I am not entirely convinced. Was not Hubble damaged and got an upgrade lateron? I mean it could be possible that NASA is starved, but the repair involved other countries too, and I don't think the USA could keep mega-super-duper technology hidden from others in the long run. And NASA often wants more money - just take the whole search for life on planets. This is so pointless - life exists already here. What is the addiction to want to find life outside of the planet? Other than, of course, getting more money, which is understandable, but it doesn't answer the question. (Not that I am against better technology; the rationale just does not convince me at all here.)

The bigger question is why the USA can not control their billionaires in general. Just look at the advertisement budget recently for both parties in the USA. People are bribed via propaganda and convinced that either party solves anything other than working into their own pockets, sometimes post-politics. Trump and his big brother bromance guys just pillage more openly, but the whole system is completely broken in the USA from the get go.

Is VDJ recombination based on viruses or transposons?

It's the first time I hear this. Can't yet say much about it until I can verify that.

There was no theft involved. "Genes" are not "owned".
shevy-java··on Tcl/Tk 9.1
Well - Tcl is dying though. So he was not entirely wrong.

One can not even find it on TIOBE but one can find COBOL there:

https://www.tiobe.com/tiobe-index/

(TIOBE is horrible, but still.)

shevy-java··on Tcl/Tk 9.1
I tried to get into tk via ruby-tk.

I ended up really disliking tk.

Using ruby-gtk2 and ruby-gtk3 was much nicer. (Sadly, gtk4 sucks, so that's the end of the story there.)

I kind of want a universal toolkit that works everywhere and is also good. Right now I use ... well, either the web (that's ok, though I hate how I can not easily open local files and so forth, without having to use node), or swing via jruby-swing - which semi-sucks, but it also works on windows and it actually is not that bad. (I could use javafx etc... but it is so much easier to get started with swing). I also use libui-ng which is ok but lacks many features, sadly.

shevy-java··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
> Reddit doesn't even make any attempt to control quality

But mods can say they censored you because of low quality contribution to reddit. :)

I do agree that the karma system does not work. I was able to farm 77k karma in two years, after I created a new account there (the old account I had before for +14 years was forced to change the password, so I created a new account - and used EXACTLY the same password, to prove a point to reddit that they are incredibly stupid. Sadly, reddit never understood the problem, even though it should be obvious that, if your passwords are lost yet users retain the same password after being forced by reddit to change it, something in reddit's insinuation simply does not add up here.)

shevy-java··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Reddit has a problem with mod-censorship.

However had, recently they also ruined old.reddit.com. I always said that when they take down old.reddit.com (they require a log in, which makes no sense from a user's perspective) I would be gone. Turns out I retired before that due to mods censoring me willy-nilly style. It's interesting how the internet shifted towards more and more censorship. Can we not come up with an internet without censorship? I am not even against 0% censorship, e. g. I am fine if bots are not allowed to pester real humans, but specifically a lot of censorship that was and is going on on reddit, has to do with mods arbitrarily enforcing "rules". I know this is the case because I wrote just about the very same content and style on ALL subreddits - on some I ended up being censored, on others not. So that's individual mods abusing their anti-social powers.

On Hackernews this is not as bad, but the UI is annoying, especially the "you post too much". Well, I don't - but Hackernews simply has a rate limit that makes no sense. At the least the censorship on Hackernews is nowhere near close to the reddit censorship.

shevy-java··on Phyllotaxis: An audio-reactive LED display
I don't like the word phyllotaxis.

I understand it was inspired by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyllotaxis, but arrangement on leaves serves the purpose of growth in a specific niche. The pattern arises because naturally leaves serve to capture light - see the images on wikipedia there. Phyllo means green. The LEDs used here do not really tap into any of that, and the name is also a misnomer. That's not good.

shevy-java··on US Forces Exit Iraq
I somewhat agree - not necessarily with your content here, but that the article is written ... strangely.

For instance:

> US forces leave country where 4,500 of them died in worst US war of 21st century

I am not even certain that this war was worse than the Afghanistan war. Perhaps the Iraq war was objectively worse, but since the sudden withdrawal in Afghanistan, leaving the Taliban in charge, I am not so sure which war was worse. I am not even sure how to qualify it, so Reuters stating this was the worst war is ... indeed a strange label to use. Wasn't Reuters indeed more objective in the past? And with that I mean objective at all times, not white-washing or black-washing.

I now finished reading the article and it indeed seems op-ed. The reader now thinks that the war against Iran must continue. I still fail to understand why the USA invaded the area. Other than some making enormous profits, of course. If 911 was used as a rationale, why was not Saudi Arabia attacked?

shevy-java··on Pirating the Pirates
I liked The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but the post-dub voice of Wallach when he was much older, did not quite fit into the movie anymore; it felt strange compared to his voice when he was younger.

