shashurup··on Mikhail Gorbachev has died
I've read memoirs by Anatoly Chernyaev [1]. And the whole impression was that Gorbachev had no clue about what do next. He was quite successful in breaking existing system but no feasible plan for further movement. Quite similar to what bolshevicks did earlier. Not surprising such people treated with a big share of skepticism in Russia.

Of course Yeltsin was even worse in this respect.

I'm really astonished. In what kind of echo chamber do you live in? Have you been in Russia in 90's? It was not only an economical disaster, more than ten years we lived in a constant bombardment by the media of "revelations" about our lives before, kinda non stop shit storm (we even believed this was the press freedom as the west sees it).

In the hindsight it seems like it was impossible to devastate a country to such an extent even intentianally. Getting out of this shit strongly correlated with Putin.

shashurup··on Mikhail Gorbachev has died
What does make you think so? I have witnesed everything since Brezhnev. Under Gorbachev thing started to detiriorate quite fast and most people shifted their focus from being happy about the iron curtain removal to making ends meet. As a person who lived through all this I would say that the last 20 years were definitely the best from prosperity and happiness point of view (frankly, the latter not being realted to the regime at all)
shashurup··on Ask HN: What is something you built but never marketed?
Not exactly like the title imply. I built a minimalist RSS reader which I use exclusively. The main reason I don't market it I'm unsure I want to deal with feature requests etc. https://feedcircuit.kibardin.name
shashurup··on Our Roadmap for Nix
From the [1]:

> 3. Add the package to the file pkgs/top-level/all-packages.nix. The Nix expression written in the first step is a function; it requires other packages in order to build it. In this step you put it all together, i.e., you call the function with the right arguments to build the actual package.

shashurup··on Our Roadmap for Nix
Interesting. I don't find the Nix language itself especially complex, however, the whole system built with it is not that easy. For instance, packaging process is very well documented, making a derivation looked simple and reasonable until I decided package some code for myself. At this point things stopped being smooth. According to the documentation I needed to explicitly import my nix file from the top-level list of all packages which was not what I wanted, I'm unsure anybody except me would want my package (at least at the early stage of development). Intuitively, I was sure it wasn't necessary, there definitely must be a simpler way to toy with packaging but skimming through the documentation didn't reveal any answer. Looking at the source code left the impression that I needed a lot more time to understand how things worked behind the hood. On the other hand replacing pyenv with Nix was very pleasant experience. Overriding an existing package with my fork on github was almost a one-liner.

Sorry for not adding up to the discussion, but I can't help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9tzoGFszog
shashurup··on Ask HN: I am losing hope in humanity. What should I do?
I'm afraid I should have been a bit more explicit. Try to look at the humanity not as if it is something good, unique etc. that happens to the universe which is doomed to progress, prosperity and all the good things. It might not be necessarily that way, a contre - it may be a despicable anomaly doomed to extinction bringing everything around with it.
shashurup··on Ask HN: I am losing hope in humanity. What should I do?
I believe there are good movements to look at - VHEMT, Misanthropic division etc. While not all of it are real they may bring you some peace and appeasement. Frustration is a deep chronic sense or state of insecurity and dissatisfaction arising from unresolved problems or unfulfilled needs.
shashurup··on Pidgin: The Universal Chat Client
Sure, I know about plugins. By catching up I rather mean features introduced by the new generation of messengers. Not that features such as like link preview are critical but I would miss them should I use pidgin again.
shashurup··on Pidgin: The Universal Chat Client
I definitely liked it, however, since whatsapp, telegram, slack etc had joined the game with mostly proprietary protocols it looks like it just has no chance to catch up and it is very sad - I find the ability to choose a client quite important.

P.S. I have even written a plugin for - quickpurple

shashurup··on Ask HN: As you get older, do you see programming as merely a means to an end?
As years pass by I feel that I'm starting to be more concerned about the "income" part of the job. At the same time I feel that there are a lot less "bicycles to invent". But while I sleep a lot better when my brain doesn't do coding in background I'm still quite passionate about my job and hope to continue doing it for another 10-20 years.
shashurup··on Death by PowerPoint: the slide that killed seven people (2019)
I still cannot get why was it a big deal to go outside and check the tile?
shashurup··on Poll: Do you prefer the office or work from home?
Interesting. I've never ask myself this question, but reading your post I have realized that I really don't like solving problem together in person with whiteboard etc. Realizing that this cannot be considered as a good trait from professional perspective I still cannot resist the bitter feeling of hours wasted that way. My memory definitely deceives me - it couldn't always be that bad, but I can't help the impression is still strong.
shashurup··on Ask HN: My coworker doesn't work. Does it make sense for me to say anything?
I think the first issue you need to address is your frustration. It is definitely caused by unreasonable expectation of "a salary must always reflect a value a person brings". It would be great if that is true, but in reality it often isn't.

Once you fix this it would be a lot easier to decide what to do. I have heard starting a comic line with that kind of man as one of the characters may be extremely fulfilling and benefitial for the rest of us :-)

shashurup··on Russia says Ukraine talks hit 'dead end', Poland warns of risk of war
> Maybe not present it at prime time on TV, in a way that tells the audience that Russian/Soviet imperialism was a great thing, was sorely needed, and today's actions are a continuation of these great deeds, right before the "news" segment with its usual "these westerners are out to get our poor "Russki Mir"?

