shreezus··on Paying freelancers in equity and dividends
I think Flexile is a great concept, and there's tremendous value in simplifying things like equity & dividends. I'd like to see dividends become the norm for other companies!
shreezus··on Apple's iMessage Service Is Down
Not just iMessage, it looks like there's massive outages across multiple networks including T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T: http://downdetector.com
shreezus··on Tesla's self-driving tech ditched by 98 percent of customers that tried it
Anecdotally I have been using one of the newer versions (12.3.6) and it seems to have improved significantly, however still does "strange" things like unnecessary lane changes or slowing down unnaturally to speed limits (which no driver in LA does). Autopark works well for the most part but takes twice as long as if I were just park the vehicle myself.

Elon claims the next version (12.4 / 12.5) will be milestone improvements in terms of miles per disengagement, but only time will tell.

shreezus··on Unitree G1 Humanoid Agent
The mind-blowing thing is pricing - this thing starts at just $16K.

We’re going to witness an explosion of affordable humanoid robots in every home & business, and as they become increasingly capable the use cases will be nearly limitless. Think deliveries, cleaning, even childcare (Bicentennial Man, anyone?). I think what will be shocking is just how fast this happens, and they’ll likely outnumber humans at some point.

shreezus··on Show HN: I built a non-linear UI for ChatGPT
Third-party clients support this. I like MindMac for instance - it's the "Fork from this message" feature.
shreezus··on Data breach at Kaiser Permanente affects 13.4M people
None of this surprises me one bit. I have worked in the health space for several years, and I have personally seen the inner workings of several insurers and the manmade horrors within.

It blows my mind that these multibillion dollar institutions are so poorly managed on the technology/IT front. I think most people will have their health data likely leaked at some point.

shreezus··on IBM to buy HashiCorp in $6.4B deal
Wow IBM got quite the discount!
shreezus··on Show HN: Flash Notes – Flashcards for Your Notes, LLM, iOS/macOS Sync
Agreed - the language on your site is not very clear in communicating what the app is offering. Perhaps consider a video clip or screenshots, and a more clear description of features?
shreezus··on Ask HN: Recommendations for Local LLMs in 2024: Private and Offline?
I run local LLM's (Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.2) using LM Studio (Ollama works well too I believe) and host a local server on my Mac. I can hit the endpoints the same way you would with OpenAI's chat completions API, and can trigger it inline across my other applications using MindMac.
shreezus··on Last year, an unknown person took nominal control over OpenAI's startup fund
Perhaps it’s not a “human” running the fund but rather one of the autonomous agents OAI is currently testing internally…
shreezus··on End of an era: Final Delta IV heavy rocket carries NROL-70 on historic mission
This article sounds like it was written by ChatGPT. That said, it's wild we were still using expendable rockets like Delta IV Heavy when SpaceX offerings are objectively better & cheaper. What SpaceX has done for the industry is nothing short of incredible.
shreezus··on Tests for consciousness in humans and beyond
Consciousness & intelligence are orthogonal. It’s highly plausible we achieve superintelligence before we have conscious machines.

That said, understanding consciousness is not necessarily a prerequisite for engineering it. It may very much end up being an emergent phenomenon tied to sensory integration & processing, in which case it ends up self-assembling under the right circumstances. Exciting times…

shreezus··on Figure 01 robot demos its OpenAI integration
Super excited to follow your progress! I loved the SmarterChild throwback on your site, those sounds instantly triggered nostalgia.
shreezus··on Ask HN: How's the current state of hiring in the LLM field?
Unless you're talking about research, LLM's are considered a tool, not a new field.
shreezus··on Video generation models as world simulators
V-Jepa is actually super impressive. I have nothing but respect for Yann LeCun & his team, they really have been on a rampage lately.
shreezus··on Memory and new controls for ChatGPT
When can we expect autonomous agents & fleet management/agent orchestration? There are some use cases I'm interested in exploring (involving cooperative agent behavior), however OAI has made no indication as to when agents will be available.
shreezus··on Nasopharyngeal Lymphatics Found to Be Crucial for Cerebrospinal Fluid Outflow
There's been a lot of recent interest in mouth taping during sleep, which can help alleviate issues related to mouth breathing or snoring. Anecdotally I've seen improvement in overall sleep quality (quantified w/ a wearable device) when I use tape vs without.
shreezus··on LTSE shutters cap table management business (formerly captable.io)
I feel like they could have spun it off separately (especially given what's going on with Carta).
shreezus··on Chinese researchers planning 1,600-core chips that use an entire wafer
There are techniques to disable nodes that fail testing, so it shouldn't be a problem (within reason).
shreezus··on Alaska Airlines 737 Max makes emergency landing due to depressurization
Aren’t maintenance protocols handled by the FAA? Otherwise it would be implied that budget carriers like Spirit or Alaska would be “less” safe (which isn’t the case AFAIK).
shreezus··on Carta doing unsolicited tender offer outreach to their customers' investors
Are they opting-in all users by default? This is pretty grimy on Carta’s part!
shreezus··on Cleaning up my 200GB iCloud with some JavaScript
On this topic...anyone know the best way to export an entire iCloud Photo Library at full resolution?
shreezus··on Happy New Year HN!
We’re incredibly fortunate to be living through one of the greatest time periods imaginable right now. Happy 2024, onwards and upwards
shreezus··on Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi say they will use Tesla's EV charging plug
There really additional friction dealing with payments, cards, buttons etc. Personally when I park, I just want to stick the charging plug into my car and walk away and not think about it, the same way I do with my phone every night.
shreezus··on Ask HN: Cheapest hardware to run Llama 2 70B
Fair warning - tools like SageMaker are good for simple use cases, but SageMaker tends to abstract away a lot of functionality you might find yourself digging through the framework for. Not to mention - it's easy to rack up a hefty AWS bill
shreezus··on Facebook-owned sites were down
It's quite a coincidence for this to coincide with the whistleblower report + rumors of Peter Thiel (perhaps via Palantir?) involved in leveraging FB for the 2022 midterm elections.

I'm not suggesting that this is the case, but a failure of this scale (with internal systems also down) could allow scrubbing of evidence without leaving traces.