As for Hollywood ruining videos: well, it is time to phase out Hollywood. The movies are cultural heritage and the best quality must be preserved (without artifical AI slop clowning it up and changing things; I see that on youtube every day, it is AWFUL. AI slop constantly lies about things. I can call it lie-slop).

shevy-java··on What makes Lisp difficult to read?
(The(.

People say we can ignore them but I find the difficult to ignore.

But this is not the only problem with lisp syntax. I found that reading Ruby or Python is simply, on average, so much more efficient.

I found scheme somewhat readable - see haxima game world, https://sourceforge.net/projects/nazghul/ it contains scheme files - but I would not want to write any game logic in it.

shevy-java··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
Yeah - and also trying to promote it. I watched this lately.

First, the Anthropic master clown babbles about how mankind will be destroyed by AI. I mean, skynet in the movie Terminator was kind of cool; the current AI models just work by slopness. They want to erode us by dragging us down to zero quality.

Then this continued over the last some days. Today I heard at the UN speech a german minister babble about AI building up nukes in a private garden (a large garden), bla bla bla all the information is there bla bla bla AI mass-nuke generation.

Now, they are clearly FUDding many people who don't understand anything here. People will associate AI with mega-danger. Probably there will be laws that ensure that only a few companies can control the AI slopness soon, because IT IS SO DANGEROUS. We saw the same discussion with "omg omg omg terrorists", then "omg omg omg someone protect the children", e. g. as a rationale for everyone to ID in order to access information on the world wide web (starting with the anti-social websites, such as facebook, but it won't be limited here; the computer will hand over your ID to the government; see systemd preparing for this move: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/40954 - it all comes in small baby steps, until all the final legislation is in place. The same happened before again and again - anyone remembers the DMCA? Corporations lobbied and paid for that - and it happened).

shevy-java··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
I much prefer cats over AI.
shevy-java··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
> At their core, current models are essentially predictors of what (expert) humans would output given a prompt.

That's a bold claim.

I do not buy it. Essentially AI acts as random babelfish generator, just with a lot more cross-talk back to check to see that it is not total garbage. But there is a ton of garbage nonetheless, hence the proper term AI slop. You seem to mostly try to promote AI with such a wording.

> The only option on the table is to force regulation to impose open source ban before it catches up to the frontier, buying them time to mature their next generation models and keep their business model alive.

Every time someone claims "the only option" is when I become skeptical. I see many more options - most importantly close down the AI slop. I mean you can require of these companies to excel in quality. If they don't, they must go bankrupt. Easy solution here.

shevy-java··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
I do not need a model to know that selfish mega-corporations cause a lot of harm.

Can we get our money back here? I mean, just take the increase in RAM prices alone. That should come with a huge penalty they should give us back due to collusion. And that's just one of many more things. Trump's family dynasty also owes us all money - we want that back as well.

shevy-java··on Self-Hosting on the Dark Web
I like the idea of TOR, but whenever I used it, I hit a speed penalty.

This, in turn, handicaps me searching for information. If they could fix this problem then I would be more likely to make use of TOR. We really need to think long-term about a future web that isn't ruined by Google etc... while also not being locked down such as via age-gating.

shevy-java··on When did Google get so weird?
> My question is: what's the point of the AI in the search engine if it itself isn't going to use the search engine first before answering?

Because the point of AI slop is to waste your time. You just lost about 30 seconds of your life trying to get a correct answer. AI was lying to you, so you had to spend time to counter the AI slop lies here.

I solved it by banning all AI slopness; in the browser some extensions do that. The world becomes better without AI slopness.

shevy-java··on When did Google get so weird?
> Instead, Google did what Google does in 2026 and gave me an AI overview. These used to bother me but at this point I'm mostly ok with them, they're sometimes helpful

I never found them helpful. I always have to block them via extensions.

Google is really an annoying company these days. I am hardly the only one who wishes that company were to cease to exist altogether. In the past I did not understand, on reddit, the de-google movement. Now I completely understand it, but I think it is the reverse as problem here - people abandoning Google. I think Google needs to abandon mankind and this planet. Let them go far away where they no longer cause any issues here.

> Google, a search engine which does not have human emotions, assumed that I had been spurned by a man in my life named Dario and decided what I wanted was an empathetic digital friend. What I wanted was some links, but that's not what Google does in 2026. Expanding the AI overview to see the full answer gave me this:

Poor guy ^^^ has not yet realised that AI slop steals his time. I realised this the first time I notice the AI slop generated text spam Google pushes onto people. A few lost souls may find this useful - I find it utter trash. No quality. Just steals my time.

