shared4you··on Indian Government adopts an open source policy
What is BOSS Linux's contribution to upstream (Debian) ? AFAIK, it's zero.

Some gripes about BOSS:

(1) On the BOSS Download page, the download button downloads i386. Why isn't the 64-bit ISO listed there ?

(2) Why are there no torrents for ISOs ? Don't they know how bad Internet connection in India is ?

As far localization, my experience had been that BOSS is no better than Debian.

shared4you··on Indian Government adopts an open source policy
Linus Torvalds would be so happy to hear that Linux is moving to C++ and OOP. http://harmful.cat-v.org/software/c++/linus
shared4you··on 16th Century Book Can Be Read Six Different Ways
Indeed, Venkatadhvari's 17th century Sanskrit work Raghava Yadaveeyam narrates the story of Ramayana (left-to-right) and Mahabharata (right-to-left) simultaneously.

shared4you··on NixOS Linux
NixOS has been discussed many times on HN already. However, Nix 1.9 was released today (/yesterday for the some):

shared4you··on GitHub unveils its Licenses API
Thanks, cool tool ! A suggestion: Making the first column to have URL linking to the repo's homepage would be useful.
shared4you··on ReText – Markdown Editor with Live Preview
Another one for Mac: [Multimarkdown Composer][1]. A friend of mine uses it and I think it worked well.

shared4you··on Make a Lisp in Nim
Are your graphs up to date ? Seems just an hour ago [1]:

> Rust: build with --release. 10X performance boost!

That might mean that Rust would top the charts instead of Nim.

shared4you··on XSV – A fast CSV toolkit in Rust
Indeed it does, although not directly. From the RFC:

> TEXTDATA = %x20-21 / %x23-2B / %x2D-7E

So, it is a subset of ASCII whose hex codes must lie in the ranges given above. Basically, any printable ASCII character with the exception of 0x22 (= double quote) and 0x2C (=comma) which serve other purposes.

shared4you··on Keep a Changelog
Indeed, your format looks exactly like what Perl's CHANGES spec stipulate: https://metacpan.org/pod/distribution/CPAN-Changes/lib/CPAN/...
shared4you··on Invisible Click Tracking Using “Empty” UTF-8 Characters
Nitpick:

> The idea is to use zero-width and space characters of UTF-8 such as U+200B, U+200C, U+200D

That must be Unicode, not UTF-8.

shared4you··on gettimeofday() should never be used to measure time
OP or mods: please add [2010] tag to the title.
shared4you··on Help HN, lets make GitHub accessible again from India
I'm getting an error message [1]:

"Sorry your session has expired. Kindly login again to continue."

even if I have just logged in. I cleared cookies, etc. but no use. And that error text is in white font over pink background -- hard to read without mouse-selecting.

shared4you··on Give me back my sanity: How I had to install Pandoc in a CentOS Docker container
I had the exact same problem on an Ubuntu server at work. Since I don't have root access, I was forced to compile from source. I gave up when I couldn't compile Cabal.

My solution was Multimarkdown 4 [1]. It supports many basic Pandoc features I need (tables, etc.). Exports to HTML and PDF. Since it is written in C, the compilation was straight forward. 10 minutes later, my document is ready. Couldn't have been happier.

shared4you··on Show HN: A database for browsing and discovering movies
Missing feature: Sort by language. This is especially important for massively multilingual countries like India. Choosing 'India' lists hundreds of movies, but I would like to sort it by language (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, etc.)
shared4you··on DAVdroid: An open-source CalDAV/CardDAV synchronization app for Android 4+
I discovered various CardDAV servers listed on Davdroid's homepage. I just installed Baikal server and worked flawlessly with Davdriod. THanks OP and DAVdroid !
shared4you··on Poll: How religious is hacker news?
Classifying Hinduism and Buddhism as "religions" in the Western sense of the word is imprecise and misleading at best.

You can be a Hindu atheist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charvaka

Swami Vivekananda popularized the Ramakrishna school of thought, but they themselves deny to be called Hindus.

