shell0x··on Chinese athlete accuses former top Communist Party official of sexual assault
I feel bad for all the Hong Kongers and Taiwanese who fear their future while the west keeps pumping money into this fascist dictatorship which openly tortures people in Xinjiang.

How's is supporting China(CCP) different than supporting Nazi Germany burning jewish people during WW 2?

shell0x··on Creating my personal cloud with HashiCorp
But why not just Cloudformation then? What advantage does Terraform provide over Cloudformation in your opinion?
shell0x··on Creating my personal cloud with HashiCorp
Basically right. And every time the platform changes, terraform has to implement it too! And more often than not, it's supported in the providers implementation than terraform.

I think terraform was better before, but now CloudFormation for me is good enough, so I don't see the point of Terraform.

Cloudformation also has Drift detection now and I really dislike Terraforms state files.

shell0x··on Creating my personal cloud with HashiCorp
Aren't a lot of people just using cloud instead of server now? It's similar to people saying I run on EC2, which is a server, and 95% of the time it's basically a VM.
shell0x··on Creating my personal cloud with HashiCorp
As a DevOps guy, I'm not a huge fan of Terraform.

Often I hear from enterprises that Terraform is cloud agnostic, but that's often very wrong. Terraform modules are still specific to the cloud platform and a rewrite is required to port an app running on AWS to GCP.

If you use AWS, you're probably better off to use AWS Cloudformation and for GCP Google Cloud Deployment manager.

A business reason is often that the engineers are more familiar with Terraform already, but learning Cloudformation is really not that hard...And if you can't work out how to use a basic tool, you should not be running infrastructure anyway, because IT is a constant cycle of change.

I'm not saying Terraform is not good, but I just think a native solution of the platform is preferable over a 3rd party tool.

shell0x··on OK Lenovo, we need to talk
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad L380 and it's the worst laptop I haver ever owned. When I put it on my lap and I hit the wrong spot, it freezes and only turning it off and on again fixes the issue.

I sent it to the Lenovo support center in HK once, but the problem has never been fixed.

Long story short, as a guy who moves a lot internationally, Apple and Lenovo are the only companies offering global warranty and after my horrible experience with Lenovo, I'll be back to Apple!

Thinkpad quality has been terrible after the sale to the China-based Lenovo.

Maybe my experience would have been better with the T or X series though.

shell0x··on Do Dev Careers Die at 35?
Infosec sounds cool indeed, except the part where you have to write up reports :)
shell0x··on Singapore population sees biggest percentage drop since 1950
Singapore is the same as Dubai, just Singapore is better at PR
shell0x··on Singapore population sees biggest percentage drop since 1950
I lived in both Singapore and Sydney, and Singapore is cheaper - food is cheaper in SG - apartments were cheaper in Singapore. Sydney has become expensive - taxes are lower in Singapore - public transport is cheaper in Singapore - alcohol is expensive in both places - My company in Singapore paid medical, but in Australia I had to pay my own medical insurance - In Singapore I got paid all cash but in Australia it's required to contribute to Super which is a horrible system compared to what America got - Expat salaries are higher than in Australia

Singapore has also public housing(HDBs) for locals which are more affordable. Sydney has no affordable housing at all.

I'd say I saved 30-40k more in SG every year.

shell0x··on Google Drive of historical footage locked and flagged as terrorist activity
This is exactly the reason why I'm against Apple CSAM. It's just a matter of time before someone innocent gets flagged.

Lots of parents take a photo of their child having a bath or something similar at least in Europe/Asia and it's clearly of non-sexual nature. Now, how does the Apple algo know that?

I'm generally curious: Have you tried to contact Google before about any kind of issue? It took me like a day or so to chat with an actual person the last time I had an issue.

shell0x··on Former NSA Hacker Describes Being Recruited for UAE Spy Program
The US doesn't have the moral high ground either. Every country has issues.

As a German who's currently in Dubai, I find it amusing when an American judges the UAE.

The US has tons of undocumented/illegal immigrants which live in horrible conditions, but companies still employ them because they're cheap. How's that not modern slavery? How about all the H1B abuses?

In the UAE some companies may abuse the situation of foreign workers too, but the government clearly says you should not hand out your passport.

My American coworkers get taxed on their worldwide income, which basically only one other country does. Dictatorship?

