shams93··on Suno AI
While it can only do american popular music styles its already useful for making samples that are at least not samples of straight up copywrited material
shams93··on Why does everyone love Tailwind?
Coming from the pre-framework web I do everything by hand and shockingly my site kicks the competition to death in terms of speed and SEO performance. People forgot about web standards and embrace these frameworks instead. And that made sense when internet explorer was still relatively widely used. We needed code compilers because many browsers could still only handle es5 and nto es6. Now all current browsers support all the modern stuff including modules. We can go back to scripting with js.
shams93··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2023
My Thinkpad Yoga 11e running Manjaro, got this refurbished for $160.
shams93··on Is Shoplifting Really Surging?
When you're over 50 and out of work the state won't give you food stamps so you could be forced to steal or die
shams93··on Cannabis that people are using for anxiety is probably making it worse
Actually when used in conjunction with wellbutrin and zoloft this trio can work much better than any of these three by themselves.
shams93··on The Small Website Discoverability Crisis (2021)
Google is also a part of the problem here because everything is automated if Google wanted to help nurture the creative web they could at least feature new sites on web.dev.
shams93··on How long until prices go back down?
War is inflationary
shams93··on Ask HN: Would You Change/Update the iPad
They need to embrace using virtual machines on ipad pro if they want to keep up with the capabilities of chromeos. The ipad is great for music production but not much besides that.
shams93··on I Won't Use Next.js
I love nuxt, all of the benefits of a next like system none of the react headaches with the move to vue and typescript with vue3.
shams93··on Gen Z wants less sex in TV and movies
I'm Gen X so I think every movie sucks except Repo Man
shams93··on Is Russia Now a Criminocracy?
The US certainly is at this point.
shams93··on Just turned 29, any advices?
In this awful economy I'd be joining the Space Force at 29 to get some income after the tech market was obliterated this year.
shams93··on Ask HN: How's your job search going in this current economy?
Basically I went back to school to be a pharmacy tech because it seems like a hopeless job market after looking hopelessly for 18 months even after having survived as a web developer since 1995.
shams93··on Ask HN: How's your job search going in this current economy?
Its even worse than dot bomb (2000-2004) however is it all github copilot eating these jobs? I think some, but also with the success with remote work I image most roles were simply sent out of the US, and could be an outsourced team with extra help from copilot and other tools.
shams93··on Can the free market ensure artificial intelligence won't wipe out human workers?
No it just wiped me out already
shams93··on New approaches to the tech talent shortage
This seems like its stuck in 2021
shams93··on Ask HN: Have you noticed huge spam/scam campaign on YouTube?
In general the worse the economy gets the more scams you see. Like nearly every job posting I find is a scam to try to get me to pay for a job listings site.
shams93··on Why aren’t more people being sacked?
They have the powers that be are simply failing to measure it, I lost my job last year was unable to find more work but I am counted as employed.
shams93··on Flexport is rescinding a bunch of signed offer letters
This is why the Fed and Biden think the economy is doing great they count those 200 job as actual openings not mistakes.
shams93··on Square is down
Those are all garbage collected languages so I am betting they are reaching the size where they're going to need to transition to stronger iron like rust or c++.
shams93··on Chromebooks Were Once a Good Deal for Schools. Now They’re Becoming E-Waste
This is a good point, actually I think schools should buy the leftover devices and then run linux on them so kids can be learning things like django at school.
shams93··on Ask HN: Any of you run Kubernetes clusters in-house?
So if you mean in house, being on premise in your own mini data center, you can find these cheap mini pcs, buying actual hardware can save a lot like you could use 3 mini pc's to make a cluster using ubuntu's version of k8s.
shams93··on Ask HN: Static Site Generator for Newspaper
Drupal can generate static sites it might work better for the whole team than a command line ssg like hugo.
shams93··on Ask HN: Is finding a dev job getting difficult in 2023?
I am finding it extremely difficult, its hard for me to believe its a tight labor market with so little employment in LA.
shams93··on Hate Gen X? Get in Line (Behind a Gen X-Er)
Boomers will still be alive after they have wasted all of us GenX by putting down work requirements to get food when at the same time the fed is hard shutting down the economy.
shams93··on Prisoners of Google Android Development
Yeah this is why the only way to go seems to be PWA, you can publish a PWA to the android app store but if anything goes wrong people can still access it from the web without the app store. With a pure native app when things go haywire we are left with 0 options.
shams93··on Tech jobs market normalizing as July unemployment dips
Yeah here in LA its especially bad with the hollywood strikes competition for work has never been more intense.
shams93··on P2panda: P2P protocol for secure, energy-efficient local-first web applications
This looks super cool! I was thinking I couldn't finish my PWA without a database but its much cooler to use this instead I really don't want to store stuff for people who buy my service, I want to sell them support instead of storage.
shams93··on The Antagonists: The rise and fall of type-in text games
I grew up on Infocom games on apple iie. However now the focus is largely on graphics to the extreme, it could be that a lot of people simply cannot read and write well enough to get into a text based game, they had a comeback during the dialup internet days with Muds. If one went and then had such a game translated into enough languages perhaps it could find a world wide niche.
shams93··on What other careers can laid off software engineers move to?
I went back to school to be a pharmacy tech, if you're good at math and memorization you could pass the exam in about 6 months of study.
