sharker8··on My daughter (7 years old) used HTML to make a website
whats the dns setup?
sharker8··on Is Delaware the cheapest place to incorporate?
Please provide references for the term "scary" and "not for the uninitiated."
sharker8··on Earthworms contribute to 6.5% of global grain production
Spider plants are great cover for a compost bucket with composting worms in case you are getting into composting.
sharker8··on Ask HN: What web frameworks do you use?
I like Next.js
sharker8··on Escaping High School
"wear a helmet until you are comfortable with whatever wheels you are riding" sounds like a formula for "die on a bike once you've hit the dunning kruger effect"
sharker8··on Tech layoffs shock young workers, older people not so much
Rent is still less than 1/3 of post tax income most places if you have a high paying tech job. Also you can always downsize on stuff to save on floorspace.
sharker8··on Tech layoffs shock young workers, older people not so much
This both oversimplifies the experiences of people who have been through economic cycles before (some of them are shocked too), and underestimates the power of the human imagination. I for one believe I can read about an era I didn't experience, use my imagination to think about what it would have been like to live during that time, and if something similar happens in my lifetime, be less 'shocked'. I think many people can do this too!
sharker8··on Can Duolingo actually teach you Spanish?
Followers of Krashen know that it's sensible input that results in language acquisition. Duolingo gamifies the frequency of sensible input. Therefore Duolingo will work if frequently and consistently used. Fluent is an outdated term. It probably takes about six months to achieve any lasting result. Illusion of progress is impossible to prove or disprove probably.
sharker8··on Ask HN: How do you upskill your teams technical writing?
A deliberate practice environment has four elements: 1) Repeat exposure (aka volume of attempts) 2) Valid environment (a win is a win and a loss is a loss) 3) Timely feedback (you know immediately whether you won or lost) 4) Deliberate practice. Deliberate practice without the other three is not complete.
sharker8··on Notice of termination of Twitter merger agreement
The Anti Cramer portfolio is not a sufficient contrarian approach, because the Cramer portfolio also underperforms similar to a random walk. Put another way, the opposite of a random walk is another random walk.
sharker8··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
I think the bias against Leetcode is not specific enough. My bias against leetcode: stop screening at leetcode easy/medium. Screen instead at Hard/Extra hard.
sharker8··on Credit Scores Can Run – and Ruin – Our Lives
Credit scores are part of the marketing scheme to make people think they need mortgages. Slight exaggeration but not far from the truth.
sharker8··on U.S. forgives 40k student loans
Companies value people who can apply the scientific method (experimental design, data gathering, data analysis, etc). They hire people who have acquired this specific knowledge often through grants. Whether these subsidies lead to application of the specific knowledge gained through the grant underwriting process is debatable. Companies will hire people who studied something that requires the scientific method for which there is maybe no market, and make them apply that approach to things for which there is a market.
sharker8··on U.S. forgives 40k student loans
This create market driven dynamics in which degrees basically are tailor made for industry. This approach disincentivizes pure research for scientific purposes.
sharker8··on Ketogenic Diets and Chronic Disease: Benefits vs. Risks
I tried Keto and all I got out of it was weight loss in year one, followed by plateauing, and then weight gain, and then a nice update from my dentist that I had borderline high blood pressure. Since then I've gone to mostly "low fat, mostly starch, not much animal protein" and I look and feel much better.
sharker8··on On Leaving Facebook
This post is missing the key detail: is this person taking risks with 'the house's money' (high net worth, can generate passive income) or not? The answer is probably yes having spent that many years at fb, but I found the tone of 'I'll cut to the chase, I took a pay cut' disingenuous. The real questions is 'is this person already high net worth or not'.
sharker8··on Using a mild Twitter addiction to get things done
I think progress would be to use terms like 'mild' and 'addiction' in different sentences.
sharker8··on Ask HN: Is there a place on HN for interesting yet flame-war inducing topics?
I think people like myself have throwaway accounts for this purpose. For example, I use this account to say things I think might end up with negative karma. However, right now this account has positive 78 karma. Just a hack I and probably others use to get around 'reasonable-ey' filters like the HN karma system.
sharker8··on The Universal Structure of Storytelling
No, it is as the author argues the effect of stories with clearly defined antagonists and protagonists.
sharker8··on The Universal Structure of Storytelling
Agreed on that one can interpret the author's stance as bigoted because there is a cultivated myth here which is sentimental and all about how stories pre printing press were all about banding tribes together. People love this myth because it fits the mold of 'techno-optimism'. They were of course also about kinda boring things like record keeping about crops, but westerners ignore that and say those aren't stories because they don't have characters or something. As if we can generalize about things for which we have absolutely no record in many cases. Also as if western people invented the concept of a narrator (implied in this article but I've heard it elsewhere).
sharker8··on Why philosophers should care about computational complexity (2011)
Are we talking continental or analytic philosophers?
sharker8··on Judge dismisses FTC and state antitrust complaints against Facebook
Judge makes age-ist joke? See page 8 from the court ruling: "Begin with Insta, as those in the know — viz., our children — refer to it"
sharker8··on Well-behaved bubbles often make history
No, the pay/expense ratio is not good at a global level. The odds of making it to an 'early' retirement at age 60 at 50k per year and saving 20k are very low. The odds at 150k saving 50k are equally low. This is because the net worth required to move to passive income, due to ZIRP, has gone way up.
sharker8··on Well-behaved bubbles often make history
Based on these comments I believe everyone here is talking about the resiliency of the tech job market. I'm talking about the resiliency of the job market in the US, and the job market globally, what are sometimes called 'semi-skilled' jobs (a truly brutal term but hopefully that helps people get it). Even this doublespeak about talking about resiliency of markets implies a certain amount of dogma about how markets, not people, need to be resilient. If the market is resilient, it will somehow trickle down to ordinary folk.
sharker8··on Well-behaved bubbles often make history
This article is an ingenious version of 'all our investments were too early' defense.
sharker8··on Well-behaved bubbles often make history
Reminds me of a meme about the current state of real estate prices. Which is that because banks became stricter about lending, it's not a bubble this time. The reason it can still be a bubble is that 1) ZIRP and 2) while governments somewhat achieved their mandate of low unemployment, employment stability (not having to constantly job hop to survive) is through the floor. That's why this is a structural megabubble IMO and isn't tracked very well with the proxy of 'how much debt is on individual balance sheets'.
sharker8··on Playwright for .NET is now stable
I thought it was a tool for me to use openai to generate play scripts.
sharker8··on Fierce Nerds
Maybe it was a well adjusted school, or maybe it was a school in which achievement culture and college application stacking and reverse engineering had fully run their course. After all, 'well rounded' on paper people get into elite colleges, and people from elite colleges have a better shot at becoming rich. Nothing less nerdy than wanting to be rich.
sharker8··on Fierce Nerds
If there are star QBs that play DND (somehow I doubt there actually are that many) this is just proof that DND has gone mainstream and is therefore being commercialized as nerdy while actually not nerdy any more. This is known in some parlances as 'nerd-chic'.
sharker8··on Ask HN: Desperately need “sales for nerds” advice
That's assuming you have product market fit. If you understand a problem but don't have a product, you are a consultant.