Goa deputy Chief Minister considers himself to be a "Christian Hindu": http://www.firstpost.com/politics/india-hindu-nation-im-chri...

Hinduism in not an organized religion like Abrahamic religions. The definition of Hinduism is very fluid in practice.

Similarly one can be a Buddhist atheist as well.

PS: Also please add Sikhism and Jainism to the poll -- two other major Indian religions!

shared4you··on The Middle East Friendship Chart
> India for example was ruled primarily by Muslim rulers for over a thousand years

Factually incorrect. India as a whole (esp. south India) was never under complete Islamic rule, let alone for a 1000 yrs. The Delhi Sultanate started around 1200 and British colonialism around 1700. That's around 500 years of Muslim rule esp. in north India.

shared4you··on Google Noto Fonts
I have been using Noto fonts for a more than 6 months now (mostly Indic fonts) and quite pleased with them. And just saw that they have "Noto Sans Brahmi" in the pipeline. Although Brahmi script (ancient Indian script used around 300 BC) entered Unicode in 2010, there is not a single font available that covers Brahmi.

I also couldn't find any font that covers mathematical symbols from the SMP.

EDIT: Just downloaded the zip archive. Unix permissions for the Bengali and Gurmukhi fonts are different from the rest of them.

shared4you··on Secure Your Domain – Where Is Safe to Register a Domain Name? (2012)
What do you guys think about OVH? I believe they stood by Wikileaks in the past. But their servers are listed in the top 10 spamming hosts.
shared4you··on Accept my accept-language
The flag doesn't work for the billion people of India. We are massively multilingual; we have 22 official languages. Google.co.in is offered in 9 of those 22 languages -- each one with its own unique script, which are mutually un-intelligible. One Indian flag for all languages? No, thanks. Look at the confusion caused by the Metropolitan Police website [1].

If you can afford two pop-up lists, the approach of Lufthansa is the best [2]. If you want just one list, follow the installation screen of Ubuntu -- they write out the name of the language in its own script.

shared4you··on ReText - Markdown editor for Ubuntu
The README says:

     we recommend using version (Python) 3.2 or higher
It requires Python >= 3.2. It didn't run on my Ubuntu machine which has default 2.7

And it doesn't support tables or code syntax highlighting. [Of course, I know they aren't part of the original Markdown].

shared4you··on Optimizing loops in C for higher numerical throughput and for fun
Doesn't gcc's "-funroll-loops" do the same thing? This looks more manual work to me, unrolling loops by hand.
shared4you··on Nine awesome features and extensions for Mercurial
If I understand these correctly, I can come up with this mapping between Hg <--> Git

    rebase <--> rebase
    histedit <--> rebase -i

    unbundle <--> ???
    purge <--> clean -x -d -f
    alias <--> [alias] section in gitconfig
    color <--> [color.*] section in gitconfig
    progress <--> ???
    pager <--> core.pager in gitconfig
shared4you··on Mathematica on Raspberry Pi for free
This is why Debian does not recommend Raspberry Pi [0]

> Despite the hype it is a more closed platform than many other things you could buy

Claiming to be open, but still encouraging and endorsing non-open-source software. I was startled to read why R.Pi is unsuitable for education [1]

shared4you··on Searchable catalog of Udacity, edX, Coursera, etc.
The website navigability sucks. Just open this page:

http://www.coursebuffet.com/sub/computer-science

Then enjoy clicking "Load More", "Load More" forever. The UI seems to be mobile-optimized, but very bad usability on desktop. Is there are "Show All" button instead of clicking Load More all the time?

shared4you··on Pragmatic D Tutorial
I got interested in D, so I borrowed Andrei's book from the library. The talk is that the publication of TDPL marked the stabilization of D version 2. I tried out the examples in the first few pages of that book. An example in Chapter 1 itself didn't compile (page 8). Well, is that what you call a stable language? I don't want to waste time when the API is still changing so much. I thought, I'll come back may be for D version 3.

[edit] Oh BTW, the Pragmatic D tutorial is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
