shinazueli··on Rust: A Unique Perspective (2019)
It has Atomics that use the same memory constraint model (Relaxed, SeqCst, etc), if that’s what you meant.

You can indeed create data races with them, but only in combination with unsafe code.

shinazueli··on OpenDrop: An open Apple AirDrop implementation written in Python
I actually have the exact opposite experience. I have tried multiple different brands, all of which work JUST FINE with any other device, Android, internet connected devices, even my iPhones will work in every single room of my house.

Literally nothing I can do can make every HomePod on my network “just work”.

I would pay literally twice the amount of money for a HomePod with a fucking Ethernet port. Siri itself works amazingly well with it: when it can communicate.

The dream is to be able to wirelessly and effortlessly play music throughout my home, but I’m about to just give the fucking HomePods away and just wire speakers to every room in the house, even if it does cost more, it’ll actually fucking WORK.

shinazueli··on Indiana life insurance CEO says deaths are up 40% among people ages 18-64
Excess deaths by 45% would seem to indicate that the cause of death is simply incorrect. (Or it’s one of myriad tangentially related deaths: procedures not done, doctors not seen, hospital beds not available, on top of COVID related stressors exacerbating drug use and mental health problems.)
shinazueli··on An Algorithm for Passing Programming Interviews (2020)
It’s ridiculously obvious when people have seen the question before.

The way we do it is like this: we have like 3 or 4 different small variations on each question. Such that the solution is measurably different, in quite telling ways, but that the given problem looks almost identical.

In one specific case the given is identical, but there are 3 variations to the question based on how the candidate asks questions about it (if they don’t ask questions the question is not possible to solve as we don’t give all of the information you need.)

We started doing it this way precisely because we kept running into people who would have 3 nearly perfect interviews and one “hard fail”, and we eventually realized it was because they were so good at faking that they’d seen it before but if they hadn’t seen it before they bombed it hard.

So now that we have the “variations”, at least once a month someone will “hard fail” the interview because they’re obviously cheating and will quite literally give the right answer to the wrong question, just rote memorizing it.

It’s an arms race. And one that I enjoy.

shinazueli··on Modern C++ Won't Save Us (2019)
I was with you until the last sentence. I write Rust code at scale, with schedule and performance constraints. I’ve literally never had to use the word unsafe in my code.

If you can’t figure out how to do it without fucking up the borrow checker, that’s because you can’t figure it out, and you need to learn how to do your job. You’re never “forced” to hack anything.

Blaming “a whip of agile” is just bad taste. Don’t be bad. Like, wtf, you had a decent comment and then shat the bed right at the end.

shinazueli··on Asking rents in San Francisco continue to slip, but…
I don’t think you understood his point. Obviously, those homes have appreciated. His point is that people who own property right now in SF stand to make more money by simply selling their property, and using the proceeds to purchase property in other cities around the country, with better ratios.

Appreciation, by itself, will naturally drive this ratio down because of rent control laws. The value of the home is the denominator in that fraction.
