shorts_theory··on The Huawei Disaster Reveals Google’s Iron Grip on Android
To my knowledge, this is based on Plasma Mobile which shares some features from the KDE Plasma desktop environment and uses Qt for widgets.

shorts_theory··on Intel Stockpiling 10nm Chips
Yes, that's the one. Anandtech did a pretty good analysis of Cannonlake here: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13405/intel-10nm-cannon-lake-...

Not sure if I agree. The top-end Intel Wi-Fi cards 826X/926X have excellent performance compared to almost any other card I've used. Throw in Intel's excellent Linux support and it's hard to find a better option in the laptop space.
shorts_theory··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential
FWIW OneNote has an ugly grayish tint to the notes UI in Firefox and only looks good in Chrome. This is a bug which affects Word Online too.
shorts_theory··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential
The moment I switched from Evernote to Onenote was the time EN screwed up the formatting of one of my very important ornate lists. To make things worse, through an unlucky combination of keystrokes I deleted everything I had in my note, only to find that version control was a Premium feature of Evernote.

I promptly used the free "Recommend to a friend" 1 month trial to recover my note and used the importer to move everything to OneNote and I haven't looked back since.

I agree, Firefox's Awesome Bar is the single best implementation of combining local and web results I have ever used. You can even set local results to appear at the top so the order of items doesn't jump around once the Google results are loaded and populated in the dropdown.

I believe that's only for the Google Summer of Code if you live in the US. IIRC, GSoD participants do not receive a stipend.

TIL. That's really cool.

I actually really like Calibre's UI for nostalgic reasons. The oversized icons remind me a lot of WinZip 98, which was one of the few programs I remember back from when I was 5 years old.

I found the crew's control of the dimming function far too aggressive on Air India. Even on a midday flight at 1330, the windows were dimmed all throughout till we landed at around 2200. It didn't help that I couldn't sleep throughout, so it was painful to be in a cabin with next to zero natural light.