Could you share an example of "today's actions are a continuation of these great deeds"? I do see USSR and even empire times nostalgy, but it is just a nostalgy, nothing else.

> They present bad things(imperialism) as good things. Today.

I don't see that happening. Since you state that this is a part of the state propaganda these ideas must be pretty widespread, but I cannot confirm that.

> It's like asking what's wrong with slavery or serfdom in the 19th century.

AFAIK in 19th century British empire dominated the world. So what? I don't quite get your idea of labeling 19th century imperialism bad. They could do better? Probably. It is meaninless to discuss this from a 21th century man's perspective.

> in a way that tells the audience that Russian/Soviet imperialism was a great thing

I would disagree. Soviet "imperialism" was always backwards, everybody was tooking advantage of it, except russians themselves.

shashurup··on Russia says Ukraine talks hit 'dead end', Poland warns of risk of war
I believe the reason is that russians often perceive western worldview as a voice from the ivory tower of free world implying some kind of moral superiority. The whataboutism is just an awkward attempt to decline this very moral superiority.
shashurup··on Russia says Ukraine talks hit 'dead end', Poland warns of risk of war
The reason why any state tries to present its history in a positive light is a different question. Good things are exaggerated, bad things are smoothed over. The states doing the opposite just doesn't live long.

Being positive about USSR and Russian empire and pushing the idea of restoring it are pretty different things. There are no ideas such as rebuilding USSR (or Russian empire) pushed by local media.

> even positive coverage of the imperialism of the Russian empire (the Great Game)

What is wrong with empires by then? This was the way thing worked in 19th century. Are we supposed to condemn that? If yes, was, for instance, feudalism any better?

shashurup··on Russia says Ukraine talks hit 'dead end', Poland warns of risk of war
Or you may someone who live in Russia :)

I can share a worldview many Russians hold. Of course I'm influenced by a state propaganda to some extent, but at least I read both, Russian and Western media.

shashurup··on Russia says Ukraine talks hit 'dead end', Poland warns of risk of war
> b) to fullfill the imperialistic need that has been propagandized out of every hole for the last 15+ years

I honestly cannot grasp where does this narrative come from. I live in Russia and read local media and I don't see the idea being pushed. Putin himself once considered USSR disbanding as catastrophic but nothng beyond that.

shashurup··on Ask HN: What will stay the same in the next 50 years?
I would also ask to elaborate. Looking at its history I don't feel like C has been conceived with some concept in mind. C++ OOP implementation doesn't look the best of its kind.
shashurup··on New material shows zero heat expansion from 4 to 1400 K
The numbers are quite impressive, however, apart from thermal expansion other numbers, such as density and strength are not specified, which makes SR-71 mentioning quite dubious.

That is really interesting, thanks!
shashurup··on Difficult Questions About Freemasonry (2001)
As for me the more interesting questions would be why and what. Without this the answers to the questions which I don't find that important (and difficult) sound kinda kafkaesque.
shashurup··on Why Russians do not smile (2002)
I think it has changed a bit since then. There was not a lot to smile about in Russia in 2002. Not that now we smile at each other every time, but we do this more often and even if we don't faces are a lot less grumpy :)
shashurup··on E-Prime – English without the verb “to be”
I don't think this is that bad. There is nothing like consistent effort to simplify, at least I don't see any :) I don't get this language preservation at any cost sentiment. IMO, there are always features in a language which are unnecessary complex, hard to learn and doesn't at all add up to its expressive power.
shashurup··on YouTube approves ad by Belarusian gov with journalist from hijackd Ryanair plane
My experience with youtube is different. I've never seen an ad which I considered inappropriate, nothing from what you listed. So commenting on that I was mostly focused on content rather than ads. For ads, I think, it is pretty clear that what you mentioned is inappropriate.

But the subj IMO is just an exception which probably sneaked through in the disguise of social ad or something.

shashurup··on YouTube approves ad by Belarusian gov with journalist from hijackd Ryanair plane
> I should be clearer that I'm describing the Russian government, not actual Russians, my apologies.

No problem, I don't take this personally :) Sometimes I just can't help diving into political argument despite outcome in most cases is disappoining and HN is not inteded for such discussions in the first place.

As for vaccines, in most cases it is pretty clear why something happens and motives are obvious. Spreading lies about competitors vaccine is definitely a dirty play but at least understandable tactic. Using toursts as a trade war weapon puzzles me a bit but still can probably be useful to improve negitiation position or whatever. But antivaccination propaganda has just rung a bell - it doesn't pass qui bono test. Antivaccination groups in any country are a minority (AFAIK) and it is hard to use them to "divide and conquer". IMO this kind of campaign most likely has been initiated by some antivaccination activists.

shashurup··on Should we rebrand REST?
And then another couple of hours wasted discussing encoding some complex query into url parameters. On the other hand it was a good lesson to avoid such discussions in the future using any feasible excuse.

Aha, got it, it initially is not for internal consumption, so I'm not that aware of that. Can you share some links? I'm really curious how does it look like.
