shousper··on You're Young. I'm 18. So what?
I used to think the same as Jared. I was 14 and writing DirectX 8 mini games for fun in VB6. Thought I could get a job soon, and I'd set myself up nice and early in life.

In high school I had a few "clients" for websites and such as well, as I'd learn PHP by that stage, along with the usual XHTML and CSS - almost just like Jared. It's not the same though.

In the professional space, there is SO many more factors that you're just not ready for until you've worked for a company or two.

That being said, there are exceptional people out there, and they shouldn't be judged by their age. Soon I think there will be more of them. We really just have to remember that no matter how old or "wise" we supposedly get, we're no better than anyone else. We all deserve a chance sometimes.

""" Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We are the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world. We are all part of the same compost heap.

shousper··on Xiki: A shell console with GUI features.
My condolences. I know your pain.
shousper··on Coding skill vs. employee skill
I hate to refute everything you've just said, but sadly what you've described has not been the case my (tiny) 7 years working in IT..

I really hope you're right about the future though.

shousper··on Coding skill vs. employee skill
Thanks for posting this.

It actually made my skin crawl reading the article and imagining the state of software a decade or two from now in a world filled with Gabriellas, because "that's what you've gotta do to get ahead".

Of course, with the rate at which technology is "taking over the world", I wouldn't be surprised to see the required technical understanding of even managers start to rise, with that of consumers. Hopefully we might see some relief if that happens, ha!

A question though.. what do you do if you're 80% coder, 20% communicator and your boss just doesn't seem to appreciate it? Keep job hopping until you find where you fit? Because that doesn't seem like such a good idea.. especially not where I live =S

shousper··on We Are Now One Year Away From Global Riots, Complex Systems Theorists Say
That depends how much you trust your corporate or government funded researchers :)
shousper··on Ask HN: What are your failed projects / ideas?
I can choose option 4? I don't have the time and/or financial support to even give it a real shot.

Or is that the same as not taking enough risks?

shousper··on My intro to LESS - If you're not using it, you should be.
It'd be good if the major browsers decided to adopt one (or some?) of LESS/Stylus/SASS natively. Then it wouldn't be such a pain to tweak your stylesheets using these..
shousper··on Napkin - A Rapid Web Prototyping Tool
Doesn't seem to be working very well on my FF 14.0.1 on Mac 10.8 - works okay in latest Chrome though :)
shousper··on How to Get a Job as a Developer in Less Than Six Months
You're right, my response was probably a little angsty. There are some that are willing to expand and learn more and they usually turn out to be awesome developers with innovative ideas all the time. I was probably more referring to the "job" types, who don't care for what you might have to teach them and they just wind up getting in your way =\

Hopefully the future will hold more career type developers in my sector, but we'll have to wait and see =)

shousper··on How to Get a Job as a Developer in Less Than Six Months
Wow.. so I really could have landed a programming job when I was 13? Damn. Maybe I should have just believed in myself more like this guy.

I shudder to think of the quality of his code and the projects he or people like him are let loose on.

Awesome that he's passionate and landed something, but underneath it just makes me cringe because I see the shithouse quality of work that comes out of people probably equally skilled, but not as passionate, everyday.

I should move to America..

shousper··on Ask HN: Recommendations for a desktop app development environment?
If it's just for uploading files, I would (if you haven't already) seriously consider your options for just building it into the web app.

Otherwise, I'd vote Qt/C++ as I've seen quite a few solid, fast apps built on this platform, though I'm not a C++ dev.

shousper··on Is Cold Fusion Finally Being Accepted by Scientists?
Hmm, interesting that you guys are all about facts and convey that without a shred of optimism.

Regardless of the source or accuracy of the article, would it not be awesome if the answer was yes?

shousper··on Let's build a Tesla museum (The Oatmeal initiative)
I just mentioned this article to a workmate and he didn't even know who Tesla was =(
shousper··on H - The surprising truth about heroin and addiction
This is really good to hear from someone in the field, thank you.

Those numbers for the methadone program could be purely from population growth, but then considering the state of the world its probably not entirely either. (Not that I'd know)

shousper··on Survey: Why Are You Using CoffeeScript?
it's not that thrilling.
shousper··on Twitter suffers sustained outage in hacker attack
That sounds like a plot for an attack! =P Probably mass SMS.. iMessage/BBM, something like that?
shousper··on My weekend project: anonymous, realtime message board with socket.io
It's like real-time reddit.. its be fun, but probably hard to make constructive, lol

I like it, and envy the fact you could just create this on a whim over a weekend. I wish I had that kind of discipline when it comes to some of my spontaneous ideas!

shousper··on HN 2.0 2.0
This is the second post I've seen of late with someone trying to redesign or change the face of HN.

Has nobody thought to just create an awesome userscript/style?

shousper··on PHP: A fractal of bad design
It was a question, and mattvot answered it.
shousper··on PHP: A fractal of bad design
In that case..

- I feel there is more important stuff for me to do with my life than worry about the structure of a common language.

I actually think you answered your own question :) A love of simplicity is as meaningful as a love of good structure, consistency or design.

I envy your ability to -not- want for something better.

shousper··on Pow.js - Algorithmic sunburst generator via CSS, canvas and jQuery.
I liked 100000 better.
shousper··on Step by Step UI Design
I'd just like to second this. Would be very interested in something that can cover the initial pen and paper processes for UI design.
shousper··on Why I'm a Pirate
I still don't see anyone offering a viable solution..

There are a lot of variables that come into play for a generic copyright or IP law that encompasses all creative works. The first of which should probably be scope.

Physical and non-physical creations; a painting or a jpg; a photo of a painting in jpg format; a photo of a photo of a painting in jpg format.

The digital work - the internet - has changed the world forever and we're not going back. Some form of "SOPA" or "PIPA" is inevitable.

The question is simple: what are you going to do about it?

shousper··on Assange: VISA is a national security problem
"You are free to do as we tell you" - always springs to mind.
shousper··on The Perfect Domain Name
Guess I got lucky.. maybe by staying off the radar. After having my domain for a few weeks now, I just went and grabbed g+, fb and tw accounts/pages for it =D

Thanks for the tip though! Didn't think of this at all..

shousper··on Anonymous is more powerful than you think.
Regardless, it was probably crossed out because they aren't just destroying the American economy, they're destroying the global economy.

Not that I care..

shousper··on Anonymous is more powerful than you think.
I don't think "anonymous" is or was ever intended to be interpreted as a singular entity.

As the title says, "Anonymous is you" = everyone.
