sigvef··on The GitHub wiki is an anti-pattern (2022)
Not many people know that the github wiki is actually backed by a separate "hidden" repo, and can be accessed by adding .wiki to the repo url, e.g. https://github.com/lionleaf/dwitter.wiki.git

Apparently it can even do CI stuff. Still wouldn't recommend it though, for the other reasons outlined in TFA and this thread.

I work on https://elevenmusic.io (full disclosure), so I just had to check:

sigvef··on Show HN: ElevenMusic Sounds, loop library that grows as other people generate
Hi HN! Hope you have fun with this one :) Everything is free to browse and download and if the sound you need doesn't exist, describe it and generate it. Every generation joins the public library, so the catalog grows from what people couldn't find.

Dwitter is 10 years old this winter! If anyone is interested in some backstory, I dug up an old interview: https://medium.com/windows-developer/dwitter-dares-you-to-co....

Of course, the real magic of dwitter is the lovely community: https://discord.gg/emHe6cP

sigvef··on Show HN: Arc Roam – Streamlined, physics-based puzzle/racing game
Arc Roam is my holiday project this Christmas. I wanted to create an online, browser-based, mobile-playable "destilled" alternative to the old classic PC game Elastomania, (and it's unofficial multiplayer mod Elma Online). I used to play Elma religiously, but it stopped working on Mac (via Wine) last year, so hopefully I now have a way of getting my fix again! Now all I need is someone to complete against

The tech stack is pretty simple: - React / canvas (2d) frontend - express / ws backend - Fully ephemeral, no storage (to save money)

Cool! Not to self-promote (no monetization or anything), but in case any one finds it helpful, I made something similar for myself to practice becoming more accurate with Wacom-style tablet pens: https://tabletpractice.arkt.is/

That's for the stats feature that shows you e.g. your most guessed word, etc. It's all calculatated client-side. In fact, there is no backend at all!
sigvef··on Show HN: Five Letters – word puzzle game
It uses the scrabble dictionary (SOWPODS, as you mention) -- if it is a playable five-letter word in scrabble, then it is playable here.

Technology-wise, I wanted to try out two things that I hadn't tried before for this project.

One was to use Expo to release on web and mobile at the same time. I've used React Native quite a bit in a professional capacity, so I wanted to check out the Expo landscape. I discovered that the web part (react native web) didn't quite deliver on what I was looking for, so I scrapped it and ported to Vite/react-ts and dropped native completely.

The other was to see if I could find a low-friction way of setting up subscriptions for a static web frontend with no first party backend. That is the reason why there is a premium subscription tier for a small weekend game like this. Turns out that this was pretty straight forward with Gumroad! In the end, I was pretty happy with the way the flow turned out (except that Apple Pay isn't supported without stepping out of the flow and heading to Gumroad directly).

sigvef··on Show HN: Five Letters – word puzzle game
I came across https://bert.org/2021/11/24/the-best-starting-word-in-wordle... on HN the other day, and decided to do my own take on the concept as a little weekend project.

I guess an answer would be to call it "old", given its placement next to "new" (and the fact that it lets you browse old stories).

sigvef··on Show HN: Music Video Dispenser now renders videos using headless Firefox
We use the Web Audio API, HTML5 Canvas (with PIXI.js) and MediaRecorder to render and play-back generative music videos on the client side. However, it turns out that MediaRecorder can only work in real time, so unless you have a reasonably beefy computer, your video render might suffer from frame drops and random hangups. In an effort to eliminate these frame drops we moved the same js rendering code that we use on the frontend into a headlessly run Firefox instance wrapped in some additional node.js logic for controlling logic flow. That required splitting the rendering process into an offline pre-processing step for FFT analysis on the audio stream, a separate rendering job for rendering the frames themselves, then using ffmpeg to combine video frames, audio data and remuxing timestamps to ensure proper playback speeds.
sigvef··on Show HN: Music Video Dispenser now renders videos using headless Firefox
We launched Music Video Dispenser on HN roughly two months ago (previous discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13308820 ). At the time we rendered videos on the client using the brand new MediaRecorder web api. Now we've moved rendering to the cloud using MediaRecorder in a headless Firefox instance instead so we can guarantee perfect 60fps full hd videos without frame drops!
