shams93··on MiceWine – run Windows applications and games on Android smartphones
This is especially sweet for owners of high end android tablets, where if you have an android 16 tablet you can then run both windowws legacy apps and full linux desktop on the same device.
shams93··on Ghost artists on Spotify
Not only this, but these music generation models were built with unlicensed content, not only do they bury the original artist they also just rip them off, not one dime no matter how much that artist spent on music lessons, music school, having a high quality instrument, studio gear to record, this is theft plain and simple.
shams93··on LA thinks AI could help decide which homeless people get housing – and don't
It might be an improvement over a system based on those who know people get help and those most in need often never get help because they have no family or a family with no connections.
shams93··on The App Store era must end, and the Mac is the model
What is interesting is that instead of doing this in the google anti trust case they want google to give up chrome and stop developing browser technology full stop, so basically moving in the direction of killing the open web and replacing it with an unfree, weaponized locked in app store duopoly with laws against using browsers.
shams93··on React 19
htmx and python
shams93··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
Depending upon where you wind up living to work remote you could well see an almost 50% cut in life expenses and taxes.
shams93··on We’re receiving about 3,000 reports/hour
I saw what happened on threads, essential CSA material flooding in, very very creepy so I stopped using threads.
shams93··on Trump Attacks Bipartisan Semiconductor Law, a Key Policy Achievement for Biden
Correct me if I'm wrong but he was also behind Section 174 which in 2022 basically put what amounts to a huge tariff on the head of engineers, web developers, etc...
shams93··on Drug overdose deaths fall for 6 months straight, officials wonder what's working
More than like because these opiates are so deadly you are basically wiping out whole huge populations of addicts. I hope rather than that we have government services working like they should and actually healing and saving lives.
shams93··on Legal Marijuana Contains Dangerous Mold. States Approve It Anyway.
The DEA refuses treatment for ADD because forcing ADD patients to resort to cocaine and speed keeps the DEA in business.
shams93··on Legal Marijuana Contains Dangerous Mold. States Approve It Anyway.
Legal cannabis doesn't give billionaires the kind of profit margins they fancy so they would love to use the force of the feds to force medical cannabis patients to be forced to resort to opiates, because for them that's a great investment, and cannabis is crap for them compared to the depth of the opiates addict's affliction.
shams93··on Of course we can tax billionaires
Having had my ability to pay tax destroyed by the newest outsourcing. If we eliminate everyone's profession the billionaires would be the only people who even have an income of any kind to tax.
shams93··on Ask HN: How to quickly make 5k USD
I wish I know I haven't been able to make $1 since 2021 now I am homeless and penniless with 500k in education.
shams93··on The state of GNU/Linux and a case against shared object libraries
However these days its much easier to run a linux desktop on a system that comes with it, some of these laptops have driver issues where they can work but then can run into things like thermal and display issues due to closed code with very complex non-standard low level drivers.
shams93··on The state of GNU/Linux and a case against shared object libraries
That's Fedora, its a bleeding edge experimental distro when it comes to the desktop at least. Ubuntu has become really popular because it is stable and reliable. My friends who use linux to perform live electronic music all use ubuntu studio and have been for over 15 years now.
shams93··on Executives and Research Disagree About Hybrid Work. Why?
Its really hard to force employees into sexual relationships with the "big boss" when everyone is working hundreds or thousands of miles away.
shams93··on Windows 11 24H2 hoards 8.63 GB of junk you can't delete
Yeah thought I needed a new laptop but with XFCE instead of bloated windows I can code as much as I want now with almost 50% more drive space with XFCE than windows.
shams93··on Who Pays for the Arts?
The artists themselves do, in the era of easy creation we are all conceptual artists now.
shams93··on America's Young Men Are Falling Even Further Behind
As a white male in California when I was 18 my UC advisor advised me to "save the world" by killing myself as if I was an extra object to be destroyed.
shams93··on Ask HN: Kotlin SpringBoot vs. Python Django for Min Viable Product
Django is going to get you up and running and in business, while springboot is much harder to deploy.
shams93··on Hi-Tech Bifocals Improved My Eyesight but Made Me Look Like a Dork
This is what happens when you decide designers are no longer necessary.
shams93··on 2M users but no money in the bank
What I did once in the very early 2000s was to white label a free platform so that other people could license the software from us for $$$ to pay for our free flsash game platform in 2001.
shams93··on Ask HN: What is your plan if AI ends coding as a profession in 2-3 years?
If Ai doesn't work out there's going to be such a shortage of engineers in the next 5 years that we'll be asking $5,000 an hour.
shams93··on The Internet Archive has lost its appeal in Hachette vs. Internet Archive
Exactly this is what people don't get it was like a lending library not a free give away.
shams93··on To anyone using Kotlin over Java, why?
I think the biggest thing going for kotlin is the null safety. I know how you feel I have used java since 1996 myself so its like why should I learn something else but in this case I think there are some good arguments for kotlin.
shams93··on Ask HN: Why did GeoCities have that crazy design aesthetic?
We also had a rule that no page could weigh under 26k, although pages by users of Geocities could be larger, all the pages that ran geocities had to be 26kb or less.
shams93··on Ask HN: Why did GeoCities have that crazy design aesthetic?
But to answer where it came from? It came from the limitations of the web at the time - table based layout, low graphic resolutions, browser running under 16 megs (not gigs) of ram.
shams93··on Ask HN: Why did GeoCities have that crazy design aesthetic?
I was on the pre-ipo (and post ipo) design team. So its partly my fault lmfao.
shams93··on Why do we still teach people to calculate?
If we get hit by an EMP blast and get blown into the 19th century those calculation skills would make some rich.
shams93··on I'm Not Switching to Linux
In a lot of cases you can't, many devices are locked in, especially in the arm world, you can't just switch, you have the os baked in which is a great way to cause an ewaste explosion. Like you can't buy an ipad and expect to run linux on it even though its chips are more than capable.
