shprd··on Pie doesn't need to be original unless you claim it so
But there was nothing demanded that the users needed to do. Just "Hey I made this cool thing and it does XYZ." That was my point. If the word 'expectations' entails things like one feeling good about making a small difference in the world then I meant something else and that was a poor choice of words on my part.
shprd··on Pie doesn't need to be original unless you claim it so
I don't know about you but I'm speaking from experience, not hypothetically. I shared multiple open source side projects where I made something for myself then shared it with the world.

> Typically they expect to get something out of it that they don’t get by their project just sitting on GitHub.

Can you expand? the vast majority of open source projects don't make a dime. I don't see the ulterior motive you're talking about. Unless you mean like they get more GitHub stars?

shprd··on Pie doesn't need to be original unless you claim it so
What are the expectations? Considering i'm specifically talking about free software often hosted on GitHub?
shprd··on Pie doesn't need to be original unless you claim it so
Yeah, the main difference is software is accessible online so it's competing on a worldwide stage. This make people feel there's an abundance of software and they get picky.

This is totally fine from economic perspective. But when it comes to side projects that aren't selling to consumers, there's no reason to bring down someone if you see no value in their work. Especially when they're sharing it for free with no expectations, like most software side projects we see here hosted on GitHub.

Look at many show HN, someone sharing their little fun project, then you've some entitled users asking

What does this offer over this product of fortune 500 company? Why should I use it?
Often the side project still have some advantage but do these people realize how ridiculous and entitled they sound? The author shared a fun project for free, they're not asking for a billion $ investment.
shprd··on Show HN: Wd-40, a static webserver with automatic hot-reloads
> Static web servers have been a solved technical problem for going on 25 years.

That only shows your ignorance. By that logic, transportation has been a solved problem for millennia. We were moving from A to B for quite some time.

When your wife tells you "Hey, look what I cooked for dinner"? Do you tell her "I have seen this dish 30 years ago, why don't you develop new recipes instead?"

Find something better to do than belittling others side projects that they shared for fun.

shprd··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
Well done. Do you've plans for further development to grow this?
shprd··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
Really cool with great execution.

Out of curiosity, I'd love to know more:

- how the backend look like?

- Are the channels are based on a static pool of videos by category?

- Is there a "schedule" for a channel or picked at random?

shprd··on The TikTok Case Will Be Determined by What's Behind the Government's Black Lines
So you want to copy the tactics of an authoritarian regime like China? Your strategy to "get back at them" is to take them as inspiration out of spite?

You'd be destroying your own country by setting precedents and new legislation and suffer its implications forever, when instead you could respond with a capitalism mindset, understand the market and put together a coordinated effort to kick their asses and make them lose mindshare.

Ew? Does this vulgarity represent 'the culture' you're proud of? Judging by your manners, one can tell that you have a very rich culture. I'm kind of jealous. Feel free to expose yourself more.

Colonizers vs migrants:

Let me help you understand the difference, Who appointed the chancellor? Who is passing laws and enacting mandates? Who control the police and military?

I see, it's not only your manners that's lacking, even your education is lower class. It feels like you only read the table of contents when studying history.

You're just living in full paranoia, asking other people to erase their identity because they're different. I advise you to travel abroad more and make friends with people from different cultures. Every country in the world, except maybe North Korea, has people from different backgrounds who are proud and attached to their heritage, religion, language, and culture.

There are many german diaspora abroad who are attached to their culture and don't let go of their identity, they even establish their own political parties and organizations, by your logic the germans are colonizing other countries, right? You're delusional

If you want to repeat Brexit, go ahead. The world would be thankful for a new laughing stock.

shprd··on Singapore's Baby Bust: Record low births in 2023 deepen demographic crisis
> The populations that are colonizing Germany

What's up with your racism and hate? Literally No one is colonizing you

1- Foreigners account to only 17% of the population (and 70% of them are from Europe) [1]

2- If we look at countries with the highest proportion of immigrants, Germany is no. 18 on the list [2]

If you've an issue with people from outside Germany moving there, change your policy. If there are problems, fix your system. That's how every country work.

jeez, do you still live in the middle ages?

shprd··on Journalist casualties in the Israel-Gaza war
> Why did 500 Israeli soldiers die in Gaza from your perspective?

Are saying you committed massacres and bombed hospitals, UN schools, mosques, churches, and ambulances, as some sort of retaliation?

leveling the entire place, displacing a million, and killed tens of thousands of innocent civilians most of whom were women, children, medical staff and red cross members because...? enlighten me please

shprd··on Journalist casualties in the Israel-Gaza war
> What if those launch sites are top of hospitals or media buildings?

Is that a claim or just a hypothetical scenario? If it's a claim, please provide evidance that supports hospitals were used to launch rockets.

You know what is not hypothetical? the fact that Israel bombed hospitals, UN schools, churches, mosques, civilian shelters, ambulances, and killed tens of thousands of innocent civilians: women, children, journalists, UN staff, Red Crescent members. You know what else isn't hypothetical? Israeli minister's call to wipe out a Palestinian village. It's not about a hospital here or there. Just me typing that sentence makes me sick. The fact that we're past the point where a hospital bombing makes a difference in illustrating the crimes committed. Sadly, the attrocities are far greater.

Here are some not hypothetical Massacres and war crimes committed by Israel:

> meaning they are certainly inflated

Do you have even a glimpse of evidance? or are we speculating now? They deaths are published by full name and national number. Regardless, the masscare is ongoing and the exact number doesn't change anything. It's not like there's a certain threshold they aimed for.

It's disgusting that your first response to reading 30,000 people were killed was to speculate and try to undertone it.

shprd··on Journalist casualties in the Israel-Gaza war
> Pretty sure if a mob stormed any normal government border they would be shot.

I'd think they'd point their weapons at the ones actually storming not the journalists

Unless you're saying the IDF didn't point and just fired aimlessly in the march's general direction?

> Israel will get shot at and not be allowed to shoot back.

The logic doesn't really follow

What shots exactly? the missiles? Attack the launch sites. They're pretty clear as they expose themselves. Israel has 24/7 surveillance it shouldn't be a challenge. Can you support your claim by showing evidence that a hospital was used to launch missiles?

You likely don't have evidence that Israel is targeting anything. It seems every street in the city was indiscriminately bombed, every hospital was distroyed, and tens of thousands of civilians were murdered. That's a massacre not a "response".

shprd··on Microsoft is using malware-like pop-ups in Win11 to get people to ditch Chrome
Not really.

For starters, Windows is an operating system, not a website contained in browser. There are many differences in usage, privacy, security, etc.

Also, unlike a website or browser, if you got fed up and decide to leave, then changing the OS can range from challenging to practically impossible (outside your control).
