shawabawa3··on Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants
It's worth noting that the Fukoshima disaster

1. Lead to basically zero direct deaths

2. Was caused by the forth most powerful earthquake to have ever been recorded in the world (since ~1900), and the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan

3. ~20,000 people died due to the Earthquake

Requiring a nuclear plant in Belgium to be safe enough to survive what caused the Fukoshima disaster is probably not a good use of money

shawabawa3··on UK Biobank leak: Health details of 500k people offered for sale on Alibaba
> The fact that it's being done under government contract and (arguably) within the law shouldn't immediately make it any less bad.

Of course it should, to say otherwise is absurd

what, the NHS shouldn't have _any_ subcontracting? All data must only be held by sacred NHS monks in a vault somewhere?

As long as palentir are holding the data on UK servers, to modern data security standards, and they have a contract to do so, they should be able to

shawabawa3··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
> Because I think "1 employee can do the work of 3 now" still hasn't actually been demonstrated

1 employee doing the work of 3 is I think is a stretch

but 1 employee doing the work of 1.1 employees from a year ago I think is almost certainly true - at least, me and everyone i work with is _at least_ 10% more productive, and using AI extensively

shawabawa3··on Show HN: Gemma Gem – AI model embedded in a browser – no API keys, no cloud
> but giving a 2B model full JS execution privileges on a live page is a bit sketchy from a security standpoint.

Every webpage I've ever visited has full JS execution privileges and I trust half of them less than an LLM

shawabawa3··on Solar and batteries can power the world
Unfortunately human energy use appears to be proportional to the amount of energy available

Hopefully we are able to reach a point of effectively unlimited cheap energy and storage but it's that if overnight we suddenly had enough solar+batteries to power today's usage, we'd suddenly need way more as demand rises

shawabawa3··on Waymo Safety Impact
Hopefully if they ever go to Sri Lanka they get localised tuning because I was surprised to find out flashing your lights over there doesn't mean "go ahead", it means "if you don't get out of my way I will ram you"
shawabawa3··on Stolen Gemini API key racks up $82,000 in 48 hours
not really no

you can set up a cloud function to monitor billing limits and automatically disable billing for a project if it exceeds the limits though

shawabawa3··on Sub-$200 Lidar could reshuffle auto sensor economics
> Tesla are producing cyber cabs now which are 10th the price of Waymo's and can drive autonomously anywhere in the world.

My understanding is that cyber cabs still need safety drivers to operate, is that not the case?

shawabawa3··on OpenAI should build Slack
"plenty of corporations much larger than Google"?

Google is the third largest company by market cap in the world. I suppose by "much larger" you mean number of employees? Walmart maybe?

I doubt there's many out there using slack

shawabawa3··on Skip the Tips: A game to select "No Tip" but dark patterns try to stop you
I checked and it doesn't look like any UK banks have this option - at least I looked at about 5 different banks websites and all have pages suggesting you always select to pay in local currency but none of them have any information on disabling this behaviour

Gemini confirms it's not a thing, and not really possible (the terminals just detect the country from the card number)

shawabawa3··on Substack confirms data breach affects users’ email addresses and phone numbers
Seems like every time it gets shut down it starts right back up again

This source claims it's Breach forums but no idea if it's reliable

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/newsletter-pl...

shawabawa3··on Substack confirms data breach affects users’ email addresses and phone numbers
>I'm fairly sure even mentioning the name of the forum isn't allowed on HN

Well let's find out

I did a tiny bit of research, pretty sure it's BreachForums (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BreachForums)

shawabawa3··on Show HN: I spent 4 years building a UI design tool with only the features I use
Trello was a successful product despite having way less than 20% of jira's features
shawabawa3··on X offices raided in France as UK opens fresh investigation into Grok
If I'm an employee working in the X office in France, and the police come in and show me they have a warrant for all the computers in the building and tell me to unlock the laptop, I'm probably going to do that, no matter what musk thinks
shawabawa3··on From Tobacco to Ultraprocessed Food: How Industry Fuels Preventable Disease
Note that it doesn't deny that it's _any safer_. It says it's still not safe

These are not the same thing

It's likely safer but not meaningfully enough to make much difference, as it's still obviously very bad for you

shawabawa3··on Hacking Moltbook
> Especially when LLMs are used for scientific work I’d expect this to be used to make at least LLM chats replicable.

Pretty sure LLM inference is not deterministic, even with temperature 0 - maybe if run on the same graphics card but not on clusters

shawabawa3··on xAI joins SpaceX
The conflict of interests here is the conflict between musks interests and the other shareholders interests
shawabawa3··on Show HN: NanoClaw – “Clawdbot” in 500 lines of TS with Apple container isolation
> (Thankfully temporarily free on opencode)

they paid $0, it's all VC money printing for now

shawabawa3··on Waymo robotaxi hits a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica
> child pedestrian injury rate at ~2-4x higher than the US human average.

If this incident had happened with a human driven vehicle would it even have been reported?

I don't know exactly what a 6mph collision looks like but I think it's likely the child had nothing more than some bruises and if a human has done it they would have just said sorry, made sure they were ok, and left

shawabawa3··on ASML staffing changes could result in a net reduction of around 1700 positions
in many tech companies they are, an IC6 is paid the same or similar to an M6

The difference is there will probably be a lot more M7+ than IC7+ so getting to the higher ranks is easier as a manager

shawabawa3··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
It's been a bit like the boiling frog analogy for me

I started by copy pasting more and more stuff in chatgpt. Then using more and more in-IDE prompting, then more and more agent tools (Claude etc). And suddenly I realise I barely hand code anymore

For sure there's still a place for manual coding, especially schemas/queries or other fiddly things where a tiny mistake gets amplified, but the vast majority of "basic work" is now just prompting, and honestly the code quality is _better_ that it was before, all kinds of refactors I didn't think about or couldn't be bothered with have almost automatically

And people still call them stochastic parrots

shawabawa3··on De-dollarization: Is the US dollar losing its dominance? (2025)
Isn't that the entire point of congress? Otherwise why not just have an all powerful president and do away with the houses
shawabawa3··on Let's be honest, Generative AI isn't going all that well
Is LLM a technology? Are you complaining about the use of AI to mean LLM? Because I think that ship has sailed
shawabawa3··on Show HN: cubic 2.0 – improving our AI code reviewer (3x more accurate,2x faster)
How can I access cubic's wiki for a repo?
shawabawa3··on What a year of solar and batteries saved us in 2025
As long as you can always swap your battery again I don't see the problem

As long as the average battery health in the system is like 90% and the minimum is say 80% why would you care if you're getting a new battery every few days?

If anything it removes a big cause of depreciation from your car

shawabawa3··on Revisiting the original Roomba and its simple architecture
I'm a fan of the roborock S8 (now the S10 i guess)

It's a vacuum + mop combo which imo is way better for hard floors

shawabawa3··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
> including the way snow doesn't just immediately turn off but stops falling slowly. I love it.

Funny, i disliked this exact detail. I thought turning it off hadn't worked for a few seconds and i retoggled it on and off a bunch of times before i got it

shawabawa3··on A spider web unlike any seen before
I was quoting the caption in one of the images at the top, not the article itself
shawabawa3··on A spider web unlike any seen before
"The cave is full of hydrogen sulphide gas in too high concentrations for most animals to survive"

Over a shot of a bunch of people walking around with no masks on?

shawabawa3··on I spent a week without IPv4 (2023)
Imo they should have just clawed 1 or 2 bits out of the ipv4 header for additional routing and called it good enough
