shampine··on Ask HN: Am I missing out by not being in sillicon valley?
I don't think that is a truthy assessment as I just got a recruiter email in my inbox at $140k for full stack node.js. I think you can easily find both ends of the spectrum. Average seems to be about around $80-115k for most devs in LA.
shampine··on In Defence of WordPress
Our boilerplate does a pretty good job of hiding that we are using WordPress. The only way you can tell via source is W3 Total Cache writing out a comment to the bottom of the page. Oh and WordPress SEO (Yoast) is a dead giveaway too. We see nowhere near the number of bots that our non boilerplate sites do.

shampine··on Santa Monica council votes 7-0 to crack down on Airbnb
My lease covers both subletting and short term rentals. It also covers anyone living there who is not named on the lease, even if I am living there.
shampine··on Santa Monica council votes 7-0 to crack down on Airbnb
I agree with that, but if I owned a building and my renters were using Airbnb, my assumed liability and risk on the property is probably skyrocketing. Also the wear and tear on the property is probably going to accelerate.
shampine··on Santa Monica council votes 7-0 to crack down on Airbnb
Oh I know this is true and I definitely didn't mean it as a blanket statement. But it seems for most of the historic core neighborhood that the buildings are enforcing their own leases/rules.
shampine··on Santa Monica council votes 7-0 to crack down on Airbnb
I live in downtown Los Angeles. In my community of buildings all tenants were served letters that threatened eviction if we put our place up on Airbnb. It is specifically outlined in majority of our leases. Several people I know have been evicted as a result. Regulations aren't even needed some buildings are just taking care of this issue on their own. For my specific building and as a renter, I'm okay with there being no Airbnb places.
shampine··on CloudFlare “Interview Questions”
I think it's just confirmation that we can't know everything and there is always room to learn more.
shampine··on Ask HN: How to cope with depression
I dropped exercise for the past year, worst mistake I've made. Everything changed, my productivity, my happiness, my stress increased, etc. Now I'm forcefully pushing it back upon myself and as a result I feel better, I'm getting things done at an amplified level at work and at home. Once you get in that rhythm of having it you don't realize how important it really is.
shampine··on The Fuck – Correct your previous console command
Check out the only issue open: https://github.com/nvbn/thefuck/issues/1

I like it, but I have to know every command it modifies/checks, I cannot run a blackbox command and hope.

shampine··on Three Types of Harmful Hackathons
I haven't been to a SW in about 3 years. But the last ones I went to were all people who brought their existing fledgling business they were trying to get started. Did who knows what for the weekend. Then just pitched it on demo day. That was maybe 60% of the groups that participated. Really a big let down.
shampine··on Ask HN: What are your unused domain names?

http://precisiongood.com

Not sure what I will do with either, if anything.

shampine··on Bidding farewell to Google Code
We use GitLab Mirrors[1] to keep running syncs of our public repos on GitHub mirrored into our self-hosted GitLab server. Works really well and I highly recommend it.

shampine··on Fired
Just reading the post not knowing who he was made me follow him on Twitter, follow him on GitHub, and I ended up looking through three of his super popular repos, reading the readme and giving him a few stars. So ya, he's going to go on to do better things without question. I read a lot of blog posts per day and that kind of immediate desire to research [the author] is uncommon.
shampine··on What happened to all the non-programmers?
I'm in DTLA, everyone is in fashion, film, photography, or works in the service industry attempting to get into the former. I can count on one hand how many devs I know in my neighborhood. I am surrounded by way more lawyers.

But that is okay, and I actually prefer it. Else my life would be completely monotone.

shampine··on What is the best hard drive?
Sadly you could only flash them if they were still working, you had to ship them if they bricked. I saw the bulletin and promptly flashed all mine before failure. Big pita tho.
shampine··on What is the best hard drive?
Are you referring to the botched firmware ones (I think the firmware revision was SD15)?

If so, at the time (~2008) I had an HTPC with 10 1TB-1.5TB drives with 6 of 10 affected by the firmware issues. I was able to successfully flash all my drives at the time with no data loss.

shampine··on What Happens When You Install the Top Download.com Apps
I would assume it has grown in the last few years, I also would wager a guess that most of these are related/derivatives of each other.
shampine··on What Happens When You Install the Top Download.com Apps
I'm not familiar with Malwarebytes Antirootkit, but TDSSKiller from Kaspersky searches for 1 single rootkit, TDSS, and performs a removal. I haven't done this type of work in a while but 3-4 years ago it was the defacto tool of choice for dealing with MBR infections.
shampine··on What Happens When You Install the Top Download.com Apps
Don't forget TDSSKiller and Norton Power Eraser. Super useful tools for checking MBRs.
shampine··on Tips for Intermediate Git Users
Agreed. I was expecting more substance in the hooks department, diffs, or other things off the beaten path. This just seems like a list of the basic git commands.
shampine··on A Teenager’s View on Social Media
It will, I can think of a ton of services I've used in the past that one day you just stop logging on. You don't even remember the last day of using them, just one day you stop. Then slowly everyone stops. (E.g., AOL, AIM, Geocities, IRC^, MySpace, and most recently Path & Instagram).

I assume the same will happen in my life for Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, etc. One day I will just stop.

^I use IRC for dev stuff now, but there was a good 5 years where it was no longer a part of my life. I was a gamer who played CS in the early 2000s.

shampine··on Why Oakland's a Tech Start-up Game Changer
Downtown LA here, it's dirty. Extremely dirty. But a wonderful place otherwise.
shampine··on Air Fares 101 – Why do fares change all the time?
This was for mid january, so about 4 weeks out. Leaving on a Friday and returning on Monday.
shampine··on Map the Banks
Great example of this was the map they built that show links to subsidiaries and others: http://opencorporates.com/viz/financial
shampine··on Air Fares 101 – Why do fares change all the time?
I just looked at round trip tickets LAX->RDU for $329 on a direct flight. Flying is cheap.
shampine··on Uber Flunks the Better Business Bureau Test
You also have to type the multiplier, e.g. "2.5" to continue.
shampine··on Final – A credit card built for the 21st century
Bank of America also has disposable numbers for their credit cards, one reason I still keep my card with them. You just pick how long the number is active for (min 1 month) and it spits out 16 digits. I use it for all my online transactions.
shampine··on Reddit
I'm a mod of quite a few subs. We have to submit spammers to /r/spam. It is a bot run sub that basically does link counts from your history, if you hit a threshold, you will get shadowbanned. Submitting a user there who has been around for say 1 year with 250/250 karma, they probably will not get shadowbanned as they don't fit the algorithm. Mod a sub for long enough and you can instantly look at an account and tell whether or not they would get shadowbanned. There are tons of egregious spammers on the site who will never get banned because they don't fit the mold.
shampine··on Ello: You are not a product.
Back buttons? Where ello is going we don't need back buttons.
shampine··on Wordpress 4.0
I too use WordPress for work daily, I have a lot of hope for the JSON API from Ryan McCue that would allow us to use a frontend framework like Angular. The only benefit it would have over Thermal is it is supposed to get baked into core someday.

Either way, my disdain for WordPress grows slightly everyday.
