sharpn··on Things to tell your first time in a start up employees
I parsed the heading ok, but I agree it should technically be hyphenated: 'first-time-in-a-startup '
sharpn··on Things to tell your first time in a start up employees
Good points well made. I heard a similar differentiation when moving from investment banking to a hedge fund years ago. It's all about adding tangible value.
sharpn··on Ask HN: What other low-probability high-impact events are we ignoring?
In terms of mispriced expectations, it's unprecedented for 1/3 of the world population (<2bn people - India & China) to smoothly transition from 3rd/2nd to 1st world economies without massive internal 'social unrest' (&/or war). Yet that is what we appear to expect... Hope it's the first time.
sharpn··on (UK only DRM?) bbc dramatisation of early UK home computer companies rise & fall
Thanks waqf - I didn't know it was on youtube, otherwise I would have posted your link.
sharpn··on Ask HN: Best/worst stories re. startups communicating with users
Reading between the lines, I guess you are alluding to the specific example jacquesm & swombat refer to - but as a straight answer to the question, I'd say twitter's 'fail whale' was a fun way to take the edge off their frequent early downtime.
sharpn··on Gordon Brown steps down
There was a coalition formed without election during WWII, as an election could not easily have been held. It worked quite well, perhaps partly because nobody wanted to be the one who exacerbated the crisis, and partly the gravity of the situation:

sharpn··on International iPad launch confirmed for May 28 (with pricing)
True - with VAT at 17.5%, £700 is roughly £600 + tax
sharpn··on Co-Working: Please Build This Space...
This looks like the same idea as the hub:

http://kingscross.the-hub.net

It's a little more expensive, but that's London for you...

sharpn··on Spotify next generation explained
Spotify responded that these figures were way out (without giving the true numbers). If I remember correctly, the low figure was for a short period & related only to the Swedish market AND for only the Swedish co-writer's royalty - i.e. it was half of the Swedish royalties for a few months, not the full worldwide royalties for a calender year. Here's one report:

sharpn··on South Park creators warned over Muhammad depiction
I think South Park may have been alluding to this sad story:

sharpn··on A Dismal Guide to Concurrency
Yes, my favourite:

"In essence, transactional memory allows threads to ask for forgiveness instead of permission."

sharpn··on If you're doing a startup, you have to read Papillon.
The (excellent Steve McQueen/Dustin Hoffman) film is available legally & free to watch online until Saturday 10th April 2010 if you're in the UK:

sharpn··on Ron Conway Explained
Thanks for the updated link (no idea why it was moved). I tried to edit, but couldn't - I guess it times out.
sharpn··on Cheap or free web-based tools for your web startup
Good suggestion - I like their higher size limit of 1Gb. I'll check this out, thanks.
sharpn··on Cheap or free web-based tools for your web startup
I found this helps when collaborating remotely, to send big files around - and there are other companies offering a similar service:

sharpn··on Ask HN: What are your AdWords Ratios?
And consider the time value of money - if the LTV is $50 over 2 years, you need to calculate the net present value of that cashflow to you in today's dollars (which will always be less than $50).
sharpn··on Genocide and Jedi: Why the Sith may be Right
A Leo Strauss-style variation of the argument is here:

sharpn··on Italy looking to kill user-generated content sites
The short answer is no - unless they depend on Italian cusomers (or bank via Italy). The longer answer depends on Italy's relative sway with the EU versus your 'home' nation & the significance of what you're doing, but is a qualified 'no'.
sharpn··on Ask HN: I've built a product - how do I take payments in the UK?
I've had no problems with paypal, selling mostly in the UK; I charge £12.50 & get £11.87 from them. Overseas customers see whatever the paypal converted cost is in their currency. But if you're taking recurring payments (say monthly) then definitely look into setting up direct debits - zero or tiny transaction costs. The downside of this is that you'll have to get signed paper mandates until your bank sponsors you to automate this.
sharpn··on Protecting your email with 'AT domain DOT com' is making it easier to find
so if someone includes the word 'specialist' in an email to you, you would never see it. spe cialis t
sharpn··on [dead]
Yes, of course, but I don't have his email address & even if I did, if it was hosted at the same place it might also be down.
sharpn··on View all the letters of Vincent Van Gogh
Here's an example (from literature): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Original_of_Laura
sharpn··on Biz Stone talks about Twitter's monetization strategy (audio)
I believe the BBC DRM allows this to be played worldwide, but can't verify that from here in the UK. Interview is the first 9 minutes of audio.
sharpn··on Gladwell, on creeping determinism
It appears that Gladwell wasn't in error - 'his webmaster' fesses up here (sorry for the horribly long url): http://gladwell.typepad.com/gladwellcom/2009/11/letting-igon...
sharpn··on Getting it wrong over coffee
There are some good free resources, like this one:

http://www.classiccmp.org/transputer/finengineer/

But there's probably also lots of information available on your intranet - there's bound to be a wiki with some good information. And if your company subscribes to the ISDA library (about £11k pa) you can get a userid & dig out stuff there. What I found most useful was to get a copy of trade confirms & read them until I understood - plus copy some modelling spreadsheets & tinker with the inputs to see what effect they have on the outputs. For really heavy financial maths subscribe (for free) to Willmott & search around there. Good luck.

sharpn··on Ask HN: The Primers on different subjects
For architecture I found 'A History of Architecture' by Bannister Fletcher to be a good start, but my copy is very old (1943 edition) - so try elsewhere if you want to include modernism from the outset. I'm told it's a classic.
sharpn··on Poll: What are the Meyers-Briggs personality types of HN?
Brown's text was longer, but he credits it as Forer's idea originally (in his book 'Tricks of the Mind' p322)
sharpn··on Pitch yourself, not your idea
Or rather, pitch your idea - but be aware that the person to whom you are pitching may be primarily assessing you.
sharpn··on Ask HN: How do you recommend things to your friends?
I don't write TripAdvisor or Amazon reviews, but they can inform my choices (both +ve & -ve) if I'm considering a purchase.
