sheepdestroyer··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
I'd argue that, as satire, it's the main point ;)
sheepdestroyer··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
They could easily list the data used though. These datasets are mostly known and floating around. When they are constructed, instructions for replication could be provided too
sheepdestroyer··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
All those things are not self-evident and thus debatable
sheepdestroyer··on OpenAI Furious DeepSeek Might Have Stolen All the Data OpenAI Stole from Us
There are R1 providers on openrouter with bigger input/output token limitations than what DeepSeek's API access currently offers.

For instance Fireworks offers R1 with 164K/164K. They are far more expensive than DeepSeek though

sheepdestroyer··on Hard numbers in the Wayland vs. X11 input latency discussion
I don't think that's true on modern platforms where the compositor (Mutter in the case of Gnome) is always responsible for presenting the frame.

Gamescope's direct scanout bypasses this.

sheepdestroyer··on Hard numbers in the Wayland vs. X11 input latency discussion
Valve's gamescope addresses something that you don't seem to believe exist :

sheepdestroyer··on Hard numbers in the Wayland vs. X11 input latency discussion
It would be interesting to have numbers under gamescope instead, Gnome doesn't care much about gamers & power users that mesure latencies.
sheepdestroyer··on Schrödinger: The Nvidia biotech partner Jensen Huang told to "think bigger"
Seems sensible to blame Nvidia for driver issues while everyone else provide upstream kernel and userspace drivers nowadays.

Linus expressed clearly what many feel on the matter.

sheepdestroyer··on The history of sex toys and what they tell us about ancient women
The concept of work-inappropriate is laughable. Just don't be on internet if that the kind of work environment you have to endure.
sheepdestroyer··on Firefox Is the Superior Browser
According to Mozilla's financial filings, CEO Mitchell Baker's compensation increased from $5,591,406 in 2021 to $6,903,089 in 2022. During that period, Mozilla's revenues – long dominated by payments from Google to make it Firefox's default search – dipped from $527,585,000 to $510,389,000 [...] "Fully 30 percent of all expenditure goes on administration" [1]

In 2018, Baker received a total of $2,458,350 in compensation from Mozilla, a 400% payrise since 2008. Over the same period, Firefox market share was down 85%. [..] In 2020, after returning to the position of CEO, Baker's salary rose to in excess of $3 million. In 2021, her salary rose again to more than $5 million, and again to nearly $7 million in 2022). In August 2020 the Mozilla Corporation laid off approximately 250 employees due to shrinking revenues, after previously laying off roughly 70 in January [2]

I'm of the opinion that there should exist mechanisms for nonprofits to reclaim ill gotten remuneration from ex CEOs

sheepdestroyer··on Linux CoC Announces Decision Wrt Kent Overstreet (Bcachefs)
Believing that a corporate friendly HR-like body with termination power, is what a community project like linux needs is a part of the current problem.

This mentality will encourage the take-over of FLOSS communities by power-grabbing psychopath types that already thrive in corporate environments.

Not sure why would anyone want that.

sheepdestroyer··on Linux CoC Announces Decision Wrt Kent Overstreet (Bcachefs)
Being technically wrong and unproductive during a technical argument should not warrant being insulted.

But It would surely suffice to prevent a demand for a public apology from the exasperated party who was on the right side of the argument ; or at least not before the insulted party having issued an apology for being wrong and uncooperative in the first place.

When CoC have the effect of punishing volunteer work for not being nice/polite/SFW during an argument, regardless of who was technically right, this is putting form over substance.

This is a stance that seems balanced toward corporate friendliness. But I believe that the kernel benefits more from being a community/volunteer oriented project than pandering to corporate culture of niceness over anything else.

Losing BcacheFS over this would be a shame.

sheepdestroyer··on Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update
I thought that it could be done at install time.
sheepdestroyer··on Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update
What prevents to precompile shaders on windows, in a similar way it's done on those other platforms?
sheepdestroyer··on Is the Q source the origin of the Gospels?
"The vast majority of people" would use words without thinking they have etymology and meaning?

Maybe you're only thinking about religious people who would have encountered this one in such a context?

I don't frequent any so I am clueless, but if true I would suspect there could be more than correlation to the aptitude to use words without meaning and religiosity.

sheepdestroyer··on Why systemd is a problem for embedded Linux
Non organic food is very obviously a poison for the vast majority of Earth's life.

See : the current apocalyptic and accelerating global biomass destruction directly caused by industrial farming.

sheepdestroyer··on Red team hacker on how she breaks into buildings and pretends to be the bad guy
For me email is the best, and only, solution for anything important. What would be better, a text message? a phone call? smoke signals?

If you send me a physical letter and require that I'm home to receive it, not lose it in my piles of unopened mail, and reply eventually (with a physical mail? lol) it's already a lost cause.

Most likely I won't be able to take any note during a phone call, if by the most unbelievable chance I am able to pick up when you decide to call impromptu.

Text message, seriously? It's just for spam at this point. It's just the worst 'technical' solution. Unsecure, not travel-proof, etc...

An email leaves precise traces (when, who) can be archived, searched, muted or prioritized as I see fit. You can put text picture & urls inside & whatever else, that I can lookup on my own time.

If it's at all important : Send an email, then send follow-ups when it looks like the matter's urgency needs it (because as you said, obviously you can't assume I'll read it immediately and then remember it).

If it's important -to you- the onus is on you to pick the best technical way to deliver information, and then insist until you get your answer.

sheepdestroyer··on Fable at 20: a uniquely British video game with a complex legacy
Of course, I am not exactly excusing him. But as customer you should also not trust advertisement blindly, especially when it is pie in the sky too good to be true. Most reviews of the time would not miss the opportunity to joke about Molyneux's serial overpromising. It was a running gag before long.
sheepdestroyer··on Fable at 20: a uniquely British video game with a complex legacy
1) Most of these games are really great

2) As with us and our friend, many gamers knew Molyneux for exactly who he is, and thus moderated their expectations accordingly.

sheepdestroyer··on Fable at 20: a uniquely British video game with a complex legacy
When it's vicious and cunning, sure. But the guy's pathological, and still extremely endearing despite that.

I had a high school friend who was lying all the time. His father had access to unheard of cpu prototypes and whatever else. We nicknamed him "C. The Mythomaniac" and called out his bullshit everyday.

He was a really great friend.

sheepdestroyer··on Omega-3 intake counteracts symptoms of anxiety and depression in mice
I'm not so sure about the incertitude you speak of about omega-3s content and ratios in food.

In fact while in Japan I used to specifically select my bags of dried sardine (niboshi) and mackerel cans by the content of EPA and DHA, clearly indicated in mg per 100g. Every such products had these indications with content varying by brands.

I guess that if you master your process you can ensure and advertise a consistent quality.

sheepdestroyer··on Breaking Down OnlyFans' Economics
Not following why that, if true, would make the current situation better ("fine").
sheepdestroyer··on Americans' love affair with big cars is killing them
What's the added value of dealerships? They feel like parasites.

The mere idea of having to negotiate prices like in an flea market is disturbing and disgusting to me.

I want to be treated fairly and as well as the next guy.

Fixed & open construtor prices and warranties, online customisation and ordering should be the only norm.

Don't wait for someone to post the link, just go to archive.is and paste the NYT link there yourself.

Or you could use a browser extension to open these links on archive.is automatically.

But, is it against the rules to directly post archive.is links of pay walled articles on HN?
