shifto··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
I have a hugely integrated smart home. 2 rules; 1. Everything can still be manually operated in the way people expect it to. 2. Local only.
shifto··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
My kids love something like this we see every year at the traveling fair. It's the same idea but with rubber duckies floating around and having to catch them with a small pole with a hook attached. It's €20 for 2 kids to have 2 minutes of fun and the payoff is a €1 Aliexpress/Temu pollution generator disguised as a toy. They play with it for a day before it ends up in the trash.

The first few years I hated this for exactly the reasons you mention, but now I'm just happy they are happy. I think I have a few more years left before they don't want to go rubber ducky fishing with their dad no more and I doubt by then €20 gets me 2 minutes of joy with them.

shifto··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
It wouldn't accept it was the Glimmer model and I had to stop when I realized I was arguing with my GPU. Was a surreal moment, lol.
shifto··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
I worry about this myself but find some solace and peace in my backup strategy. I treat the harness as a user and set permissive authorizations where needed. I even let it suggest why and which permissions it would need for specific items and note these down in the wiki as well. The idea is that the LLMs takes into consideration why it has the permissions it has and doesn't try and work around them.
shifto··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
Local Qwen3.8 27B pointed to my local Silverbullet wiki coupled with a harness makes it so smart in my environment. It knows my network and homelab better than me. It can find things in an instant, troubleshoot problems on its own. Magic.
shifto··on Our position on open-weights models
A Psalm for the Wild-Built
shifto··on There are a few things that I look back on as my mistakes in the early days
Deus Ex is such a sad story though. I really loved the first one but then was dissapointed by Invisible War. Fast forward a decade and there is Deus Ex Human Revolution which hit all the right notes for me. Fell in love with the series all over again. Mankind Divided was everything I wanted from the sequel until it just stopped. Read all the novels, even played The Fall and love everything about the universe. Shame how it died without a resolution to the Jensen story.
shifto··on Dutch Railways offers unlimited off-peak train travel nationwide for €49/month
We Dutch just hate both. If I'm on bike I hate all car drivers. If I'm in car I hate all bicycle drivers.
shifto··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
This is how it starts my friend. Before you know it you have a lot of projects 90% done and living in production without ever getting the last 10% before you think of something new! Currently I'm refactoring a lot of homebrew ESPhome devices to use the ESP32-H2 as it supports Thread. This allows me to remove weak IoT SSIDs while expanding my Thread network node count for better mesh.
shifto··on What the fuck happened to nerds
And I didn't even mind. Rather watch 15s of black screen than an obnoxious ad.
shifto··on Super ZSNES – GPU Powered SNES Emulator
Wow, I remember specifically buying a sound card and CD-rom drive for my 486 so I could run the GB emulator. It wouldn't boot without a sound card and I really wanted to play the non-translated version of Pokemon Gold. People wouldn't believe me when I told them I had a newer Pokemon game than Red/Blue/Yellow.
shifto··on Mo RAM, Mo Problems (2025)
Rip Rudy.
shifto··on If you don't opt out by Apr 24 GitHub will train on your private repos
In my case, co-pilot will be training on co-pilot code. I'm probably not alone so I don't think they're getting what they hope they're getting.
shifto··on Fermented foods shaped human biology
But the bad bacteria know how to tell me what to eat. The good ones never do!
shifto··on Anthropic takes legal action against OpenCode
Maybe Oracle should just buy Anthropic.
shifto··on Tell HN: I'm 60 years old. Claude Code has re-ignited a passion
Having never touched Perl in my life, Claude has enabled me to create a plugin for this ancient Perl software a lot of people are still using to this day. This felt different from just creating some new code with some LLM. This felt like ancient gods we're whispering their knowledge into me.
shifto··on I used AI-powered calorie counting apps, and they were even worse than expected
What is the added value of the app? Ive been using ChatGPT to track my calories for 6 months now and dropped 20kg because of it. This is mostly me just telling it everything that enters my mouth and adjust the output I deem wrong. This isn't super accurate but apparently enough to get an idea, and thus lose weight.
shifto··on US hospital told family their daughter had checked out when in fact she'd died
That's some conspiracy stuff, got proof? I mean... You're not even a real doctor, you make pizza's.
shifto··on Llama.ttf: A font which is also an LLM
His videos are like cool fever dreams.
shifto··on ESPHome
Not to be pedantic but it's ESPhome not ESPinthemiddleofnowhere. There are other solutions for far away sensors.
shifto··on Microsoft is driving users away
For the longest time, I was a die-hard MS guy, fully immersed in their ecosystem. From my Surface Pro to the Lumia Windows Phone, I embraced every facet of their landscape. It was like the stars had aligned perfectly, granting me a seamless and efficient workflow across all my devices. But then, as if the planets themselves shifted out of harmony, everything fell apart and now we are here.

We get these slivers of full-integration from time to time. We see it today with the Vision Pro. It's not hard to imagine what could be! But I'm not counting on it anytime soon.

shifto··on Fossil is quitting smartwatches
I own a Lamborghini that I received as a gift for my 20th anniversary. It's my second high-performance car. The first one was a Honda Civic that I drove for a while and then parked in the garage, eventually forgetting about it. (It was an amazing vehicle and well-crafted, but the driving experience just didn't align with my preferences.)

The Lamborghini effortlessly (performance-wise, it's quite powerful) does what I want it to do, and I'm perfectly fine taking it on a week-long trip without worrying about refueling. I'm also comfortable driving it in any situation.

In eco mode, it has an impressive fuel efficiency, which is fantastic since 95% of the time, I'm using it for regular commuting.

shifto··on Psytrance Guide
"Infected Mushroom - Becoming Insane" got me from mostly metal into psytrance.
shifto··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2023)
"Macbook, Neuro-scientific games, Take home exercise" Nou succes daarmee dan, lol.
shifto··on Self hosting in 2023
Self-hosting shouldn't be a chore. Self-hosting should be fun! Sometimes I just do maintenance because I can and I like it, not even because it's needed. I could be making the dumbest incremental changes that don't even net a profit in the end just because I like doing it so much.

To me they are definitely pets and I love them for it.

shifto··on Shell script best practices, from a decade of scripting things
Just so you know. You can abbreviate almost anything in powershell or make your won aliases. I love Powershell, hands down best investment in my personal career was to really learn and understand Powershell.
shifto··on An ode to that “coffee friend”
During birthdays and days like Christmas, I ask friends and family to not buy me anything but if they can think of something fun for my kids. I have all the stuff I want already so either you have an awesome idea and really have a specific gift you want to give me or I'd rather you don't get me anything at all. This is well respected in my circles and I don't get as much junk anymore.
shifto··on Ask HN: Can you share websites that are pushing the utility of browsers forward?
Shoutout to WLED[0]. When I was able to flash my ESP with the latest version just from the browser I was kind of blown away. I was blindsided by it even though I have a lot of ESP projects myself and consider myself 'into the space'.

shifto··on Steam: Half-Life 2 Hardware Survey (2004)
Was my first dual GPU setup! An AGP TNT2 and another PCI TNT2 for my third monitor.
shifto··on Nintendo Switch game cartridges taste offensively bad (2017)
It's science if he did the experiment and documented it (he did, see post). It's proven science when others verify the results.
