siidooloo··on Why Don't Americans Understand How Poor Their Lives Are?
The only reason Uber/Lyft exist is because transport in the US is mostly terrible.
siidooloo··on The Quest to Acquire the Oldest, Most Expensive Book on the Planet
His first printed book was probably a latin grammar manual. The bible was his first important book.
siidooloo··on Volkswagen’s Costly Bet on Electric Cars
Most people don’t live in the US. The cars that are popular in the US are already less popular outside. That trend can continue while everyone else moves to smaller electric cars.

Americans still don’t use metric. That hasn’t stopped everyone else in the world.

siidooloo··on Nasa Happily Reports the Earth Is Greener
The north, where a lot of the new greening will occur, also has shorter days as winter comes. How much longer could the growing seasons in the north get?
siidooloo··on Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Campus
New York City has no current shortage of jobs or growth. Incentives aren’t needed. If they wanted to offer incentives for companies to move to Buffalo, it might be worth it. But NYC will be fine without it.
siidooloo··on An ex-YouTube whistleblower on their recommendation engine
The OP didn’t say they we deliberately political. He said they were by default.
siidooloo··on China sentences Canadian man to death in drug case linked to Huawei row
Why should you have to avoid political talk? Why shouldn’t you be allowed to talk about whatever you want?

Also, your grammar errors arn’t those typically made by a Francophone. This is a tell.

siidooloo··on $1T is leaving Britain because of Brexit
Britain isn’t going to turn into some Mad Max wasteland like some claim, but it will be worse off. The big thing is that on average the larger more open market will have more growth than the smaller more closed one. That growth will be compounded over the years. In several decades people in Britain will be asking why people in Poland have a better standard of living than them.
siidooloo··on With Facebook at ‘War,’ Zuckerberg Adopts More Aggressive Style
Facebook is ‘the media.’ Newspapers, magazines and TV are just advertisements with enough other stuff in the middle to get you attention. Facebook is the same thing.
siidooloo··on Stamos says the US must ‘come together to protect’ democracy from misinformation
What you’re saying is still true in a constitutional monarchy. Being a republic or democracy doesn’t matter. Its the constitutional part that’s important.
siidooloo··on Stamos says the US must ‘come together to protect’ democracy from misinformation
The United Stares is a constitutional republic and a representative democracy. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and a representative democracy. Democracy is not the opposite of a republic. Monarchy is.
siidooloo··on Canada's last witch trials: Women accused of fake witchcraft
If they claim their homeopathic remedy has any medicinal benefit there is no proof for, then yes they should be prosecuted.

Thats not free speech. That’s fraud.

siidooloo··on Tesla’s Model 3 Is Becoming One of America’s Best-Selling Sedans
Here’s a thought experiment:

Product A has 100 parts. Each part has a 10 percent chance of breaking over the products lifetime.

Product B has 25 parts. Each has a 10 percent chance of breaking over the product’s lifetime.

Which product is more likely to break more often?

siidooloo··on Telltale Autopsy
This may be generally true, but I don’t think it is specifically in the case of Telltale. They made interactive fiction. Should that really require superstar programmers? Where they probably should’ Been spending their money is on artists that produce things their audience looks at and goes, “Ohh cool, I want that.”
siidooloo··on Blackmagic eGPU – Thunderbolt 3 external graphics processor
Since this is from Blackmagic what might be more interesting is a more expensive version of this with decklink built in. Then you could plug your output monitor straight into it. For a lot of people working in film/video that little extra would turn this into a Mac Pro without a cpu in it.
siidooloo··on Blackmagic eGPU – Thunderbolt 3 external graphics processor
Running a desktop would be cheaper, but a lot of people have to do stuff remote from a laptop. This thing seems a bit big to be really portable, but some version of an egpu would be great at preventing Resole from melting your laptop.
siidooloo··on AT&T’s Troubling Plan to Change HBO
Do you watch 24 different HBO shows a year, or do you watch 4 or 5?
siidooloo··on AT&T’s Troubling Plan to Change HBO
HBO and Netflix both produce a couple of dozen shows a year. HBO seems like it has a better hit ratio because you have to go back every week to get an update on the one or two current shows you enjoy. HBO has a better presentation for appearing prestige.
siidooloo··on AT&T’s Troubling Plan to Change HBO
People arn’t going to continue subscribing to HBO because they had a bunch of shows they liked 10 years ago. They subscribe because of new things they want to watch.

