shofetim··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (October 2026)
SEEKING WORK

Location: Montana, USA

Remote: Yes

Email: jordan@jordanschatz.com

Website: jordanschatz.com & noionlabs.com

17+ years of experience, startups, CTO for mid-sized company, consultant for fortune 500s.

I do DevOps and do systems/hypervisor level work in Rust.

I have recently helped several startups save dramatically on their AWS invoices, while at the same time improving performance, and making it easier to manage. I'm experimenting to see if doing so as a service "has legs".

What you get (for free):

An expert consultation and written plan (written by me, not AI slop) that details two options:

1. How to save money, improve operations, security etc on your current platform.

2. What it would look like if you moved to a private, hardware assisted cloud that I manage for you.

I'm hoping you will take the second option. If it doesn't save you at least 25% and make operations better, then don't bother. If you choose it, you only pay for the monthly hosting. I will migrate your services from your current cloud provider, help you setup reliable DevOps processes, manage the infra, etc.

But if you don't pick the second option, you still get the free consultation and write up. Sometimes you can pay me to implement the recommendations, but mostly I'm too busy supporting the second option.

Let me know: jordan@jordanschatz.com

shofetim··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (September 2026)
Location: Northwest Montana / US Mountain Timezone

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: Rust, Linux Networking, Hypervisors, Containerization, Docker, Wireguard, SQL, AWS etc (more upon request)

Résumé/CV: https://jordanschatz.com/resume.html (intentionally out of date, see below)

Email: jordan@noionlabs.com

Why I may be what you want:

- Experience: I have 17 years of professional experience

- I've worked in the public sector, private sector, startups, enterprises & Fortune 500s

- I've been CTO multiple times / am comfortable in the board room or C-suite

- I care about customers & product, I can help with sales, product road map, guiding a team, or as an individual contributor

- I have experience with the full stack: front-end, back-end, DevOps, system level programming & networking

- Teams are important to me. I want to see the team, and the company thrive. Often that means inglorious toil. I'm cool with that.

- I am comfortable matching any US time zone's business hours

What I am looking for:

A company that values understanding what they are shipping, where team members are individually responsible for their code.

I would prefer to continue working on system, network, or containerization work with Rust, but the previous sentence is my hard requirement.

----

AI is exciting, but the company I am working for is flying too close to the sun for me. This isn't a criticism of them (and they are removed from my resume, etc. so wont be publicly identifiable) but it isn't the kind of work I want to be doing.

shofetim··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
It is a small community. The forums are moderately active though: https://fossil-scm.org/forum/forum
shofetim··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
If you are frustrated with Github being down again, and just want an alternative, the other options listed are better fits. If you have the time to look at doing more than that, then check out fossil https://fossil-scm.org/home/doc/trunk/www/index.wiki

- It isn't git - Works best with smaller teams - You need to be ok self hosting (single binary, easy to do)

The first point is really the killer. It is revision control, it is as good as git (maybe better), but it is different. Git = branches are easy, was built to support Linux's lieutenant development model, and a massive, loosely connected team. Fossil = branches are intentionally hard, built to support a small, tight knit team (SQLite).

Most teams I've been on are closer in size to SQLite than they are to Linux, but everyone already knows git at a gut deep level. YMMV.

I have a deal for you:

1. Your monthly cloud hosting bill goes down. 2. You get an experienced DevOps engineer to manage your infrastructure, optimize things, and be on call, all included in that smaller bill.

That is it. Interested? mail to: contact@jordanschatz.com

Long time experienced DevOps engineer. I hate systems that are slow, expensive and hard to change. If you do to, let me know ;)

shofetim··on Ask HN: Does it still make sense to write code by hand?
It makes sense to write code by hand.

We are in a hype bubble and it can be hard to go against the grain. The bubble will calm down, as it has every other time: crypto, low code, outsourcing, SPAs, Java, AI that last time around (search for Lighthill report).

I agree with your concern about skill stagnation or erosion. Years ago we used to make fun of "architectural astronauts": developers who stopped implementing and instead used English to design systems for others to implement.

I'm guessing you have had the experience writing code where you throw away the first, second and maybe third implementations? While you "work out" what the real problem is? Our human brains need that niggling at the problem before we can make a good design. Don't short circuit it.

shofetim··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
I am building a cloud hosting company that exposes the cloud as a single docker host. No VMs to manage, just containers and easy controls to set the number of CPUs, RAM, disk that you want your containers to have access to.

https://oxpower.io/

Joyent did something like this ~11 years go, and I loved using it, but then they where acquired by Samsung and shut down their public (non-enterprise) offering.

This is try 3 at building something as good, and it is working!

Yeah for hand crafted Rust!

Hello I'm Jordan, I have 15+ years of experience with full stack software development, and leading technical teams. I've been CTO a few times, worked in/for startups, consulted for fortune 500s, and worked on public sector modernization projects.

What I am good at:

- DevOps

- Building teams that get things done. I love getting to the point where product owners (voluntarily) say "how about you guys in engineering do whatever you think is best, because we need some time to think about these features requests before we know what more to build"

What I'm interested in:

- DevOps/DevEx improvements,

- Improvements to containerization, eBPF, MicroVMs, Linux internals

- I like smaller (< 50 person) companies of all kinds

I am flexible in regards full time, part time, contract, occasional consulting.

shofetim··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
Phoenix — https://github.com/shofetim/phoenix

A multi-server process supervisor. Existing init processes (systemd, runit, s6, etc) work great on a single server but when you need to manage/deploy many servers, the tooling gets really complicated (K8s). Phoenix extends the process supervision model from one server, to many. Run this thing once / keep one copy of this around / keep this running on all machines that match pattern X etc.

Turns out the (obvious in hindsight?) problem is automated but simple networking. Currently digging deep into wireguard based overlay networking before rolling the next version of Phoenix out.

shofetim··on Ask HN: Does anyone use a Raspberry Pi as your main computer?
How was your experience with the PineBook Pro?

I've been experimenting with ARM systems for the last year or so — changing how I compute to fit into the tighter limits of the SBCs etc. The governor settings and disk IO seem to be the most important points.

I've been eyeing the PBP (once they come back into production). What is the battery life like with the governor set to performance?

shofetim··on Ask HN: Have you used SQLite as a primary database?
I use SQLite in production and it works great.

You should understand whichever RDBMS you use, and how to get the best performance out of it. Previously I used Postgres extensively, and it worked fine, and before that I managed MySQL servers. They are all fine, but SQLite is as simple as it gets, and more than adequate for most workloads.
