siddheshgunjal··on Google confirms 'high-friction' sideloading flow is coming to Android
Nope, they have exact same data collecyion policy. Just represented in a different way on app store. That's the illusion they create
siddheshgunjal··on Google confirms 'high-friction' sideloading flow is coming to Android
So many amazing open-source developers just don't want to publish their app to app store because of the fees. On android, this is way way easier. If google keeps making this difficult, then i'll just have to switch to linux phone
siddheshgunjal··on SpaCy: Industrial-Strength Natural Language Processing (NLP) in Python
I was thinking of trying ModernBERT for one of my projects. But I can only conclude after seeing the performance for my usecase. Do you think ModernBERT will be capable of expanding abbreviated sentences?
siddheshgunjal··on SpaCy: Industrial-Strength Natural Language Processing (NLP) in Python
At my work, we still prefer to use distilbert for text classification. It almost always does well with a little bit of fine tuning. In very rare cases, we use LLMs/Agentic setup when the task involves refering both images and text and the same time.

Did people really forget about the awesome WebXR API that lets you do spatial computing for AR/XR directly from browser?

I have a simple webapp here that utilizes WebXR API. I have also added some controls using gestures. Please try it out and do let me know...

siddheshgunjal··on MeTube: Self-hosted YouTube downloader
I also realised the same thing yesterday. I tried using a specific tag quality, for a playlist and many of the videos failed to download. So, I just set it to download the best available quality for video and audio.
siddheshgunjal··on MeTube: Self-hosted YouTube downloader
This is a very neat implementation! Exactly what I was thinking. I'm gonna try it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
siddheshgunjal··on MeTube: Self-hosted YouTube downloader
This looks like a good implementation. But I have to go to my desktop to explore more
siddheshgunjal··on MeTube: Self-hosted YouTube downloader
I don't understand one thing...why do you need to host it on a server? It can be just a standalone app on windows/Linux/mac. I recently just started using yt-dlp and have thought of making a simple app. Should I though? Are there any alternatives in existence of this kind?
siddheshgunjal··on My Windows Computer Just Doesn't Feel Like Mine Anymore
Have you tried DaVinci Resolve? It works great.
siddheshgunjal··on My Windows Computer Just Doesn't Feel Like Mine Anymore
I switched to Linux when I got frustrated because of windows just updating and restarting itself over night when I left my unfinished project for the next day to continue. That was a trigger for me
siddheshgunjal··on Ask HN: What underrated open source project deserves more recognition?
slackker for monitoring your ML model training status in real-time on Slack & Telegram.

https://github.com/siddheshgunjal/slackker

I have also been planning to add discord support soon.

siddheshgunjal··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
Why not go for GitHub hosting then?
siddheshgunjal··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
That's why for my static site, I always prefer to use GitHub. Simple, deploy changes in push and can connect to a custom domain if needed.
siddheshgunjal··on Ask HN: Am I insane if I use only Sublime+Terminal combo for development?
A long time ago, I tried PyCharm/phpStorm for my projects. I tried really hard, but kept switching back to the terminal myself
siddheshgunjal··on Ask HN: Am I insane if I use only Sublime+Terminal combo for development?
Yup, for most of my work, which is mostly python, js, php Sublime works well with autocomplete. For flutter I use LSP for some refactoring suggestions and other tasks like wrapping a widget, etc.
siddheshgunjal··on Ask HN: Am I insane if I use only Sublime+Terminal combo for development?
I was a PyCharm user myself, but later I found out that for most of my projects, Sublime works well with auto complete (Except Java). For flutter code refactor (like wrap widget, etc.) and suggestions, LSP works very well.
siddheshgunjal··on Show HN: I made a website to find best bus seat to avoid the sun while traveling
This is so interesting and the fact that it works anywhere in the world is awesome buddy! And kudos for finishing your side project
siddheshgunjal··on WebP is so great except it's not (2021)
Author might be right about the gradient shifts in images after conversion, but at the same time, most of the websites are not using such color accurate images everywhere. Some are logos and some are with alpha channel. It is a fact that WebPs are lightweight assets to load on the user side which reduces bandwidth consumption for the user and your server. So use WebP where it's needed to save some loading time and bandwidth and use your preferred format where you want to show images as is.

