shutton··on Show HN: Gaggle Mail – Simple group email
Hi, there's no limit on disk space.

We use Google Cloud Datastore which is quite reasonably priced at $0.18 per GB per month.

shutton··on Show HN: Gaggle Mail – Simple group email
I totally get what you mean. It's really hard to prove that you're going to stick around and people are quite right to be scepicle about tech firms who seem to close stuff down as soon as the wind changes direction.
shutton··on Show HN: Gaggle Mail – Simple group email
Fair point but free services get shutdown too.

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

I have made spreadsheets working out how much lists will cost to run for various sizes and levels of activity and I think $10/year covers most reasonable cases.

Some competitors have more tiered pricing but I really wanted to keep things simple with a single headline price.

Thanks for the feedback.

There is a searchable archive of all messages which is only available to the list administrators. Since members of a list aren't required to have any sort of credentials the message archive isn't available to be but I do intend of make options in this area.

The limit of 100 members is mostly an attempt, at this time, to only tragedy small group. I simply didn't want groups of 1000's from the start.

As to how we're different from a MailMan-list etc. Our aim is to make setting up and managing an email list as simple as it can be. Group email is a very effective tool for small groups and we want to make it available to as many as them as possible.

A few of the groups which have signed up were using Google Groups but got fed up with it/wanted something simpler. It's heartening that people are prepared to take a paid alternative over something which is free when it's a better fit.

I was aware of Breeze and looked at what they had done.

It felt strange using a project for inspiration which had been canned after a few months! I believe 37Signals didn't get the traction they were after, but enough traction for 37Signals and enough transaction for me are very different things.

I've really enjoyed using Materialize (http://materializecss.com) with this project, I think those guys have created a really good framework.
shutton··on Show HN: Gaggle Mail – Simple group email
Yeah, that's right.

Hi, I've built this over the last few months and have seen a few people sign up and be quite happy with it (which is nice!).

I'd love to hear any feedback the HN community has and I'd really appreciate any tips people have about marketing this site since I've not done much of that and don't know where to start.

shutton··on British government approves the first spaceport in Europe
I'm not sure a densely populated (relatively) small island that far from the equator is such a choice for a space port.

Also ultra-fast international flights aren't quite as appealing when you've had to travel for 6 hours by train to reach your departure point.

shutton··on Show HN: Migraine.Report - Log, Search and Visualise Migraine Data
I'd been logging my migraines in Google Calendar for a few years and wanted to do something more with the data so I built this.
shutton··on Show HN: We built our first app 100% by ourselves as 2 front end developers
Really like the design, nicely done.
shutton··on Show HN: ICS (iCalendar) file converter
A comment about the appspot.com domain.

I did look at getting a dedicated TLD (i.e. icsconverter.com) for this but with Stripe (quite rightly) requiring SSL when I did the sums for getting a custom domain on SSL with Google App Engine it was around $50/year. Which is ok for a site that's going to be making some money but a little extravagant for a little side project

Especially when compared to $0/year for SSL on a appspot.com subdomain.

shutton··on Show HN: ICS (iCalendar) file converter
This is a quick commute time project I did because I had some data in Google Calendar and wanted to get at it but I could only export it as iCalendar (.ics).

I used Stripe for payments and found it gloriously simple compared to previously doing battle with PayPal.

All comments and feedback welcome, thanks.

shutton··on Show HN: Convenely - A simple way to schedule meeting up with friends
This is a commuter time project I've been working on. It uses nodejs (on Azure) and backbone on the frontend. I've really tried to make the UI work well across screen sizes.

Let me know what you think!

shutton··on Is TDD dead?
Sometimes people take TDD to mean Test Driven Design
shutton··on Is TDD dead?
It has it merits and there's some pieces of code I would not want to write without it but those cases (at least of a front-end dev) are remarkably few.
shutton··on Is TDD dead?
Some interesting conversations between DHH, Kent Beck and Martin Fowler.

DHH can be quite outspoken at times but I think he's right to have this discussion and to have it in public so we can all learn something.

shutton··on Apple Design Awards 2014
Looking at the winners there doesn't seem to be anything massively inspiring and only one dedicated OSX app.

I'm not sure how much of a big deal these awards are.

shutton··on Show HN: Turn an email to a web page
Looks really good, very nice design.
shutton··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
Basically the same problem as my other site Meetifyr - a group of people figuring out which day to do something on. Everyone votes on which days work best from them. The difference for Convenely is the calendar view and every event has it's own mailing list. It doesn't update your calendar.
shutton··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
http://www.meetifyr.com/ - been around for 6 years, haven't touched the code in years, gets around 3k page views and 100 active events a month.

http://www.bookmarks.io/ - working but mothballed.

http://convenely.com - current project, no traffic yet.

shutton··on Show HN: Bookmarks.io - Full text search for your bookmarks (free trial)
Fair point. Which free bookmarking services do you know that provide full content search?
shutton··on Show HN: Bookmarks.io - Full text search for your bookmarks (free trial)
Thanks for the comment, good to know you can see the potential.

You can use the voucher code HNTRIAL for a two month free trial, please let us know what you think.

About the price. We've kept it high while we wait for Google App Engine to announce their pricing for the text search feature we use. We do expect to be able to charge less once we know their pricing (hopefully 25% to 50% less) at which point we can announce our price drop.

shutton··on Show HN: Bookmarks.io - Full text search for your bookmarks (free trial)
Yeah, we just search the pages you've bookmarked. If you Google search for 'fish recipe' you'll get millions of results, if you do the same search on your bookmarks you'll get just the fish recipes you've previously bookmarked. It's no good for finding new fish recipes but great for quickly getting back the fish recipe you've used before.

That's right, we search the version of the page when you bookmarked it.

shutton··on Show HN: Bookmarks.io - Full text search for your bookmarks (free trial)
We've using Google App Engine and their Text Search feature (https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/python/search/o...). It's still experimental and slightly buggy but very easy to use and obviously scales well.

They haven't announced pricing for the service yet which is quite key since search is our main feature.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

I know what you mean about the call to action being camouflaged, I think we're trying to be too clever, we should make it more obvious.

I don't think we're doing a good job of showing how the service should be used either. The idea is you install the bookmarklet or browser extension and then from any page on the internet when you launch the bookmarklet/extension the modal window opens over the top where you can one-click bookmark that current page or search your bookmarks etc.

The Chrome extension adds a feature to pull in all your Chrome bookmarks with a single click.

Looks good. What's your plans with the site, are you going to start charging?
