shimonamit··on Dear Google: please let me ban sites from results
On the contrary. As suggested by another commenter, it could be used to improve their algorithm. Greater number of exclusions would reduce their relevance.
shimonamit··on Dear Google: please let me ban sites from results
Maybe this could be implemented in the way of sticky search operators?

So for example, I could define -site:efreedom.com as an operator to be applied silently for every search I make.

shimonamit··on Wicket ported to Scala
Just to clarify, Wicket is not moving to Scala. This is a version of Wicket implemented in Scala, created by an independent developer.

Also, the (friendly) author claims 100,077 loc in Scala in his rewrite (vs. current 137,791 loc in Java), but he is not exhibiting any code (yet). He's looking for feedback on how to go about releasing. At the end of his post he writes "How should Scala-Wicket be extended and released?"

shimonamit··on Firefox overtakes IE in Europe
An "IE6 compatibility mode" for Chrome anyone? That would be the last hurdle for corporate adoption. Now that's what I call "low barrier of entry"!
shimonamit··on Firefox overtakes IE in Europe
Corporate-land is still IE in the high percentages, including IE6. Hoping, wishing Chrome's new "ready for business" features will dent that...
shimonamit··on Google tracks you. We don't. An illustrated guide
I'll remember that. Thanks!
shimonamit··on Google tracks you. We don't. An illustrated guide
I'm still dreaming of a search engine that parses regular expressions. When that happens I'm there. Yesterday.
shimonamit··on Matz: I use Debian, I have no Ruby problems.
The backdrop on this topic is the recent news of Debian's Ruby package maintainer quitting, mostly due to issues he has with the Ruby core community and the maintenance/release process.

This post by Matz was supposedly submitted to debunk the myth that "Ruby's not for Debian", but it is entirely orthogonal to the issue at hand. Matz undoubtedly compiles his Ruby, as most maintainers would do with their projects, rather than install using Debian's package manager.

shimonamit··on Matz: I use Debian, I have no Ruby problems.
Matz compiles. He doesn't use Debian's packaging.
shimonamit··on New cave found in Vietnam: "A skyscraper could fit"
Yes, it was a sour-face moment when I saw that. In fact I came back to HN to see if anyone else saw it. The hidden majesty and serenity of nature, suddenly revealed, is defiled by our invasive devices.
shimonamit··on Poll: When did you start programming?
I was 14 when I began tinkering with the BASIC code of the DOS 'Gorillas' and 'Nibbles' games. I loved changing the color schemes and making the bananas fly ridiculously fast.
shimonamit··on If people tried to pay for other services like they try to pay for programming
> er... think I'l stop before this looks like a post on Lifehacker or something :)

Yea, let's lay low. We don't want gnosis thinking we're another gawker site or something.

shimonamit··on Iphone Application Development - Course from Stanford
Stanford puts their courses on YouTube. Here is the first session:

shimonamit··on How Israel handles airport security
I was once late to the airport (in Israel) where I was scheduled to pick up my mother. I parked the car and ran towards the gate.

A guard was standing at the entrance with her hands crossed doing nothing by observing. When she saw me coming she made a few quick steps towards me and signaled me to stop and stand aside for questioning. I felt a bit uncomfortable, first because it was abrupt and I was being singled out, but also because she was behaving like a shepherd dog trying to seize my eyes (which I later understood why). She was very polite and dismissed me after presenting my ID and answering a few short questions.

This got me thinking about the silent perimeters, and how smart it is they were only engaged when triggered. The take home lesson for me was: smart earns respect. They were a step ahead of me and I was responding, not them.

shimonamit··on Use Vim Like A Pro
I remapped 'hjkl' to 'jkl;' and never looked back.
shimonamit··on Apple deprecates Java
Might I say, "the up and coming MacRuby platform Apple has designs for"? At least a couple of the committers are Apple employees. But I misattributed the project as being "theirs", which apparently isn't true.
shimonamit··on Apple deprecates Java
Speculative, but could this be an early preventative measure to keep JRuby from challenging their up and coming MacRuby platform?
shimonamit··on Apple deprecates Java
Sounds significant, but how important is Apple/MacOS to Java?
shimonamit··on Tech/Startup focused product? Don't support IE
It all depends on your market. You can't ignore IE if your customers are on locked down, corporate workstations with guerrilla IT departments dictating IE only. Know your market, then decide accordingly.
shimonamit··on AOL Attempting to Buy Yahoo
Not in the same tone. Certainly not after Arrington's incentivized stay period is up.
shimonamit··on Google Instant Search Released
Thanks. I should have known they were smarter than that.
shimonamit··on Google Instant Search Released
Why would I want Google to begin searching at 'he' if I'm looking for 'hello world'? Will the instant search list relevant results so early on, so as to save me from typing the whole term?
shimonamit··on Ask HN: Incorporating in USA (nonresident)
Just an example: https://online.citibank.com/US/JRS/pands/detail.do?ID=Checki....
shimonamit··on Ask HN: Incorporating in USA (nonresident)
Some bank sites allow you to open an account online. Doesn't that count?
shimonamit··on Ask HN: Review Cash Curve, our free webapp.
After a bit more of a comprehensive review, here are some more comments:

1- Tracking income vs. expenses is difficult. Maybe color code income in green and expense in red. This becomes especially difficult when clicking on the recurring tab.

2- Optional stop date needed for recurring transactions. I can't configure a recurring expense (such as payment in installments) over the next 3 months.

3- Recurring expenses by named months. I have recurring expenses that occur each month, except during the summer (such as childrens' school tuition). I'd like to configure income/expenditure for all months of the year, except July/Aug.

4- Recurring transaction sorting. I'd like to sort by any column in desc & asc order.

5- Transaction Categorization. I'd like to group expenses/income transactions by custom categories: Utilities, Housing, Bank etc. When creating a new transaction, I can choose which category to enter it under.

Great work! I look forward to future developments.

shimonamit··on Ask HN: Review Cash Curve, our free webapp.
Per #3, I noticed the I can edit in the box above. Didn't catch that initially.
shimonamit··on Ask HN: Review Cash Curve, our free webapp.
Very nice! Some points:

1- Can't enter one-time/recurring expense/income for past date. What happens if I'm late?

2- Currencies? Only USD? Not a big deal since I can just pretend your USD are my local currency, bus still... not elegant.

3- After entering recurring income, I couldn't edit it. There was no response when clicking on 'edit' here: https://cashcurveapp.com/recurrings. I use Chrome 5.0.375 on Windows XP.

shimonamit··on Let me Duck Duck Go that for you
I was just having fun... hope nobody took it seriously. It is a goofy site and a goofy comment.
shimonamit··on Let me Duck Duck Go that for you
I wonder how they plan to monetize this...
shimonamit··on MacRuby 0.6 Official Release
Great. Looking forward to that.