The US started killed so many innocent people in the Middle East to get their hands on the oil.

shell0x··on Libreddit: Private front-end for Reddit written in Rust
Thanks for the tip. This is good enough for me!
shell0x··on Libreddit: Private front-end for Reddit written in Rust
Reddit is horrible to use on mobile devices as well. They're trying to force you to download the app, but I'm not interested to download an app to browse a website. I already have a browser.
shell0x··on Australia’s new mass surveillance mandate
Australia is China lite. In China people don't really have a choice, but in Australia people actually voted for this government, which makes it even worse.
shell0x··on Update from Fastmail on the Australian policing law and privacy
If you care about privacy, use a provider in a country with strong privacy laws. If you don't care, just use Gmail or Microsoft? I really don't see where Fastmail fits in here, unless you're Australian.
shell0x··on Update from Fastmail on the Australian policing law and privacy
As a German living in Australia, I'm absolutely shocked how no one cares about privacy here at all. Every bill basically just passes and there isn't any opposition. I consider any data I store in Australia as compromised.
shell0x··on Vacation isn’t the answer to employee burnout
I don't think there are 8 weeks, but 6 weeks? Spain has 30 days vacation if I'm not mistaken.
shell0x··on Vacation isn’t the answer to employee burnout
That sounds really bad man. I'm originally from Germany, but lived previously in Asia(Singapore/Hong Kong), New Zealand and now Australia. I never got less than 3 weeks vacation.

The US is a good environment to innovate, but it's mostly good for companies and not people.

shell0x··on I nearly lost the Lightroom catalog with of all my photos
I also have no idea how to organize photos and backups well.

As an engineer, I'm good doing it for enterprise stuff, but it's really challenging for personal stuff.

I don't trust Google products anymore, I got burned too many times when they killed their products. They work, but I just don't want to use them anymore.

I currently have a 100GB OneDrive subscription for $3, so that works for now, but I'm pretty close to the storage limit. I'm not a Microsoft fan, but considering it's integrated with Windows now, I assume it will stick around for long.

The same is probaly true with Apple and iCloud.

I've relocated internationally a dozen times, so a NAS doesn't work for me.

There are also other options for just storage like S3 or Azure storage, but the price seems to be almost the same as OneDrive.

shell0x··on I switched from macOS to Linux after 15 years of Apple
I'm not sure if that's common knowledge, but I recently found out that KDE has a distribution called KDE Neon with the latest KDE releases.

https://neon.kde.org

I installed it on a USB flash drive and it's not bad.

shell0x··on Moving Avoids California Tax? Not So Fast
It’s almost as if your government wants to punish you for living abroad.

On the plus side, America accepts dual citizenship and Germany(where I’m from) accepts not, unless I apply for a special permit to retain German citizenship before acquiring another citizenship.

shell0x··on Moving Avoids California Tax? Not So Fast
As a non-American who lived in 6 countries and dealed with different tax offices in Asia/Pacific/Europe, the system sounds absolutely ridicilous to me.
shell0x··on Zx 3.0
I have never seen anyone using Javascript for scripting. Never. It's perfectly fine for app dev, but definitely not for running scripts on a server.

I came across Bash, Powershell, Ruby, Python, Go, Rust, Perl, but JS?

shell0x··on Zx 3.0
This looks horrible to me. The mixing of bash commands in Javascript looks absolutely terrible and running node itself for scripting is a total mess(node_modules, versions).

I usually go with bash + set -euxo pipefail and if it becomes too complicated I switch to Python.

GoLang/Rust are the perfect tool when distributing tools as a single binare. Where in the world does JS fit in?

shell0x··on Debian 11
That's a great way to put it.
shell0x··on Debian 11 “Bullseye” Released
I'm using HN on 13 inch laptop and I never noticed that search at all! Thanks for pointing that out.
shell0x··on Australia is becoming a surveillance state
Exactly. Germans don’t need a visa to work in Switzerland.
shell0x··on Australia is becoming a surveillance state
I understand what you mean, but it’s not exclusive to wealthy countries poaching people from developing countries either right.

In Germany(already a wealthy country) doctors move to Switzerland for better pay and better working conditions too.

It’s also very expensive to move internationally. Visas can cost up to $10,000 alone, so I doubt that so many people actually leave developing countries for developed ones.

There are also tons of people who would never move countries because their family and social circle is in that particular place or they want to make their country a better place.

I also think many people move back home from overseas to their home country, bringing their improved skillset with them.

shell0x··on Netflix intensifies VPN ban and targets residential IP addresses
It’s not Netflix, but content rights I suspect.
shell0x··on Netflix intensifies VPN ban and targets residential IP addresses
Agreed. Outside of the US a lot of content is just not available at all.
