Yes, and that's simply and demonstrably false. There are not always middlemen, as I have already explained.

I can infer what they mean, it doesn't make it a correct statement. Maybe I'm being pedantic, but routers are devices too, and I have computers with multiple NICs that act as routers as well as servers. Intranet vs internet is an arbitrary distinction. If a "device" has an IP address that's reachable from "the internet" then it's on the internet, regardless.

My router and my desktop is one of several billion counterexamples.

> No two devices on the internet are directly connected.

I get the need for brevity and simplicity in a post like this, but is there really a need for obviously false statements?

shric··on Dutch entrepreneurs avoiding negative interest by opening multiple bank accounts
I guess it depends on how you value the security of storing your money in socks vs banks.

Also, an interest rate of -0.5% is not that much worse than 0% -- they're both a few percentage points below inflation.

That's perfectly HN-y; good read, thank you.

shric··on Australia is becoming a surveillance state
Do you have a source for "tens of thousands"? I think it was fewer than 10k.

Thankfully only 3,500 in Sydney out of a population of 5 million. Fortunately the vast majority of Australians aren't completely selfish and thoughtless. Nobody likes lockdowns. The government doesn't benefit from them, it's not lining some evil overlord's pockets.

They'll provide a sheet of paper. For some reason since covid I always forget to bring my phone when going out in Australia
shric··on Australia is becoming a surveillance state
Especially as it was supported by the government.

Fringe and Mindhunter :)

Link 2 is a 404 for me.

Hilariously, Australians protest about their rights by trying their best to extend lockdowns further [1].

I think you meant raymarcher, not raytracer in the last sentence
shric··on Show HN: Micro HTTP server in 22 lines of C
Aside from using small variable names and odd whitespace, it isn't particularly obfuscated.
shric··on Is This Prime?
No, at the cryptographic scale of prime numbers the lookup table would need to be far too big in terms of both time to generate and storage required.

For smaller numbers see various prime sieves (Atkin, Eratosthenes)

Also, at least in my country (Australia), Rick and Morty was censored (bleeps every 15 seconds) on Netflix, so I pirated it for a better experience.

> In all these cases expert human judgement is needed, it is not wise to automatically deploy changes by developers

Isn't this code review? This can and should be enforced before it goes to automatic deployment. If not, what other expert human judgement is needed?

Yes, you need to reach a certain quality bar of your automated testing, and you may choose to implement a canary system before full deployment, but I see no reason to avoid automatic deployment once these safeguards are in place.

I'd say it's the backend's job to accept any of those and reformat accordingly. If you rely on the frontend the backend would still have to validate it anyway.

I've never tried FreeNAS, but am surprised it took so much maintenance. I've been using FreeBSD with an HP Microserver and ZFS for the same purpose for about 10 years. I just install the updates and everything just works. Curious what kind of maintenance is taking up your time?
shric··on My favourite C++ footgun
At first I thought that was a domain and not an org file. :)

Looks like footguns.com is taken but footguns.org is still available.

Kudos for writing something in rust and not appending "written in rust!" everywhere.

Yeah, I bought 8 of these back in the day for two RAID servers. I have one left that I haven't had to replace since.
shric··on English medical records are about to be given away. As GPs, we’re fighting back
Australia had similar with https://www.myhealthrecord.gov.au/ a few years ago. At the time you had to opt out iirc. At least apparently you can opt out at any time and your records will be permanently deleted.

I have a BMW S1000RR with a stock exhaust and I want to get an after market exhaust simply because the stock one sounds awful. I don't want it to be particularly loud, just a more pleasant note. Unfortunately any after market exhaust may be louder. This is why I've held back on buying one.

Being required to enter my email address to continue reading can figuratively make me sick. But it turns out they accept any email address, not necessarily one you own.
