Did you mean Central America?

sharkster711··on American EVs reduced gasoline consumption by just 0.54% in 2021
That's a lot in just one year
sharkster711··on Electric ferry uses a long extension cord [video]
It would increase the weight of the boat though, by quite a bit so you'd end up needing a bigger battery. The battery also does not have 100% efficiency so add in another 10% for losses. You'd also need downtime to charge that battery up - about 15-20 hours if you use level 2 charging. Yes, 200 kwh seems oddly low.
sharkster711··on Tell HN: Employers are not desperate to hire developers
I think the job market will get better by mid January 2023, when budgets open up. TC will probably be quite a bit lower than 2021 offers, but there's work to be done everywhere.

It's unlikely the screening bar has gone up - are you sure you're doing well on the tech screens?
sharkster711··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
Reducing salaries opens a whole new can of worms with legal and immigration involved. Basically, if you hire someone on a visa, it is going to be a hassle to reduce their salaries - and the knock on effects could include restarting the immigration process. It might end up costing more than the dollars saved, and employees will likely leave anyway.
sharkster711··on D2: A new declarative language to turn text into diagrams
That's probably why they're doing a code dump

Does anyone know what the clipboard tool that was being used in the youtube demo is?
sharkster711··on Congress urged to ease immigration for foreign science talent
I moved myself and my job to Canada (L6 engineer at FAANG). It's been alright, I wish I could stay but didn't really see a way forward in the USA, immigration-wise.

I think folks in the US fail to see that they'll be competing with engineers of other nationalities - regardless of if they're in the USA or outside, and there's really nothing that Congress or anyone else can do to prevent remote jobs (and the trickle-down monies) from leaving the country.

sharkster711··on Congress urged to ease immigration for foreign science talent
Most American educated scientists aren't American, unless that's what you meant.
sharkster711··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
I have a TCL TV (with Roku) and searching for a show using the voice remote generally gets me the result and also which app is streaming it. I use it all the time these days.
sharkster711··on Apple starts manufacturing iPhone 13 in India
iPhones are ridiculously expensive in India because of the import taxes - a decent chunk of the population would be able to afford them if they were brought in line with the US prices.
sharkster711··on Hyper-realistic digital humans in Unity
Isn't that Carrie-Anne Moss?
sharkster711··on India considers buying discounted Russian oil, commodities
That's a pretty simplistic view - EU buys Russian oil as well but you'd hire them, right?
sharkster711··on Finland starts much-delayed nuclear plant, brings respite to power market
I'd guess a lot of the operating cost of nuclear plants is just the cost to break even - that's repaying infrastructure loans etc
sharkster711··on Finland starts much-delayed nuclear plant, brings respite to power market
From https://www.renewableenergyworld.com/baseload/can-geothermal...

Some 42 million megawatts of energy reach the surface continually and are radiated into space as the earth cools from its initial molten state more than 4 billion years ago. No feasible amount of geothermal development could make even a small dent in this process. Furthermore, the earth’s heat budget is continually replenished by the radioactive decay of naturally occurring elements, and almost all of the energy associated with each decay event is converted to heat. Plus, the heat content of the geothermal reservoir rocks is continually replenished by conduction of heat from the earth’s deeper interior.

sharkster711··on Ask HN: What do I need to learn to be useful as a hacker to defend my country?
Look at CSPM (cloud security posture management) solutions, it ensures there aren't any silly holes in your cloud like open S3 buckets etc, as well as ensuring pretty advanced organization specific custom policies. Look at Prisma, Wizio, Crowdstrike Horizon, etc.
sharkster711··on Peloton replaces CEO and lays off 2,800 people
Yes, they're an environmental disaster.
sharkster711··on The impact of hardware specifications on reaching quantum advantage
Yes to the first question.

For the second, it would depend on easy/hard it is to mine to get to the point where you can replicate a snapshot, and how easy/hard it is to continue mining on from that point. It is very unlikely the new protocol will hold the same value as BTC would have had.

sharkster711··on Leetcode has taught me that I'm a bad engineer
You move jobs every couple months?
sharkster711··on You can't lure employees back to the office
Most people in the US want to own the house they live in, and most would also want to not move when they move jobs. I think the campus idea would only appeal to younger folks.

I'd also not like the idea that my life revolves around work - and this sounds exactly like that.
