shirkey··on Ask HN: Tools of the trade, 2013 edition
Passpack (http://www.passpack.com) for centralized password sharing among remote team members. Previously using Keepass, which is great but difficult to sync. Yes, passwords in the cloud -- I never thought I'd do it either.
shirkey··on Ask HN: best constraint solvers?
Have a look at: https://code.google.com/p/or-tools/
shirkey··on Write Gambling Software, Go to Prison
"Stuart says authorities specifically told him that they would not use the backdoor themselves but that he would be expected to access the servers of online casinos and others who used his software overseas in order to retrieve the information of gamblers and bookmakers on their behalf."

Big Brother can't even be bothered to do the legwork any longer.

shirkey··on Bash function to copy IP to clipboard
Great idea -- here's a slightly modified version that works on Ubuntu: https://gist.github.com/4238621
shirkey··on Ask HN: Best island to live and work from?
Seconding @scottmcleod as well as @taligent below -- key issues with Bali are traffic and tourists. You could also consider neighboring Lombok / Gili islands which are growing more expensive and more trendy, or if you find you can do without any western amenities, there any number of hidden coastal gems through the archipelago such as Manado / Bunaken. IMHO, quality of Internet varies inversely with quality of life -- live happy :)
shirkey··on A New Kind Of QR Code Generator
Since there is really no demonstration or walkthrough on their home page to explain their analytics tools, I followed their hinted example of www.qrafi.com by typ www.google.com, which generated the following unhelpful error message:

snip:

Sorry, but that was a bad idea. I hate to break it to you this way, and we're sure it's not your fault, but the last thing we need is another moronic QR code pasted on some poorly designed poster. It's like a damn epidemic. I've heard words are pretty good for communicating, so perhaps try those instead of alien barcodes. Thanks, Chopeh @chopeh

/snip

So I went and tried a few random domains, both with and without http://, and each generating the same error message.

shirkey··on Microsoft Is the Most Exciting Company in Tech, Hands Down
You ask a compelling question with "who needs to leave Microsoft for you stop cringing?". I'd suggest it is an institutional problem, and while not completely unique to Microsoft (see Apple, Oracle), it is embodied within nearly every aspect of their business model -- save the recent open source bear-hug, the overarching corporate goal is to do precisely the opposite of what you would wish to see: to have all other market options whittled down to One Microsoft Way. They are not currently open -- and as long as Windows and Office continue their bewildering dominance within corporate IT departments, they will never be open, as it is antagonistic to that goal.
shirkey··on Yahoo’s Mojito is Now Open Source
Using the @ symbol as the hook for a function call would seem to be not only dangerous (corner cases of email or twitter address) but also superfluous -- if Mojito is acting as the web server, shouldn't every request be mapped to some sort of functional request, even in the case of serving static content? If it isn't acting as a web server, would the proxying server in front of it be routing the appropriate functional requests to Mojito?