> What in the fucking hell? I think this was the moment I, the frog, noticed the pot had been boiling for a while. In what universe is it Google's job to console me and be an empathetic listener rather than just find what I am looking for on the internet?

Good that he finally realised it. Million people noticed this before already. I noticed this when Google started to ruin its search engine. First time I remember was via AMP-ification. AMP mostly failed, but Google kept on pushing towards less quality and more suckage. AI is just the final nail in the coffin, but Google search started to suck way before that.

One of these days some scientists should determine when Google really started to suck, because in, say, 2006 or so, Google search did not suck as much.

> Regardless of what you think of AI or chatbots, I think it's pretty obvious this is just plain weird.

Not if you think Google is not doing this on purpose. They are trying to kill off the search engine so they can present you an AI slop spam world. The other AI slop companies do this too. Slop suckage everywhere now.

> Is it so hard to imagine that some parts of search were just fine before LLMs?

That is how YOU think - but not Google. They deliberately crippled their search engine. The adCompany that Google is today, has nothing to do with the original Google. The billionaires running the show just want to suck in more money and dish out more slop.

> I'm not sure how to feel about all of this. Maybe I should go talk to my friend Google, it's always so nice to me.

Some people realise things more slowly. I am glad he finally understands why so many people are pissed at Google. Same for youtube by the way - about 80% of the shorts are AI slop generated or AI slop modified. I noticed this when I watched Brent Spiner on that podcast show; in the video itself, he had white hair but not totally white. In the short, both he and Jonathan Frakes had much whiter hair. I then realised that AI spam filter slop lies to me. I hate AI slop. Youtube is now infected with that, in particular the shorts. Poor guys looking at their smartphones being spammed down via lying slopness.

Doesn't this fulfil the criterium of an illegal organisation, aka a mafia?

They knew the damage they would cause - and went on regardless. The USA need to fix their court system. Right now it is just OligarchBros running the show. The small thief stealing a wallet gets put in jail for years. If you are rich enough, you pay some peanuts and that's the end of it.

Which conspiracy exactly?

It is clear that we do not see all communication. Governments become increasingly deceitful and secretive - the US government is the best example, but the same applies to other governments (just look at the garbage produced by the russian government, they almost outperform the current US administration with total crap, like what Lavrov recently babbled about - what pile of nonsense). And companies - they are alo secretive. So which conspiracy exactly is meant here? It's not that I disagree with your prior statement, but I want to know which conspiracy you assume to be here to exist, or to NOT exist. Because what you wrote is very unspecific - you insinuate that there may not be a conspiracy. How do you conclude that?

I concur with Levitz's statement too, with regards to conspiracy or "inventing" one - so, which specific conspiracy was meant?

shevy-java··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
Not surprising - Suckerberg is one of the BigBro oligarchs running the USA right now. I think the bigger issue is that so many people helped empower these dictator-like corporations in the first place. That is actually a big problem, that the society world-wide depends on these private companies so much. Why do we not have working alternatives here that are decoupled from these corporations? (I could add US-centric corporations, but let's be honest - other companies as big may behave in the same way. It is also clear that current legislation is ineffective; Suckerberg should be held accountable and be in jail, without way to buy himself out here.)
shevy-java··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
> The requirements are essentially that you're either upper-middle class

Not true - a youtuber from Germany who lives in Japan since about 10 years, was denied citizenship recently. And he'd make more than enough money.

https://www.youtube.com/@NihonGoo

The thing is really true: Japan is against more immigration. You'll always be a gaijin there if you come from the outside.

> there seems to always be a large number of clearly white people from America and Europe coming in to display their Japanese nationalism

Other countries are also very much against mass immigration. Japan just does it in a very strange way.

shevy-java··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
This is not news anymore in that it has been going on for several months already. The first time I really noticed this was on Paolo from Tokyo, where he suddenly praised japanese cops on becoming tougher. Since then I noticed more and more complaints from non-japanese upon moving to Japan. Recently it was a guy from Germany who lives in Japan for like +10 years already and was denied being granted Japanese citizenship basically because ... he is gaijin.

Something really fundamental has been changing in Japan in the last few years, kind of an anti-globalisation movement tied to more nationalism - and I have a SLIGHT suspicion that this will become ultra-nationalism. In turn, a second prediction I make is that Japan will become militarily more aggressive and invest more in that. We can already see the writing on the wall here that more conflict will be brewing in the area.

It's a bit unfortunate in that if a country does not really want people to visit it, well - one does not have to go there. There are many other countries in the asian area that aren't as hostile to foreigners now. (Also interesting to see how an aging society suddenly changes to offset immigration. Hopefully we won't hear a single japanese complain about lack of people in Japan. Ironically Paolo is, or rather was, also kind of a gaijin, even though he speaks perfect Japanese of course.)
