shanev··on Maker Faire halts operations and lays off all staff
Radio Shack should buy Maker Faire.
shanev··on A history of tea, the second most-consumed beverage in the world (2017)

shanev··on Launch HN: Withfriends (YC W19) – Memberships for Small Businesses
Congrats Joe! Wouldn't have thought I'd see you or the mention of Silent Barn on HN!
shanev··on Jack Dorsey says it’s time to rethink the fundamental dynamics of Twitter
I think it's impossible to re-think Twitter and satisfy everyone. I completely switched who I follow (using Lists) twice already based on my interest changes in technology. First Rails, then iOS, now "crypto". I was early enough in the first two communities to know who the movers and shakers were. However it took me a while to find who is worth following in "Crypto Twitter". So I personally welcome any attempts to show me relevant content from folks I don't follow yet in the field.

shanev··on Ask HN: How did you decide what problems to solve in your lifetime?
May I ask why you want to work on energy? If it’s because of climate change, it may surprise you that the #1 thing you can do to reduce total CO2 is to educate women and girls, and family planning:

Update: Yes I know these aren’t the same, but they’re related.

shanev··on Ask HN: How do you organise your hard drive?
I started this route after being influenced by GOPATH. Can’t imagine anything else now.
shanev··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2019)
TruStory | Los Angeles, CA | Software Engineer | Full-time | Onsite | https://www.trustory.io

At TruStory, we are building a platform for validating and verifying content, starting with the cryptocurrency space. For an example of what this could look like, check out our forum posts on claims made about Ethereum: https://discourse.trustory.io/t/tuur-demeesters-ethereum-cla....

Our stack is React Native / Typescript for mobile, and Golang for the blockchain backend.

We are building TruStory as a decentralized app, using Cosmos SDK, a next-gen blockchain platform.

Contact shane+hn@trustory.io for questions, or apply directly at https://boards.greenhouse.io/trustory/jobs/4070176002.

shanev··on Ask HN: Which tool do you use to create beautiful diagrams?
Github employs a bunch of designers. The diagram in this specific example looks like a custom job to me. Probably Sketch or similar tool.

That said, my old standby is OmniGraffle. Makes it super easy to create any type of diagram on macOS.

shanev··on Just tell me how to use Go Modules
Today I had to write some deployment scripts and the value of a fixed GOPATH really dawned on me. No matter which machine I use, I always know my code will be at GOPATH/src/...

I didn't have to fiddle with any paths or env vars in my scripts. It made my day easier. This is an example of something that seems like a good practice only after you've gotten some gray in your beard.

shanev··on A Raft implementation in Haskell
Care to enlighten us without resorting to a personal attack Dave?
shanev··on A Raft implementation in Haskell
There’s Tendermint: https://tendermint.com/, which is gaining popularity in distributed systems projects. It’s Byzantine fault tolerant, unlike Raft and Paxos.
shanev··on Small robots may kill the tractor and make farming efficient
Aren’t paper and cardboard biodegradable compared to styrofoam and plastic? The atmosphere and soil know how to handle it.
shanev··on Small robots may kill the tractor and make farming efficient
If farming can be done more mechanically than chemically, it'll be better for the environment in the long run. We'll need less pesticides, and have less top-soil erosion.
shanev··on Long-Awaited Study Results on Vitamin D and Fish Oil Supplements
"The study, which was also a randomized clinical trial, tracked participants for an average of five years. The volunteers took icosapent ethyl, which is sold under the brand name Vascepa and was developed by the Amarin Corporation, which funded Bhatt's research."

Because if they spun the study as a success, the funders of this study, a pharmaceutical company, wouldn't be able to promote their drug.

shanev··on Sweden's cashless society is no longer a utopia
This is exactly what Zcash is building.
shanev··on Paul Buchheit on Joining Google, How to Become a Great Engineer, and Happiness
> You joined Google because you were deeply interested in Linux. Is there a technology you're equally excited about today? This is a question which I would be curious for someone else to tell me the answer to! The closest thing I can think of is Bitcoin and crypto. I'm pretty sure they would have captured the attention of 21 year old me.

Can relate so much with this article. Maybe because we’re around the same age. Crypto reminds of me of Linux and the early days of the Internet. I see the potential and that’s why I’m working in it.

shanev··on Instagram’s Co-Founders Said to Step Down from Company
I’ve had three misses of similar magnitude. No regrets.
shanev··on In killing Inbox, Google takes another swipe at its most passionate users
My favorite feature of Inbox was the organization of Trips. Thankfully there's still TripIt.
shanev··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2018)
TruStory | Los Angeles, CA | Software Engineer | Full-time | Onsite | https://www.trustory.io

The Internet lets anyone, anywhere broadcast a message to the rest of the world. It connects the 4 billion people on the Internet to one another. It’s undoubtedly the greatest invention of humanity. But the ease of sending information unfortunately also allows misinformation to spread. How do you reconcile these two opposing forces, openness and trust? One solution is to hinder or to censor. But that’s been tried before and miserably fails. But imagine if information policed itself by the people creating that information.

At Trustory, we're looking for full-stack engineers to help build this for the world. Our tech stack is primarily Typescript, React Native, Node, GraphQL, and Go (Golang).

We value ethical, curious, and passionate people. We don't care about your grades. We don't care about your pedigree.

We are building TruStory in a decentralized manner, using blockchain platforms like Cosmos SDK and Ethereum. You’d be one of our first hires, and get a chance to work with some of the most experienced engineers and advisors in the industry.

shanev··on Dietary carbohydrate intake and mortality: a prospective cohort study
“There are limitations to this study that merit consideration. This study represents observational data and is not a clinical trial; however, randomised trials of low carbohydrate diets on mortality are not practical because of the long duration of study required. Another limitation of this study is that diet was only assessed at two time intervals, spanning a 6-year period, and dietary patterns could change during 25 years.”

This study is based on a 66 question FFQ (food frequency questionnaire) spanning a six year period. Do you remember what you ate last month? A year ago? Six years ago? Maybe a more modern version of these types of studies can be done if the subjects are required to take pics of everything they ate instead of reporting from memory on a questionnaire.

shanev··on Launch HN: RevenueCat (YC S18) – Simple API for Managing In-App Subscriptions
Hi Jacob :) Good to see you still building things. I love your optimism but this is something I've heard countless times that almost never holds true. Truth is you eventually get bored of a product after a few years and move on. It's not even always about the money. Also, you're playing in space where Apple could build their own and Sherlock you. I know a thing or two about that.
shanev··on Facebook Makes Moves on Instagram Users
I believe the number of people that want a non-algorithmic feed is way bigger than 1%. A ton of people signed up for Vero when it first launched specifically because they advertised having a non-algorithmic feed. It’s a frequent complaint amongst even my non-technical friends.

shanev··on Advice
I wouldn’t be where I am today without 2600. Hacking (real hacking, not pg’s definition) is what lead me to learn to code when I was a teenager back in the 90s. Many of the folks I met via 2600 may not be CEOs but are extremely successful. Sage advice.
