shiftpgdn··on My journey away from the JAMstack
Oracle's free ARM VM offering can easily serve the same degree (actually significantly more) than a Netlify deployment.
shiftpgdn··on My journey away from the JAMstack
I un-ironically agree.
shiftpgdn··on My journey away from the JAMstack
The difference is I'm not out touting using a VPS as "The next generation of web development" and having payola articles written that if you don't use a VPS then your career is going to get left behind.
shiftpgdn··on My journey away from the JAMstack
https://w3techs.com/technologies/details/pl-php 77.4% as of today.
shiftpgdn··on My journey away from the JAMstack
https://www.netlify.com/pricing/#pricing-table-full-feature-...

Almost every feature you charge for is something you can achieve for free inside of a basic VPS. I understand you have the classic SV "Hotel California" model where you can check in but you can never leave. But frankly this makes the internet worse in every way possible and part of the point of the original article.

shiftpgdn··on My journey away from the JAMstack
JAMStack isn't modern web development. 80% of the internet still runs on PHP on traditional servers. Netlify is needless complexity (nevermind the vendor lock-in) 99% of developers will never need.

You also don't address the OP's points where Netlify has suffered the same fate of "enshitification" where features slowly get stripped out and moved into pay to use buckets, likely at the behest of needing to payback 100+ million dollars in VC funding.

shiftpgdn··on AWS: IPv4 addresses cost too much, so you’re going to pay
IPv4 addresses have always had a cost (sort of, though they've gone from pennies per IP to $60+ per). I get the feeling Amazon was happy to eat the cost to reduce friction in deploying EC2 instances but now they've hit maximum saturation and now they can just add another charge to the pile that 99.99% of users will never notice.
shiftpgdn··on Ask HN: Is the market bad, or am I having the worst luck job hunting?
Tech leaders colluding with the government by abusing the H1B program and ultra-lax enforcement of anti-trust laws to absolutely crater tech salaries has been the name of the game for 15+ years.
shiftpgdn··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
I’m surprised you’re getting such good economy. I was getting 13mpg in my 2013 in stop and go traffic. Which is all I drove in at the time, and a contributing factor in selling it.
shiftpgdn··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
Consider yourself lucky. Off the top of my head both Ford and Subaru were subject to lawsuits about vehicles not meeting EPA range expectations. When I had an outback I was very lucky to get 17MPG and the EPA range on the window sticker was 27 which felt really deceptive.
shiftpgdn··on Fired Tesla Employee Posts New Video of Full Self-Driving Running Red Light
There are a dozen news articles that say it was missing, and even your picture looks like it's just the mount point, not the crash arresting system itself.

shiftpgdn··on Data brokers selling license plate location and analytics data
Lots of jurisdictions already have carve outs where you can’t publish information (such as location data) for high level public officials.
shiftpgdn··on Fired Tesla Employee Posts New Video of Full Self-Driving Running Red Light
The crash arrester was missing when the Tesla crashed there, which is also part of the reason it was a fatal accident.
shiftpgdn··on Fired Tesla Employee Posts New Video of Full Self-Driving Running Red Light
Everyone always gets upset at me when I bring this up. The infamous fatal "autopiloted" Model X crash in the Bay Area happened because the road lanes were painted to drive the car into the narrow side of a jersey barrier. The next day a near fatal accident happened in the exact same spot, likely because Caltrans as an organization has little to no liability and generally doesn't stay on top of freeway conditions.

There is an intersection in Houston that is one of the most dangerous in the USA that kills a dozen people a year due to poor design and planning from TxDOT. There are probably hundreds of intersections like this around the country that will need to be fixed.

If I go paint road lines into a wall painted like a tunnel, are the drivers who hit the tunnel wall responsible, or is it me who painted the road lines?

shiftpgdn··on X, the moonshot factory
I wonder if we can add it to the Google death pile?
shiftpgdn··on Become Ungoogleable
Not just Google, Cloudflare is working hard on it too.
shiftpgdn··on Amazon’s electric Rivian vans have delivered 150M packages
The motor stops at TDC under compression and then fires the spark plugs to restart, reducing wear on the starter.
shiftpgdn··on National Geographic lays off its last remaining staff writers
Nat Geo could absolutely run a generational brand again but it sounds like it’s overloaded with old media dinosaurs. They have 280 million followers on Instagram.

Any media savy millennial or gen-z could build a hundred million dollar a year brand with that following alone but instead they’re posting articles about “skincare routines” and “birth control for cats” with almost zero engagement.

shiftpgdn··on US Congress doubles down on claims of illegal UFO retrieval programs
I did, thank you for the correction.
shiftpgdn··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
Jensen Huang emigrated at the age of 4, Lisa Su at the age of 3, Satya and Sundar both came over as part of college visa programs. I don't see what that has to do with mass importation of low skill workers to hammer down high middle class wages in the US?
shiftpgdn··on US Congress doubles down on claims of illegal UFO retrieval programs
One of the most notable UAP/UFO encounters ever took place in South Africa at an elementary school.
shiftpgdn··on US Congress doubles down on claims of illegal UFO retrieval programs
The president's son allegedly committed quite a few crimes, including offering access to his father (The US President) for money. He has been charged for some of these crimes recently.
shiftpgdn··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
These days H1B is strictly a wage suppression tool and filled with low skill workers from India based degree mills and body shops. Actual skilled workers are coming in on L-1 or O-1 visas.

shiftpgdn··on FedEx Accused of Largest Odometer Rollback Fraud in History with Used Vans
Depending on the manufacturer the digital odometers are even easier to tamper with. There are a dozen people on my local craigslist that will reset/rollback odometers for you for $100.