At any one time HBO has about 3 to 5 shows a year that I like. Netflix seems to have about the same ratio. Netflix’s firehose seems to ensure they have at least a few shows most people like. Without the cable TV lock-in HBO is going to have to do something to convince people to keep payng more for less.

siidooloo··on AT&T’s Troubling Plan to Change HBO
I feel like HBO manages to make people feel like there are fewer lulls in its schedule by stretching their shows airtimes out over 3 or 4 months. On other services people watch a show over a week and then look for something else.
siidooloo··on Japanese Writing After Murakami
Most of the postmodern fiction I’ve read (Pynchon, Foster-Wallace, etc) seems to have the opposite problem: too much stuff happening.
siidooloo··on Cyberpunk 2077 world premiere: 50 minutes of William Gibson-level insanity
It doesn’t have enoigh rain to really feel cyberpunk.

... on a side note, I just realized we’re now as far away from cyberpunk in time as cyberpunk was from the golden age of sci-fi. That also feels wrong somehow.

siidooloo··on Tesla is laying off ‘about 9%’ of its workforce as it ‘restructures’ the company
If you’re building a web app you can fail upwards until you find success. If you’re building a car and you fail people die.

Its like the difference between any random saas and Theranos.

siidooloo··on Has Consciousness Lost Its Mind?
This seems like a god of the gaps kind of argument. As we learn more about biology and neuroscience people who believe consciousness and the mind exist outside of the brain will be forced to make increasingly specific claims. They will eventually have to explain the physical process that allows the mind to not be some reflection of the brain. Over time I expect the scope of “and something magic-like happens here” to be reduced.
siidooloo··on China has turned Xinjiang into a police state like no other
Within a few decades of the French revolution half of the European governments were overthrown and replaced with constitutional Monarchies. The other half that resisted were forced into increasing totalitarianism and in a few more decades themselves overthrown in year zero revolutions.

The one country to avoid this, Britain, learned the lesson of the French Revolution. They maed enough reforms that there was no constituency for revolution.

siidooloo··on China has turned Xinjiang into a police state like no other
If they had learned from that mistake they wouldn’t be trying to wall the internet off.
siidooloo··on China has turned Xinjiang into a police state like no other
Nothing is forever. The current regime in China won't be forever either. The question is how long.

After Augustus Rome still had a couple of hundred years of expansion where a nationalist could argue, “hey look at that! Things are still going good.” But they couldn’t outrun the rot in the system forever.

After Xi will China get another strongman? I think this is the key. If there are a series of total dictators things will decay. Whatever justifications a dictator uses for their rules, ultimately they are going to try to implement policies that keep themselves on top first.

siidooloo··on China has turned Xinjiang into a police state like no other
That didn’t work for the USSR, why would it work for China? As long as some things are off limits / as long as people know they arn’t alowed to research this or that, then they’ll be at a long term disadvantage to those that do.

China was here before. Cutting yourself off from the world just means you eventually find yourself having fallen behind everyone else.

siidooloo··on China’s SenseTime, the world’s highest-valued AI startup, closes $620M round
Companies that get too intermingled with the Chinese government are likely to fall victim to some corporate version of Lysenkoism. No company is good at everything. All companies fail eventually. But, if you can’t you’ll eventually grind away miss-applying whatever you can do to whatever you’ve been order to do.
siidooloo··on Thanksgiving Got Shorter After the 2016 Election, Study Says
Its a nice dream. It’ll never happn. All it takes is one family member acting out, and lacking complete self awareness about it, to cause everyone else to regret being arund family.

I’ve know pople to change their likes and beliefs. I’ve never known anyone to change their psychology. A narcissist is always a narcissist. Unfortunately.
