I'm really glad that they didn't go the Twitter route and develop something completely new.
signed0··on Brilliant or insane code?
One more for kicks:

    n = iter(array).next
    [(n(), n(), n()) for _ in xrange(len(array) / 3)]
signed0··on Brilliant or insane code?
Haha. I feel very silly now. I was just about to respond with the same thing.

    while True:
        result = list(islice(iterator, 3))
        if not result:
            break
        yield result
signed0··on Brilliant or insane code?
I was a bit wrong about that. For some reason I imagined that there would be quite a few args being passed to zip, when in fact there are just the three iterators. It does create a temporary list, but it's so small it's negligible. Using izip wouldn't really change anything.
signed0··on Brilliant or insane code?
I'd be surprised if my way is slower. Any time you unpack into a function such as zip() python has to create an intermediary list to store all the results before calling the function.
signed0··on Brilliant or insane code?
It's not brilliant.

This accomplishes the same thing without being hard to understand:

    from itertools import islice

    iterator = iter(array)
    try:
        while True:
           yield list(islice(iterator, 3))
    except StopIteration:
        pass
signed0··on Uber drivers file class-action suit over tips
The difference is that bribery usually involves an upfront payment. Maybe people should start tipping before their meal.
signed0··on Uber drivers file class-action suit over tips
That article is somewhat confusing. The issue isn't that Uber doesn't allow tips, it's that when a person does decide to tip , Uber takes 50% of it.

Here is a much better writeup: http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/28/4668504/uber-lawsuit-san-f...

I've used the app several times and I've never been prompted to enter a tip. Maybe it's a new feature?

Edit: After reading a few more sources I think the issue is that every fare has a built in 20% tip, but Uber takes half of it. Another source: http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-drivers-open-lawsuit-ove...

There was something similar earlier this year with typing 'File:///' in a OSX text field.

Seems to crash the tab in Chrome 29 on OSX.

Given that it's not possible to set the default map app on IOS, I wonder how many of the people that "use Apple Maps weekly" did so by accident.

If this violates law, then surely ignoring robots.txt also violates the law. In this case website owners should be able to sue Cyveillance (Comcast outsourced copyright enforcement to them). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyveillance

I'm curious why you feel that the extension of Muni is a waste of funds. As the project is to extend it from Caltrain station through Powell and then on to China Town, do you think the entire thing a waste, or just the latter portion?
signed0··on Encryption is less secure than we thought
TLDR: Bloch doubts that the failure of the uniformity assumption means that cryptographic systems in wide use today are fundamentally insecure. “My guess is that it will show that some of them are slightly less secure than we had hoped, but usually in the process, we’ll also figure out a way of patching them.”

Qualify what you mean by poorer service. Just because the service is different doesn't mean that it's worse. I'd take a waitress that was curt and left after I'd placed my order over one that asks me if I need anything every 10 minutes.

Good point. I mistakenly thought that they were going to rewrite the email addresses in git commits, it appears that is not the case.
signed0··on Keep Your GitHub Email Address Private
I don't hate them. I have no problem when they contact me through legitimate channels such as LinkedIn or StackOverflow. I even try to respond with a polite 'no' in most cases.

I have a problem with them abusing the git commit logs to get at my personal email as a way of manipulating me.

This is the best Hacker News Android app I've seen!

Would it be possible to have the refresh icon spin instead of that weird animation, or is that a result of it being a web app?

signed0··on Persona makes signing in easy for Gmail users
AFAIK Right now there are two things that Mozilla controls.

1) login.persona.org that takes care of authentication

2) a JavaScript shim that developers add to their sites to get the login button to work.

Persona is designed in such a way that reliance on Mozilla will be phased out as email providers take care of #1 and as browsers start to implement #2. As of now I think FireFox is the only browser that has #2 baked in.
