shiado··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
This is that scene in all the casino movies where the person who found a system to win gets taken into the office by security and given a stern warning/beatdown.
shiado··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
74 million voters. This is not going to play out well. There's really no coming back from this moment, the technocratic elite have changed American democracy forever. Edit: I mean this in the way Snowden tweeted yesterday, it will be interesting how this plays out for better or worse, but it is a monumental policy shift that will be a date marked in history books.
shiado··on Sci-Hub Founder Criticizes Sudden Twitter Ban over “Counterfeit” Content
Yes and? Sci-Hub is a resource whose value transcends American IP orthodoxy and their contributions to Twitter are a gain for humanity. If Twitter can platform totalitarian governments that commit crimes against humanity why not a mere IP violator?
shiado··on Facebook: 64% of the time users join extremist groups, the platform told them to
It's clear social media companies are in over their heads. I'm glad I don't use them and they need serious oversight. Just today Twitter allowed the promotion of genocide on what they would consider to be their tightly moderated platform https://twitter.com/chineseembinus/status/134724760209453465...
shiado··on GitHub Director of engineering openly encourages racism
How can somebody post that and keep their job? Is that how far gone American culture is?
shiado··on FATCA Pushes “Accidental” Americans to Give Up US Citizenship
It's a lot more than $2k for many, as with the exit tax it means paying capital gains tax as if you sold every single investment you hold.
shiado··on Microsoft says it found malicious software in its systems
What I mean is some technical explanation that it is Russia and how they arrived at the conclusion. Countdown to Zero Day had excellent explanations for attributing malware, I'm just wondering if there is anything out there about technical clues for this yet.
shiado··on Microsoft says it found malicious software in its systems
Does anybody have any details on the Russia attribution? Not looking to start political flame bait here just curious what details are out there.
shiado··on Coinbase Pro Disables Margin Trading
Yes, but don't waste your time with American exchanges, the regulations are too burdensome. Bitmex actually maintains a high score section, a lot of people are doing extremely crazy things trading in the crypto space https://www.bitmex.com/app/leaderboard
shiado··on Google Widevine Content Decryption Module DMCA
I thought copyrights on numbers were deemed invalid? Copyright applies to data as it appears right? You can encode a number in any base, the idea that a company has copyright on every base encoding is equivalent to me saying I have copyright on every key because I wrote a program that enumerates all keys.
shiado··on Docker fails to launch on Apple Silicon
I'm actually tempted to get one of the new Macbook Airs. There's something intriguing and fun about navigating the brokenness of a new ecosystem. Does anybody know how Steam handles the new macs?
shiado··on Canadian government pledges to connect 98% of Canadians via High-Speed Internet
Canada infamously has some of the most corrupt and expensive telecom in the entire world. I seriously doubt this article is accurate. It looks like Trudeau is preparing for an election with empty promises.
shiado··on U.S. Feds Seized Nearly $1B in Bitcoin from Wallet Linked to Silk Road
And with a total lack of fungibility things could get even crazier with crypto. Imagine losing your house because you cashed out some BTC you got off of some guy you don't know for cash that Chainalysis says is linked to the Silk Road five transactions back so it is the proceeds of crime.
shiado··on U.S. Feds Seized Nearly $1B in Bitcoin from Wallet Linked to Silk Road
Under US forfeiture laws proceeds is defined as the following:

(A) In cases involving illegal goods, illegal services, unlawful activities, and telemarketing and health care fraud schemes, the term “proceeds” means property of any kind obtained directly or indirectly, as the result of the commission of the offense giving rise to forfeiture, and any property traceable thereto, and is not limited to the net gain or profit realized from the offense.

I suppose the BTC itself would be covered under "property of any kind obtained directly or indirectly, as the result of the commission of the offense giving rise to forfeiture"

And the BCH split coins would fall under "and any property traceable thereto, and is not limited to the net gain or profit realized from the offense."

