shiftoutbox··on The Vindication of Ask Jeeves
Uhh we are talking about ask.com / iac and the same idiots who made the ask tollbar; Hey they also claimed they did yoga in their data center too . Let’s talk about that
shiftoutbox··on Time to get the Posix elephant off our necks?
Gnn once told me , about how he had to work on plan9 . It’s an interesting topic . It’s good to see how other people think about this cs topic and see if you can borrow some ideas .
shiftoutbox··on Collection of 100+ profitable side-project ideas to inspire you
This looks like a straight up pyramid scheme. It’s a website/ newsletter about small startups for sale . I feel like this would stupidly easy to pump full of garbage for sale .
shiftoutbox··on Rackspace Exchange hosting down ~18 hours; “solution” is to start over on O365
For the former DataPipe employee’s at RackSpace: “KetanKetan” .
shiftoutbox··on Migrate from Linux to FreeBSD
That’s what I was thinking when I read your post . “Clearly written by someone with no real world experience trying to gaslight users “
shiftoutbox··on E Pluribus, Network – Arista Networks, That Is
Pluribus. Their switches crashed all the time . The best thing they did was port FreeBSD bhyve to illumos .
shiftoutbox··on E Pluribus, Network – Arista Networks, That Is
That bullshit company should have died when they realized Illumos was a shit show.
shiftoutbox··on World’s largest vertical strawberry farm opens in Jersey City
Hi long time jersey city resident here . There never was an abandoned or old “ Anheuser-Busch factory in Jersey City” . AB has operated a massive brewery/factory in Newark 10mins away . In terms of abandoned factories most of not all of the jersey city abandoned property like this would have been retrofitted into something else years ago . Newark on the other hand has loads of abandoned stuff . Also it was home to Balentine’s , Pabst and at one point a sclitz plant .
shiftoutbox··on The New Homophobia
There is an “it’s always sunny in Philadelphia “ episode that captures this exactly . Actually it’s the last season when they go to Ireland ; When Mac decides he is gay and how he needs to explain to the gang his identity , and how the gang doesn’t actually care either way what he is , gay, straight , Irish , Dutch .
shiftoutbox··on Gallium OS: a fast and lightweight Linux distro for ChromeOS devices
Yes , there are a lot of quirks in the chrome book platform . I have a 2015 hp 11e and nothing works on it but chromeos, win7 and gallium. No Ubuntu , FreeBSD , NetBSD or red hat .
shiftoutbox··on Amazon Plans to Split HQ2 in Two Locations: NY and VA
Hahah ; actually living here and no ; it’s not cheep .
shiftoutbox··on A smarter SmartOS? (2016)
Also there was some work done back in 2015 to use the NetBSD hier and illumos user land to start down this path . It was even shown to work back in 2006 using Solaris 10 and a super minimal install . I think both sites are long gone and someone would need to dig around archive.org to find it .
shiftoutbox··on Problems coming for online publishing
Having worked at nyt I worked on nyt_cookie.so an Apache module for parsing and forwarding some of the early tracking systems . So back on the topic over hacks . The source for it was in a cvs repo hosted on this guys second office laptop , running FreeBSD 3.2-STABLE . So one it was 2009 and 3.2 was incredibly old ; as was the laptop . One day the laptops disk dies and no one had backups of the repo . Nyt_cookie.so was kept on the prod web servers for another 4 or 5 years before it was abandoned. We used to binpatch the binary to fix it up .
shiftoutbox··on Limbo – A Reasoning System for First-Order Limited Belief
Limbo is a programming language for writing distributed systems and is the language used to write applications for the Inferno operating system. It was designed at Bell Labs by Sean Dorward, Phil Winterbottom, and Rob Pike. Google the name of your project before naming it .
shiftoutbox··on Improving TrueOS: OpenRC
Welcome openrc . The good question is what happened to launchd , runit and , and Nosh . All were in the running to replace rc'ng .
shiftoutbox··on Systemd developer asks tmux to add systemd specific code
I a unrelated story tmux developers ask systemd developers if systemd can "make me a sandwich" .
shiftoutbox··on Misperceiving Bullshit as Profound
This is deep
shiftoutbox··on Bill Gross: What to Do After the Robots Take Our Jobs
Party like its 1999!
shiftoutbox··on The driverless truck is coming, and it’s going to automate millions of jobs
This is bad for the 99.998% .
shiftoutbox··on Self-driving truck convoy completes its first major journey across Europe
For example if rail handles long range transport to distribution hubs and actual truck drivers transport last mile . What's wrong or bad about this idea ? again I don't see the point in wrecking the lives of truck drivers.
shiftoutbox··on Self-driving truck convoy completes its first major journey across Europe
Totally pointless. I like truck drivers driving trucks . Not out of work angry and with nothing to do . Ohh and on a sid driverless trucks sound a lot like a train . Why not just use freight trains ?
shiftoutbox··on Hidden latency in the Linux network stack
I think Matt Dillon would love to see that . Also I would love to see the analysis of their situation on a UNIX , BSD's and even Windows .
shiftoutbox··on LKML: New syscall: leftpad()
Swish
shiftoutbox··on LKML: New syscall: leftpad()
What was that random comment about how Linux dosn't break userland Abi . Was this a early April l fools joke ?
shiftoutbox··on Ubuntu on Windows
Wow Microsoft, what's next jails with a manager called Plumber . Zing !
shiftoutbox··on The limits of open source with Illumos and OmniOS
I could be wrong but isn't this the normal memory management in Solaris an its derivatives? Even if it's not arc and it was used and now marked as inactive . The kernel keep its in a different "accounting bucket" , but it's still usable . What I suspect the op is ticked off with is actually arc back pressure and l1 arc eviction which can be horridly slow .
shiftoutbox··on DalmatinerDB: A fast, distributed metric store
Go write a ruby client.
shiftoutbox··on Announcing SQL Server on Linux
Checks calendar , hurmm it's not April 1st ... ?

shiftoutbox··on New HipChat for Mac: Cleaner, Faster, and Snazzier
Just what we need a Snazzier hipchat.
shiftoutbox··on The DROWN Attack
Well how long before the novelty names run out of meaning ? For starters there are probably more issues out there then there are catchy American English anachronisms. I vote for using the names of Mezzo-American gods . Like Hachäk'yum or Xbalanque!
