shortrounddev2··on Vibe engineering
I think the majority of people I've worked with who have the title of "Software Engineer" do not like coding. They got into it for the money/career, and dream of eventually moving out of coding into management. I can count the number of coders who I've met who like coding on one hand
shortrounddev2··on Say Goodbye
Yeah why even send them a message if you're not interested in actually talking? What do they get out of it? What do you get out of it?
shortrounddev2··on Paged Out Issue #7 [pdf]
I wouldn't worry about it for people printing at home. Just provide files in landscape A4 size with a layout friendly to home printing/stapling (i.e, front and back covers on the first page). People will print out crappy versions but they'll be able to read it
shortrounddev2··on SEC approves Texas Stock Exchange, first new US integrated exchange in decades
Theres a lot of reasons people will list (cultural, cost of living, quality of life) but the real answer is

1. Texas is a corrupt state and you can bribe your way in to power

2. No income tax

shortrounddev2··on Paged Out Issue #7 [pdf]
There doesnt seem to be anything on the site for actually printing out a personal copy, though the magazine says it does. Everything on the printing page says to just send email. Where can I find some printer friendly documents?
shortrounddev2··on The AI coding trap
A friend of mine who is newer to coding than me is worried that by using AI so much, he's losing his ability to code, and its also killing his motivation because using AI to generate code is just not fun. We do "analog coding sessions" together where we code together without LLM assistance. Its much more enjoyable!
shortrounddev2··on The Word Made Lifeless. Are we becoming stochastic parrots?
Yes, completely agree. Marshall Mcluhan used the term "extensions of man" in the subtitle for "Understanding Media" to refer to information technology (in his day, TV). He said that in the same way a car or our clothes become an extension of our bodies, information technology becomes an extension of our central nervous system, and as the world becomes more connected through information, we begin to form a global village, where people on the other side of the country or even the earth begin to share a common memetic understanding. Things far away become immediate and personal and the layers which we filter them through become thinner, giving a kind of sameness to how we react to new information
shortrounddev2··on The Word Made Lifeless. Are we becoming stochastic parrots?
I believe that the different topologies of the kind of "idea graph" in the human mind is becoming less diverse. That, as media consolidates and becomes more accessible in all parts of the globe, the diversity of modes of thought decreases as people become, more or less, Americanized
shortrounddev2··on John Carmack's arguments against building a custom XR OS at Meta
yeah and Doom Guy takes a lot of issues with Masters of Doom. You get the impression that MoD was looking to create a McCartney vs Lennon story and stretched the truth to do so (there are several factual errors in the book).

In Doom Guy, though, Romero says that after he left iD, he heard from others still working there that the company had become something of a dictatorship under Carmack, and that within X months (I forget how many), half the company had quit. Romero also qualifies several times that they were all in their early/mid-20s and didn't have the requisite life experience to be handling business situations well

shortrounddev2··on John Carmack's arguments against building a custom XR OS at Meta
Masters of doom portrays carmack as a total dictator of a boss. Doom Guy by John Romero seems to back this up
shortrounddev2··on How do I get into the game industry
Yes but it's difficult to distinguish your game from theirs in the search results. It's not like people play a demo of every game and then buy the best one
shortrounddev2··on Some users have noticed settings that let Meta analyze and retain phone photos
There are hundreds of ways to secure a laptop and ensure your privacy. Why are there almost no good ways to use a smartphone in a secure and private way?
shortrounddev2··on Rendering a game in real time with AI
AI can't even hide its own seams. The seams are kind of the defining characteristic of AI.
shortrounddev2··on Ask HN: Do you read your own PR?
I check the commit messages to make sure i didnt use my personal git credentials (as i sometimes do), i comb through the git diff to make sure the changes are all what theyre supposed to be. i avoid whitespace or stylistic changes because they distract from the main point. I run git diff and git status maybe 10 times befire i submit a PR

my coworkers, from what i can tell, are much more incorrectly confident in the quality of their PRs

shortrounddev2··on Proposal: AI Content Disclosure Header
Years ago people were arguing that fashion magazines should have to disclose if they photoshopped pictures of women to make them look skinnier. France implemented this law, and I believe other countries have as well. I believe that we should have similar laws for AI generated content.

Beautiful website
shortrounddev2··on Temporary suspension of acceptance of mail to the United States
If the answer to a lawless president is a cowardly and corrupt congress, then god help us. Economic policy simply cannot be trusted to politicians whose only incentive is re-election and serving campaign donors
shortrounddev2··on Temporary suspension of acceptance of mail to the United States
We should have something like the federal reserve, but for trade policy. A board of governors nominated and confirmed by the senate in 8 year rotations. Politicians cannot be trusted to craft economic policy. I am dubious that they should be crafting fiscal policy either since theyve shown they cant be trusted with that either
shortrounddev2··on Making games in Go: 3 months without LLMs vs. 3 days with LLMs
If you copy a nintendo-platform game which hasnt gotten any love in a long time, put effort into it, and sell it on PC, then yes, you can sell a lot. Harvest Moon hasn't had a good game in over a decade, which is why Stardew Valley was so successful. Similarly, Pokemon has been neglected for generations and there have been a few successful games in the genre, like coromon.

But if you mean copying an already successful PC game with AI Slop assets and putting absolutely no thought into what makes the game good, then you probably should work in a field you actually care about instead

shortrounddev2··on Ban me at the IP level if you don't like me
Why not just ban all IP blocks assigned to cloud providers? Won't halt botnets but the IP range owned by AWS, GCP, etc is well known
shortrounddev2··on Is 4chan the perfect Pirate Bay poster child to justify wider UK site-blocking?
I think the world needs a 2007 /b/ right now
shortrounddev2··on Halt and Catch Fire Syllabus (2021)
I dont remember donna having any flaws, shes just surrounded by morons and babies

When donna pointed out how popular chat was, cameron wanted to kill it because it wasnt her idea, even if it was perfectly in line with her vision for what computers could be. To me she's just an arrogant narcissist

shortrounddev2··on Halt and Catch Fire Syllabus (2021)
She was alright in season 1. She was young and inexperienced and she got too much shit from other people. In season 2/3 she has money and her own company and anytime anyone with more experience than her gives her even the smallest amount of advice she responds like someone is trying to break into her house. Worse, when someone has a good idea that isnt hers, she shuts it down
shortrounddev2··on Halt and Catch Fire Syllabus (2021)
I liked HCF as a show but I couldnt stand Cameron. It seems like you could always rely on her to do the wrong thing
