sidchilling··on I'm Eric Ries, author of "The Lean Startup" and new book "Incorruptible" – AMA
In your view, which are couple different companies that aren’t very big (not FAANG level yet), but you think will become quite successful? Which of them are mission driven and you’d be sad if they later become “corrupted”?
sidchilling··on I'm Eric Ries, author of "The Lean Startup" and new book "Incorruptible" – AMA
Isn’t “what” the easy part? I thought the leadership is more about why they are doing what they are doing and why is that important/not important. Something which LLMs are not great at today, but aren’t terrible and can make some good guesses at times.
sidchilling··on America Has Lost the Arab World
Did it belong to America to lose?
sidchilling··on Can I run AI locally?
I have been trying to run Qwen Coder models (8B at 4bit) on my M3 Pro 18GB behind Ollama and connecting codex CLI to it. The tool usage seems practically zero, like it returns the tool call in text JSON and codex CLI doesn’t run the tool (just displays the tool call in text). Has anyone succeeded in doing something like this? What am I missing?
sidchilling··on Qwen3-Max-Thinking
What would a good coding model to run on an M3 Pro (18GB) to get Codex like workflow and quality? Essentially, I am running out quick when using Codex-High on VSCode on the $20 ChatGPT plan and looking for cheaper / free alternatives (even if a little slower, but same quality). Any pointers?

sidchilling··on Launch HN: Bitrig (YC S25) – Build Swift apps on your iPhone
I downloaded the app but it keeps crashing on open
sidchilling··on Introduction to Indian English
I agree. The articles misses some really good ones, - prepone, max-to-max (ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा), scanner (for payment QR-codes)
sidchilling··on Show HN: EchoStream – A Local AI Agent That Lives on Your iPhone
Is this not available in India? Would love to try it.
sidchilling··on (Backup!) Built an AI that brutally roasts your website designs
Does it work? I get thrown to homepage without anything after uploading screenshots and clicking the CTA. Bug? Or intentional?
sidchilling··on Show HN: AI Page Ready – Is Your Website Ready for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude?
Some things I’m curious to hear from HN:

(1) Are you optimizing your content for LLMs yet? (2) What do you think AI traffic will look like 6–12 months from now? (3) What kinds of AI visibility issues have you run into?

Happy to answer anything about how we built the tool or what’s under the hood too.

sidchilling··on I genuinely don't understand why some people are still bullish about LLMs
Experts will be in denial of LLMs for a long time, while the non-experts will swiftly use it to bridge their own knowledge gap. This is the use case for LLMs, maybe more so than 100% correctness.
sidchilling··on Most-Watched Software Engineering Talks of 2024
I don’t like watching videos (or rather can’t watch at night, but can read). To date I haven’t found an AI that can produce a good article from a video. No, not just transcribe the video but actually produce a quality article with images and stuff from the video. Like a human who is instructed as “watch this video and produce a very high quality article that talks about the things talked about in the video”.

Has anyone has any luck with this?

It would be awesome if I can give this link to AI that will produce a PDF, each video being a chapter in the PDF.

sidchilling··on Copilot vs. Cursor vs. Cody vs. Supermaven vs. Aider
Is there any code assistant that can parse entire big codebases and help me implement a “story”?
sidchilling··on Facebook ‘looking into’ hiding of posts calling for PM’s resignation in India
YES! If you’re actually in India, you will know how useful Twitter has been with this. People are amplifying tweets about other people’s needs and other folks are sharing verified leads. All of this without any incentive to do so. Where the government is daily failing, citizens are rising to the occasion.
sidchilling··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
Is there a technical way that would prevent Mighty to read my passwords (if it wanted to)? Or do I have to trust Mighty won’t do that?
sidchilling··on Show HN: Play Games in Slack
The faker game sounds fun! Page would be much easier to read if there were videos of the games.

Any plans of launching for Teams? I guess bigger companies (who were already on outlook) have heavily adopted Teams (and I believe these games might be something that HR teams at bigger companies might be interested in).

sidchilling··on Send Payments in India with WhatsApp
Also by definition there won’t be. Because two apps can capture 60% market share, there’s still 40% to be captured. Free markets would incentivise people to come up with at least 2 other players, no?
sidchilling··on Send Payments in India with WhatsApp
The rule being referred to, I believe, is that RBI doesn’t want any single payment app to have more than 30% market share. I believe, that’s a good thing and good to see it being thought out much earlier in the lifecycle of UPI. When it comes to people’s money, it’s in the interest of the country not to have monopolies.
sidchilling··on Archive of tech interview questions of Google, Amazon, FB, Samsung and et al.
That’s interesting. Could you expand a bit more? How do interviews happen in Europe?

I interviewed with booking.com in Amsterdam a couple years ago and it was the same thing — same questions testing prep.

sidchilling··on Archive of tech interview questions of Google, Amazon, FB, Samsung and et al.
Unfortunately, interviews, as they are currently, are more an indicator of preparation rather than job performance. It’s a game; you gotta play it.
sidchilling··on Ask HN: How to avoid over-engineering software design for future use cases?
Read this post a month ago about future welcome architecture and found it quite practical (with some philosophical musings though), hope it helps - https://www.twowaystolearn.com/posts/future-welcome-architec...
sidchilling··on Ask HN: What, in your opinion, are the greatest and most useful textbooks?

sidchilling··on Ask HN: For you, what makes for a good job description?
Things like salary information, tech stack, processes, hierarchy, responsibilities, etc.
sidchilling··on Ask HN: Developers aged 50, how have you gotten around age discrimination?
Thanks for the excellent advice. I’m 31 and I’m curious to learn what you would tell someone my age to learn about low level stuff.

What are the things you would suggest to learn and what resources do you recommend?

Thanks, again!

sidchilling··on I still miss my headphone jack, and I want it back
I still want to be able to charge my phone and listen to music using the headphone jack. How is that not even a use case anymore? I don’t like the AirPods because they are too easy to lose, and I’m so clumsy with headphones that I buy cheap ones every month, which comes with headphone jack only.

I think Apple made a very bad UX, and never cared about users. I moved to Android phones as a result, which frankly aren’t as inferior as they used to be 4 years ago.

sidchilling··on Ask HN: How do you find freelance work?
How much do you make from Toptal? A year ago I started the process with them, and they told me that they generally have regional rates. They corrected that programmers are free to choose their own hourly rates, but hinted that you won't get projects if your hourly rate is higher than average (They did not openly tell this, but the implication was clear).

They mentioned that the average hourly rate for India was $20 -- something which is way below what I make in the day-job in India. Also, I have worked at much higher rates as a freelancer.

At $20, I just decided that going through their arduous interview process was simply not worth it.

What has been your experience?

sidchilling··on Practical Deep Learning for Coders 2018
Can I still use AWS though? Does the setup scripts remain the same? I had already set up an AWS server (my company has provided us some cash for personal learning) from the old lessons, but haven't started the lessons yet.

It'd be great if I can switch to the new lessons but with AWS.