If you're planning to convert your images to WebP in bulk, I wrote a shell script: here's the link:

siddheshgunjal··on PysimpleGUI
I kinda prefer CustomTKinter, which has a much elegant and material theme-like look. Supports light/dark theme as per system on windows/Linux/MacOS.
siddheshgunjal··on It's Still Funny That 1k People Gave Tesla $250k for a Roadster Six Years Ago
But we cannot deny the fact that, musk introduced the roadster out of desperation to get some up-front payment and save Tesla.

It is possible that roadster specs were made up and now the RnD department is suffering to achieve the same, delaying the deliveries of the final product.

So he basically did sell the promise but now Tesla has to deliver it as 6 years is a very long gap.

siddheshgunjal··on Ask HN: How to learn about path configuration in Python
Whenever setting up a path configuration in my python applications, I always use following at the beginning:

  import os
  os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__))
This will make sure that absolute path is taken for your file irrespective of the OS and solve the issue of file system when building multi-platform applications.
siddheshgunjal··on YouTube's Anti-Adblock and uBlock Origin
Reddit shouldn't be considered as a tech support site. As most of the drama happens there. GitHub issues might have less drama as compared to that. Just avoid reddit at all costs for your peace of mind.
siddheshgunjal··on YouTube Begins Blocking Users Who Use Adblock
Every innovation they have tried themselves has failed and they just discontinued it. Other good things they have done are actually by buying other startups and then using their tech .
siddheshgunjal··on Energy, WiFi and RAM use by Android messaging apps
It's a good thing that I have disabled Gmail app on my device and use k9 for all my email accounts. Seems like I should stop using WhatsApp too.
siddheshgunjal··on Progress on No-GIL CPython
We experienced programmers who know how to separate things into modules and use it wisely at the correct place. But most of the beginners and intermediate developers always tend to do it in a "Everything in single script" manner which might also make it difficult to have more control over the application's behaviour.
siddheshgunjal··on Localsend: Open-Source Airdrop Alternative
I have been using localsend on all my devices. Of course when I'm out and need to share files with a friend's phone (mostly Android) I prefer to go for Nearby Share. But when you're at home, you have all kinds of devices. In those scenarios, I found localsend to be a perfect choice. Native app, no browser (visit this url/ scan this QR code) shenanigans. Simple transfer over the local network. Simple client for Linux, Android, Windows, iOS, MacOS and most importantly good transfer speed.
siddheshgunjal··on Ask HN: What phone model do you currently own?
My experience with /e/ OS has been good so far and yes you're right, I'm using MircoG and yes, all my banking and payment apps are working fine, Just Uber does not work. Google Maps work fine too with MircoG on /e/ OS.

The main advantage /e/ OS has over other custom ROMs is it's 'Advanced Privacy', which blocks all the trackers from all installed apps at device level (by blocking DNS request). It is very unique to /e/ OS and it works like a charm. You can find more details about it here: https://doc.e.foundation/support-topics/advanced_privacy

And No, /e/ OS does not focus only on pixel device, it's much more flexible than Calyx or Graphene.

For my device, Easy installer support was there, so installing /e/ OS was easy. I have also installed it on my friends POCO F1 using TWRP recovery. You don't have to build it yourself, /e/ foundation hosts pre-built images for all supported devices.

How did I do it without Easy Installer?: 1. Go to this link: https://doc.e.foundation/devices and check if device supported or not 2. If yes, copy its codename (For POCO F1 it's "beryllium". 3. First check if there is stable release for your phone with this link: https://images.ecloud.global/stable/<codename>/ 4. If not, then download dev build for your phone my modifying above link to: https://images.ecloud.global/dev/<codename>/ 5. You can find ".img" file of recovery and ".zip" file for build. 6. Refer this video to install /e/ OS using TWRP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZyqFzsXYek

siddheshgunjal··on Ask HN: What phone model do you currently own?
OnePlus 7T with /e/ OS. It's comes with SD 855+ which is pretty tough processor. Have been using it for almost 4 years now and not a single hiccup.

Battery life is also good till now. I get around 4-5 hours if Screen-on-time with heavy usage which is satisfactory for me. 855+ is quite optimised processor.

I had OnePlus 2 earlier, which also a good device. But it got damaged due to falling in waterfall.

I'm planning to run a mobile linux on my OnePlus 7T like Ubuntu touch or Postmarket OS (with GNOME shell) but they still do not support my phone model.

Does anyone know if there is any mobile linux that supports OnePlus 7T?

siddheshgunjal··on An overview of Slack's new design
Some of my colleagues today were like, Is it happening to slack at your machine too?? Nah bro, I use linux . BTW is this theme update happening for linux users too? Cause all of my workspaces were normal (with old themes).
