shaunkoh··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
I’m running an Ubuntu VM via Lima on my m4 Mac mini. Works great.
shaunkoh··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
I got an OWC Express 1M2 precisely because of thermal fears. The heatsink is huge, but no fans. Only real issue is needing to be careful to not nudge the cables.

I also suspect that trying to stream larger LLM models from disk hammered the USB 4 connection too much - lead to system hangs, so now stream from the internal SSD instead.

shaunkoh··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
I used to game on my 2014 MBP. That was a bad idea - took about 5 years, but eventually my batteries became spicy pillows.

Turns out that even with the fans at full blast, the batteries didn’t like being so hot over prolonged periods.

I’m happy with my M4 mini now, with a separate windows pc for gaming.

My plex runs just fine on a 920+ with the same CPU + additional 8GB ram stick. Worth checking out.
shaunkoh··on Chip stocks slide in US and Asia as AI jitters rattle investors
They didn’t spend capital anywhere close to what their peers did on AI.
shaunkoh··on Show HN: Bramble – Local-first password manager
Congrats! How’s it compare vs self-hosted vaultwarden?
shaunkoh··on Oomwoo, an open-source robot vacuum you build yourself
Even though it’s vibe coded, I like the idea of an open source repairable robot vacuum. The current generation of them are notoriously not built to last / be repairable.
shaunkoh··on Ubiquiti: Enterprise NAS, Built on ZFS
They’ve had router firmware updates that have borked networks a few years ago. Software QA processes weren’t up to snuff.
shaunkoh··on MacBook Neo is so popular that Apple doubled production
FWIW I run real linux VMs on my Mac with Lima. Only limitation is that it can’t use the GPU. Otherwise works great for me. Is WSL functionally equivalent?
shaunkoh··on Audiobookshelf: Self-hosted audiobook and podcast server
Does it still play well with the notorious new Plex app?
shaunkoh··on Judge rules Apple executive lied under oath, makes criminal contempt referral
Phil Schiller came across well here in the report. He was overruled by Tim Cook.
shaunkoh··on Organised gangs behind rise in QR 'quishing' scams
How do you protect yourself from this? Treat public QR codes like "free" USB drives – don't use them?
shaunkoh··on Goldman and Apple 'illegally sidestepped' obligations to credit-card customers
Uh, Gmail also has usage limits for each tier. I know before I’ve painstakingly removed emails with large attachments just so I can keep receiving my email.
shaunkoh··on I've eaten a meal replacement shake twice a day for two years (2019)
The author wrote about her experiences 3 years later on: https://www.greaterwrong.com/posts/zpg2C9fmzcGqqhZpE/hyperpa...

TLDR: while meal replacements were technically effective, they did come at a cost to her mental health. Shifting to a well balanced diet appeared more sustainable in the long run.

shaunkoh··on Apple M4 iPad Pro OS Has New Security Exclave for Camera and Microphone Activity
I think that’s meant to be a security feature. If it can be toggled off in software, that lessens the trust that it reliably represents the state of recording.

Maybe a black circle sticker might help? I see people do that to block the camera. Should work just as well for the LED.

Not sure why your comment was downvoted. ^ is absolutely the right answer.

Open WebUI is functionally identical to the ChatGPT interface. You can even use it with the OpenAI APIs to have your own pay per use GPT 4. I did this.

shaunkoh··on A first look at Europe's alternative iPhone app stores
AltServer from the AltStore folks allows you to automate the renewal of sideloaded apps. It’s not perfect, but it’s an excellent workaround.

shaunkoh··on Launch HN: Zenfetch (YC W23) – Turn notes/browser history into an AI assistant
Could it work with bookmarklet as like what pinboard did?

Also any support for importing from pinboard archives?

Safari support would be great. Any chance of a self hosted version?
shaunkoh··on Apple's new iPhone security setting keeps thieves out of your digital accounts
I’ve had great experiences with faceID and touchID over the years, FWIW.
shaunkoh··on Charging a lithium battery to 80% only?
Did you have an automated way to do that?
shaunkoh··on OpenAI just replaced its core values with completely different ones
Pihole works pretty well for me.
shaunkoh··on Craptacular Is More Like It
I checked out the other thread commenting on the original WSJ article and only a handful of people called bullshit. Gruber’s piece is an excellent and thorough critique.
shaunkoh··on So where are we all supposed to go now?
Also looking for Tildes invites, if anyone has one!
shaunkoh··on AI and the Automation of Work
100%. I do know it might come bite me in the ass at some point.

Already I didn’t realise my docker container was saving data to the NON-PERSISTENT data volume. But that was a greater reflection of Chatgpt taking me beyond my knowledge limits, and me being in a place where my ignorance of my ignorance can lead to not-great consequences.

shaunkoh··on AI and the Automation of Work
Lol just an attempt at being pithy. It’s true though. Something about ease of functionality curves making whole classes of new use cases / customers possible.
shaunkoh··on AI and the Automation of Work
It’s been incredibly helpful to me. It helped me figure out how to get docker containers setup. It’s even helped me figure out how to run data analysis on graph data. It’s not just made things simpler – it’s made things possible.

Could payments not be aggregated?

Eg, consumers incur those credit card charges by topping up an online wallet. They “pay” 5 cents from that wallet itself. The news website only receives payment when the aggregated total paid to it hits a certain amount.

General epayment wallets are already widely (Grab in Singapore for instance), even with auto top up. There just isn’t one for news.

shaunkoh··on Substack’s not really great interview with Nilay Patel re:content moderation
> The most egregious part comes about 2/3 of the way down; you can skim until you see a massive block of bold text. Substack Notes is the brand new Twitter-like service that Substack is rolling out.

Nilay Patel, interviewer: No, I really want you to answer that question. Is that allowed on Substack Notes? “We should not allow brown people in the country.”

Chris Best, Substack CEO: I’m not going to get into gotcha content moderation.

NP: This is not a gotcha... I’m a brown person. Do you think people on Substack should say I should get kicked out of the country?

CB: I’m not going to engage in content moderation, “Would you or won’t you this or that?”

NP: That one is black and white, and I just want to be clear: I’ve talked to a lot of social network CEOs, and they would have no hesitation telling me that that was against their moderation rules.

CB: Yeah. We’re not going to get into specific “would you or won’t you” content moderation questions.

[...]

NP: You have to figure out, “Should we allow overt racism on Substack Notes?” You have to figure that out.

CB: No, I’m not going to engage in speculation or specific “would you allow this or that” content.

NB: You know this is a very bad response to this question, right? You’re aware that you’ve blundered into this. You should just say no. And I’m wondering what’s keeping you from just saying no.

CB: I have a blanket [policy that] I don’t think it’s useful to get into “would you allow this or that thing on Substack.”
