shortsightedsid··on Stealth Tank Unveiled by Poland
Only one problem. The enemy can't surrender to an Aircraft. So even with all the air superiority, you still need the Cavalry. Source - http://bluenred.com/2010/11/11/they-can-not-surrender-to-air...
shortsightedsid··on For a Better Brain, Learn Another Language
True. As a fellow South Indian forced to learn languages that I never used, I can completely relate to this point.
shortsightedsid··on For a Better Brain, Learn Another Language
I really wonder if these studies can be extended to countries which are naturally multi-lingual. By that I mean countries where there are more than 1 language spoken. E.g. Switzerland has German, Italian, French and Romansh as official languages. That means even its more than likely that the average Swiss will know more than 1 language. Therefore, the question I have is whether the Swiss have better brains than someone in England who speaks only English.
shortsightedsid··on How Unreliable is UDP?
There are several alternative transports being proposed (including the 'unusual' CoAP over websockets), but I wonder if they can be implemented with the original constraints of 8bit micros as servers. Maybe its possible, but not sure if there is a need and hence the new TCP proposals.
shortsightedsid··on How Unreliable is UDP?
CoAP or Constrained Application Protocol for IoT/M2M is being defined by the IETF is on top of UDP. One of the reasons is UDP's simplicity thereby making it easy to implement on microcontrollers. I guess there should be more love for UDP coming.
shortsightedsid··on Ask HN: What is your daily rate?
Why? The minimum wage in Australia and it's legal boundaries do not apply to other countries. Plus, I don't see why there is an ethical issue in outsourcing work to another country where rates are lower.

The assumption you are probably making is that $9 an hour is too low. That's right if you are in Australia, but is that low for Indonesia?

shortsightedsid··on Show HN: Dreamlance – A Trusted Platform for Freelance Professionals
I tried to sign up as a Freelancer, but it seems to take in only specific skills. My focus is on C/C++ and Embedded software.

It's a bit ironic considering the screenshot shows C code but the skills don't even allow for C to added.

shortsightedsid··on What kids around the world eat for breakfast
Need to try Brekkie the next time I'm in Bangalore for sure!
shortsightedsid··on What kids around the world eat for breakfast
Breakfast in South India esp. Karnataka/Bangalore is quite varied. Each day means a different breakfast and both parents and kids usually eat the same food. What we do is pick from one of these each day

1. Dosa - Similar to Crepes but not sweet.

2. Idli - A Rice Cake

3. Uppittu or Upma - Semolina with Vegetables

4. Rava Dosa

5. Rava Idli

6. Vada - Deep Fried rice doughnut

7. Cereal - Not a traditional breakfast and usually rare

8. Toast with Jelly/Butter

9. Vermicelli with Vegetables

10. Awwalaki or Poha - Flattened Rice with Vegetables

It's a bit over the top for sure, even by Indian standards. I'm not sure if people from other states in India choose between all these. I would be bored stiff to eat the same breakfast everyday. One other thing to note is that usually traditional breakfasts are not sweet and do not have any sugar in them. That's for later!

shortsightedsid··on Ask HN: Developers above 35 – what are you doing?
37. Write code everyday and loving it. I run my own consultancy - www.heptaxel.com.
shortsightedsid··on Japan's groundbreaking bullet train is 50 years old
That's pretty cool. I had a chance to travel on the Shinkansen from Osaka to Tokyo last year. It was in the evening and so I couldn't see Mt. Fuji or anything. But it was just incredible esp. the part where the train bends like a bike to take corners.
shortsightedsid··on 5 Ways to Get Engineers to Actually Do What You Want
It actually depends on who "You" are.

Are you the Sales guy who promised the moon?

Are you the Marketing guy whose Copy doesn't match the product?

Are you the CEO battling fires?

Are you the CTO wondering if why the engineers don't want to move to the last new fad?

Are you the Customer Success guy getting buried under customer issues?

Are the VP Engineering trying to maintain schedule?

