shruggedatlas··on LLMs are eroding my software engineering career and I don't know what to do
It seems to me that Docker should be far, far down the list on services to recreate in-house with AI.
shruggedatlas··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
Your brain is performing "compute-intensive brute-force attacks on the problem/solution space" as you read this very sentence. You trained patterns on English syntax, structure, and semantics since you were a child and it is supporting you now with inference (or interpretation). And, for compute efficiency, you probably have evolution to thank.
shruggedatlas··on This time is different
What is your position on AI?
shruggedatlas··on Atlassian is acquiring The Browser Company
I wanted you to know that, due to this comment, I "lost" approximately 45 minutes watching George Carlin's best jokes
shruggedatlas··on The Enterprise Experience
That was an eye-opening insight into enterprise software requirements. Thank you for sharing.
shruggedatlas··on GPT-5
Is this a specific example from their demo? I just tried it and Opus 4.1 is able to solve it.
shruggedatlas··on GPT-5
> lower-to-middle of the middle class

The comparison was clearly between the rich and the poor. We can take the 99.99th wealth percentile, where billionaires reside, and contrast that to a narrow range on the opposite side of the spectrum. But, in my opinion, the argument would still hold even if it were the top 10% vs bottom 10% (or equivalent by normalised population).

shruggedatlas··on Try the Mosquito Bucket of Death
I've never attempted it so I don't have any first-hand judgements of its effectiveness. However, the logic in the article seems reasonable. A backyard which already has a high population of mosquitoes implies the area has existing spots with standing water where the eggs are being hatched. Adding controlled spots of water would concentrate those eggs there and kill them off before they have a chance to hatch more eggs and add to the population. Then, the existing adults die off naturally within weeks, and you should be left with a "mosquito free yard"
shruggedatlas··on How to Network as an Introvert
You sound like you have your own issues to resolve if you are this exhausted by work, which doesn't mean the article is a parody just because you are not its exact intended recipient. There are a handful of tips in there that can help engineer more comfortable situations for people who are less confident networking. That's only if someone is willing to engage with the advice and wishes to better themselves with it, instead of just blaming... capitalism?
shruggedatlas··on The fastest way to detect a vowel in a string
This comment seems needlessly unkind
shruggedatlas··on Bruteforcing the phone number of any Google user
What can be done to protect oneself from a SIM swap attack?
shruggedatlas··on What if we made advertising illegal?
Outdoor billboards, product placement, sponsor logos on sports uniforms - yes

Content marketing, public relations, mailing lists - no

"we don't have to destroy all advertising at once to make a positive difference"

shruggedatlas··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
The source report is a much better read. The article barely adds anything of value to it, outside of quoting it a dozen times.
shruggedatlas··on Who died and left the US $7B?
It seems awkward because removing the parenthical expression between the commas leaves a broken sentence:

"The data wasn't erroneous|who are legally forbidden to discuss tax filings."

The best correction would be something like:

"Treasury officials, who are legally forbidden to discuss tax filings, found the data wasn't erroneous."

shruggedatlas··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
What leverage would they have in those negotiations?
shruggedatlas··on Resistance Against Git Merge Hell (2015)
This wouldn't affect what the reviewer sees because the squash commit only happens after the PR is complete and is being merged to master
shruggedatlas··on Devin: AI Software Engineer
> So many people talking about GPT-4 here, or even 3.5 when the SOTA has moved way along.

So what is the SOTA, in your opinion?

shruggedatlas··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
You fit the exact profile of someone who shouldn't bring children into this world. So, congratulations on making the right decision for you and your mental state right now. However, I would caution against extrapolating your one-dimensional opinions about the world into universal facts.
shruggedatlas··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
This is too brilliant to be tucked away in the depths of a HN thread
shruggedatlas··on I only lost 10 minutes of data, thanks to ZFS

shruggedatlas··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
That's an intriguing idea. What is the purpose of it? Can you share screenshots?
shruggedatlas··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
I think you're referring to "The Parable of the Raft", which describes a man who has built a raft and crossed a river with it debating whether to hold on to the raft or not.