It would appear that such a seizure is legit as 'traceable' is infinitely flexible. But I'm not a lawyer so don't take my word for it.

shiado··on U.S. Feds Seized Nearly $1B in Bitcoin from Wallet Linked to Silk Road
What's fascinating is that it is the view of the state that the creation of a hard fork, which is the creation of new and previously non-existing coins according to how Bitcoin is taxed by the IRS, is considered to be the proceeds of crime. It is philosophically notable that a piece of property can come into existence and immediately be considered the proceeds of crime in this way.
shiado··on U.S. Feds Seized Nearly $1B in Bitcoin from Wallet Linked to Silk Road
So what is the actual story here? Some dormant coins that were associated with the Silk Road for which no ownership was established and nobody was prosecuted for has moved to a new address and the feds are laying claim to the coins? And what actual information is there to suggest they were hacked?
shiado··on Ask HN: Microsoft blocked my outlook.com account for using a VPN. Any ideas?
This is why when I need to proxy traffic I do it through an AWS instance in whatever region I need. Many services not only don't suspect AWS IPs as malicious, they might even have whitelists on their firewalls for AWS IPs.
shiado··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
The "under penalty of perjury" part of DMCA has always been fascinating to me. Has there ever been a single case of this being enforced against inappropriate DMCA takedowns? What's next? DMCA against Intel for making a chip that can facilitate copyright infringement? Maybe a power company for providing power to the machine that could do it?
shiado··on Facebook, Twitter block the NY Post from posting
This kind of mess is why I respected Wikileaks so much for all those years including the 2016 leaks. Leaking is an art that requires dumping verifiable and irrefutable documents to as many people as possible so they can independently investigate them. These plant jobs in partisan media will never be received credibly.
shiado··on A follow up to Coinbase being a mission focused company
Not necessarily. Everybody knows the best way to move up in tech is to switch. Depending upon your options taking this offer and moving to another company where you make more is the best possible path you could take. Throw in the desire right now for people to leave SF and it gets even better.
shiado··on Ask HN: What should a software engineering Hippocratic Oath equivalent be?
The "ethicality" of any given program is a non-trivial semantic property. It follows that any software engineering "Hippocratic Oath" is an undecidable concept.
shiado··on Tracking Mixed Bitcoins
Does anybody know of any papers about attacking coinjoins? From what I understand Wasabi + TOR is still the gold standard of Bitcoin mixing.
shiado··on The IRS Sets a Trap for Cryptocurrency Tax Cheats
Given that crypto is regulated as merely being property, it seems quite arbitrary to ask questions specifically related to it. Where is the Beanie Baby question or the question about my old Magic cards sitting in a box?
shiado··on Trump’s WeChat curbs halted by judge on free speech concerns
Free speech concerns on an app built by a nation where people have no rights that bans people for bringing up the Tiananmen Square massacre and Uyghur genocide, unreal.
shiado··on My Trip Down the Crypto Rabbit Hole in Search of the DAO Hacker
There's no such thing as the 'DAO Hacker'. The smart contract was executed exactly as written. Sad how when the going gets tough many cryptocurrency enthusiasts crawl back to statist inventions and conventions, but people should have seen the hard fork coming as Ethereum is a premined ponzi to begin with and the initial backers weren't going to let their payoff slip away so easily.
shiado··on Htop 3.0
There are few things more satisfying programming than firing up htop on a high core count machine and watching cpu usage light up.
shiado··on The Post Office Is Deactivating Mail Sorting Machines Ahead of the Election
That's exactly my point. This article is critiquing ancient technology which can be tampered with by the ruling government that limits democratic involvement without proposing obvious remedies involving superior technology. The hidden subtext here through the intellectual dishonesty of its exclusion is that this technology would allow a little bit TOO much involvement from the electorate which is contrary to the entire design of American representative democracy which is purpose built to prop up candidates captured by big money corporate donors and PACs.
shiado··on The Post Office Is Deactivating Mail Sorting Machines Ahead of the Election
If only there was a communication medium which travelled at the speed of light and 100 years of research in information theory and cryptography which would allow secure auditable verifiable elections from the comfort of home. Nah lets use pre-telegraph technology.
shiado··on Introducing Instagram Reels
Isn't TikTok just a Vine clone? Social networks have always been derivative and iterative.
shiado··on US travel firm $4.5M ransom negotiation open chat
Money laundering involves the intentional hiding of the origins of funds obtained through criminal activity. Attributing the source of funds as being criminally obtained is difficult if tumbling is done effectively. If tumbling was reason enough to be suspected of money laundering, so would splitting a $100 at a gas station.