In all cases, it's only about the customer. It's not what "You" want that's important but what the customer wants.

shortsightedsid··on What It's Like to Build a Startup in Gaza
democratically empowered only means rule of the majority. If it meant peaceful, non-violent, then the only country in the world that is democratic is probably Costa Rica. It also does not mean a Western Ideal monoculture. While all the things that you do bring up are horrible stuff, and should not be condoned, it does not take away from the fact that there were elections and Hamas won.
shortsightedsid··on Ask HN: How do you name your servers?
One of my clients likes to name his servers after Biblical characters. I personally prefer dry name like laptop01, laptop02, server01, server02 etc...

shortsightedsid··on Americans abroad are giving up their citizenship as banks shut down accounts
If there is a marketplace then it's value will be determined by that market. If people can move into apartments and can be interviewed for it, the same could apply here. Obviously, I haven't thought this out completely and naturally there are all sorts of complications, but in reality, the question is - why can't people freely migrate from country to country? Naturally there are costs involved, a legal bearing, maybe even a quarantine timeline, but it should be possible. People did that all the time until the 20th century and therefore, it's an artificial barrier that's been put up.
shortsightedsid··on Americans abroad are giving up their citizenship as banks shut down accounts
I wonder if there will ever be a time when there is a marketplace of citizenship. There are plenty of non-americans who want to become US citizens or immigrate legally. And at the same time there are US citizens going the other way.

An example could be an Italian wanting to move to the US because he works in Tech and a US citizen wanting to move to Italy because he works in Fashion. A marketplace would allow the two to work out a citizenship swap, with the necessary immigration paperwork.

In my view it is a win-win because

a. The immigration is two way.

b. In a global economy we can expect more and more people to move across countries. This service would facilitate that

c. The immigrants would want to do such a thing out of real interest in improving their lives and thereby the lives of their chosen country.

Given that Passports are a fairly new invention that's about a 100 years old, (thanks to the French and Germans just before WWI), I don't see why it can't be created.

>> * Perks and benefits probably aren’t in their vocabularies unless they have families to support

> As a 27 year old cynical bastard I don't really need perks and benefits. Just pay me more, I can handle my own "free" lunch and stuff. Promise.

Even as a 35 year older freelancing bastard, I agree completely with this. I have a family to support and I don't care about potato chips and sweet macbooks. It's simple - SHOW ME THE MONEY! That's why I like consulting for startups.

shortsightedsid··on The Qt Company Introduces a Unified Website
I'm one of those 800000+ devs. I like QT with it's Slots and Signals!

I've used it mainly on embedded platforms for UI.

shortsightedsid··on Ask HN: Do you trust php startups?
End of the day, what makes a startup successful is customers. What customers care about is whether you solve their problem and bring value.

One of the ways that startups like to attract dev talent is by saying how cool they are - the latest fad, the latest stack and free snacks. But that's not what people care about. So, focus on solving their problems and not what your platform is.

shortsightedsid··on Is it right for this company to only pay $12/hour?
What you are saying makes sense.

$12/hour for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 4 weeks a month = $1920 per month. Assuming 12 months (even though we are 4 weeks short) we get $23040.

So, its not just Vietnam/Laos or the like, but right here in the US. If we do bring in the rest of the world, $23K per year is higher than the average salary worldwide. Source - http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-17512040

shortsightedsid··on Rhine – A Lisp on LLVM
FWIW, SBCL does exactly that. You can defun a function and disassemble it right down to assembly. What this project does is slightly different which is to use LLVM to achieve the same thing.
shortsightedsid··on Ask HN: What chat client/server you use regularly?
I'am primarily a command line irc kind of guy but I worked with a team that was all Windows. To get them on IRC, I introduced them to Quassel. It's QT based and it works just fine.
shortsightedsid··on What to do when your startup gets sued by a big player

shortsightedsid··on Maps that illustrate the global economy
The ironic thing is that the Vijayanagara Empire in India (Peak 1500s) had extensive water management and sanitation. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vijayanagara_Empire). This was 300 years before London had its first severs.

And now, the situation is reversed. While Colonialism is an oft repeated cause whereby everything of native ingenuity was systematically destroyed, what is depressing is that even 65 years after Independence, Poverty & Public Health are still issues that affect India.

Pretty sure that Andrew Tanenbaum would comment about Microkernels being superior and how monolithic kernels are doomed to fail and belong in the past!
shortsightedsid··on Internet Of Things Microcontrollers
All the above projects are interesting, but are essentially hobby/devkits. Are you planning to use them to prototype or do you have an end product in mind?

For prototype any of the above is fine but for an end product keep production/supply chain costs as your primary concern. Your end product will look nothing like any of the boards that you shortlist.

shortsightedsid··on The Middle East Friendship Chart
Some of the issues go back thousands of years. In a sense, it also shows the genius of Prophet Mohammad. From a historical point of view, one of his greatest achievements was to unite the Arabs. That's something that was never done before or since. So, simplifying it as just a land dispute isn't right.
