavy amount of supervision and channeling toward 'agreed' topics and behaviours, I think education and the application of the law should be very flexible when exceptional individuals are at stake...
siliconunit··on Stephen Hawking has died
Like many here he was an inspiration for me too, I read his books at an early age and along with others it got me inspired to pursue scientific studies. It also helped me come to terms with the fear of death and eventually see the odds of sentient life and appreciate the ride without the egotistic entitled feeling that sparks that fear in the first place.Rip Stephen.
siliconunit··on California Wildfires Burned Irreplaceable Documents on Silicon Valley History
I was going to say that too, Terence book collection loss is a bleeding wound still now..
