sida··on Woman makes $420k by buying insurance on flights she predicted would get delayed
OP said “one of the most...”

Debt is certainly the most common and insurance is the one of the most common

sida··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
But I am just responding to the parent right.

Why are European companies not competitive? Why not break up US large companies and expect them to be competitive with other global companies

sida··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
Isn't this an example that you don't want to break up the companies?

i.e. EU companies are not as competitive, presumably lack scale for lower pricing, lack scale to invest into expensive R&D

And that's bad for consumers

sida··on Google rescinds offers to thousands of contract workers
This is interesting.

Then That’s clearly just lay-off.

sida··on Google rescinds offers to thousands of contract workers
Then that's just a PIP in disguise.

The candidate could very well have been a false positive on the initial hire in the first place. And candidate simply got lucky into that team

sida··on Jepsen Disputes MongoDB's Data Consistency Claims
lol api could be down for a week? What?
sida··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
It is weird to me that even gimlet podcasts are not exclusive to Spotify.

But JRE will become exclusive

sida··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
I honestly don’t care. But Spotify podcasting is so shitty compares to overcast.

The fact that music is mixed up with podcasts makes search and discovery much much worse

sida··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
Adtech would actually make it free. Arguably this is more like cable / Netflix than adtech
sida··on Rand Paul says no-knock warrants 'should be forbidden' in wake of shooting
I mean what about kidnapping / hostage situation.

Is this more about exercising judgement?

Many first-world countries have no-knock warranty but really only the US has so many issues

sida··on Uber cuts 3000 more jobs, closes 45 offices
Internally, Dara was very clear that the layoff would happen in 2 stages for the different organizations
sida··on GM self-driving tech unit Cruise laying off about 8% of staff
> I bet if you did a study and ran the numbers, it would be cheaper to put down rail on existing roads and make them rail-car only, automate those and subsidize rail cars

Guess what, these people have run the numbers

> solve any real transport issues compared to traditional mass transit

I think that's thinking small. Why can't self-driving be applied to mass transit.

Let's take out all the cars and replace them with 15 passenger self-driving vans. And set up many stops that are dynamically routed by UberPool. You can get convenience of a car, the cost of a bus and far less pollution.

sida··on GM self-driving tech unit Cruise laying off about 8% of staff
Or you could see it as, they know who are the low performers. This is a good way to fire low performers in bulk without getting a lot of flak
sida··on Using an iPad as the main display for a Mac Mini
But what I would like is to couch coop games, like switch.

Many games on ipad are not built with couch coops with controllers as first class citizens

sida··on Using an iPad as the main display for a Mac Mini
What I honestly would like is to use the ipad as a display for the switch when I am on the road.

Of course, what would be even better is if ipad had games selection like the switch

sida··on The Office Is Dead
The really interesting thing I learned during covid19 is that, the fact that everybody is WFH, makes WFH better.

In the past, when I WFH, and everybody else is in the office. I was the odd one out and people start to talk amongst themselvces. Sometimes I don't hear well, sometimes I can't get into the discussion politely.

But, since everybody is WFH right now, the whole WFH experience became better and I am more productive in WFH as a result.

sida··on Uber is laying off 3,700, as rides plummet due to Covid-19
You would not stagger it like that.

My suspicion is that the lay off got leaked and it forced the company’s hand. They are probably scrambling to get everything finalized ASAP.

And eng lay-off requires more planning than customer support lay-off

sida··on Facebook uses 1.5B Reddit posts to create chatbot
Oh god. I almost rolled off my chair laughing
sida··on Uber is laying off 3,700, as rides plummet due to Covid-19
Eng layoff is also coming.

This looks to be just for service workers and contractors (like recruiters)

sida··on Uber CEO Says Layoff Decision to Be Announced Within Two Weeks
What do you think should have been done?

The information got leaked, it forces the company to make an announcement.

sida··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
This is kind of scary that companies can patent an interface.

So google cloud is actually expected to also have this potential legal time bomb?

Amazon can sue you and retroactively force you to pay them right? So all they need to do is to wait for the alternatives to become popular

sida··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
Can Amazon actually patent their API (per the google vs oracle case) - basically like prevent other vendors to provide S3 APIs so that Amazon can lock in users.

I am not a lawyer. So this is a genuine / dumb question.

sida··on Why Segment Went Back to a Monolith
Might be a stupid question, it wasn’t clear to me in the article.

Did they go back to a monolith service or a monolith repo? It really just sounded like monorepo

sida··on I Spent $6M on Google Ads Last Year
Is it possible to track the action inside the installer itself?

e.g. each install contains a unique slug, when the installer is opened you use the unique slug to know where it is coming from?

sida··on Amazon asks workers sheltering at home to return or request leave
Same as the 20+ million Americans who are laid off and seeking unemployment?
sida··on European Union Calls for Five Year Strict Ban on Facial Recognition Technology
Exactly, majority of the people in many of the states in the US believes gay marriage to be unethical.

I mean, not long ago, these same majority of people wouldn’t have voted for African americans to go to the same schools as white children.

And that’s all within this current generation

sida··on Mozilla lays off 70
I am starting to see a lot of tech layoffs. Bubble popping?
sida··on Judge rules that student loan debt is dischargeable in bankruptcy
So this judge changed the interpretation of the laws which made student loans more easily dischargeable.

Any chance to make it into the supreme court? Cos arguably, this could make student loan widely dischargeable for people who need it

sida··on Uber stops upfront ride pricing in response to California worker law
This is actually really clever. Maybe Uber can set a base rate of $0.75 per mile and then the driver can elect to increase it at a 25c per mile interval so that the supply is grouped together
sida··on Judge rules that student loan debt is dischargeable in bankruptcy
Could you explain more? I don’t really understand. I thought it is written in law that student loans are not dischargeable
