shampine··on The Rails Doctrine
I'm not sure I agree that makes it a Rails problem, more of a developers who happen to use this tool problem.
shampine··on Dear GitHub
I think a lot of companies forced this because for a while the api permissions weren't granular enough when dealing with private repos on organizations. They added the "Third-party application access policy" sometime in the last year or two. I might be wrong though.
shampine··on Common: Co-Living Startup from a General Assembly Founder
Everyone has different priorities. Big cities come with benefits that you have to pay for to enjoy. Different strokes for different folks, you can't really compare the two at just a price point and size. There is so much more.
shampine··on Chicago and Los Angeles Are Next Up for Google Fiber
Look into that, my building on 7th & LA now offers TWC. It took a while though.
shampine··on Chicago and Los Angeles Are Next Up for Google Fiber
This was me for a long time in DTLA, my only choice was AT&T for $50 a month for 8/1. Now I have Time Warner and I pay $55 for 200/20. Much happier.
shampine··on Paris Shootings and Explosions Kill Over 100, Police Say
It's still hands down the best feature of the entire product. I don't use Facebook for much, nor do I particularly care for it. But this is an amazing use of social graph and the internet. Whomever at FB came up with the concept, much respect.
shampine··on A $2 photo from a California junk shop is the ‘holy grail of Western Americana’
Probably not no, they probably picked it up in some bulk purchase. If it came from a garage sale or the like, then maybe? But a junk shop deals in this world, that this, that they should be aware could have something amongst all their stuff that is actually worth a fortune.
shampine··on Twitter announces layoffs
From what everyone else in the thread has said and what Google states, about 10%.
shampine··on Twitter Names Jack Dorsey Chief Executive
I think that was more common to hear as people didn't seem to understand @messages and #hashtags. So when they saw:

> .@jack #awesome

They didn't know what that meant. Now that hashtags and @ style messaging are just about everywhere, I don't think it is a valid theory.

shampine··on I created a fake business and bought it an online reputation
> Kudos to the Yelp team for keeping the quality control strong and providing a great service.

Well that's not something you hear (read) everyday.

shampine··on Google Is 2B Lines of Code, All in One Place
No, it specifically says the opposite:

"Potvin says certain highly sensitive code—stuff akin to the Google’s PageRank search algorithm—resides in separate repositories only available to specific employees."

shampine··on Amazon Web Services in Plain English
I'm going to start saying Elastic Breadstick and see if my PM starts using the phrase to solve everything. He likes buzzwords.
shampine··on Having Won Over VCs, Y Combinator Turns to LPs
I assume it means Limited Partner, though you're right, it should have been defined prior to its use in the article.
shampine··on The time is right to re-examine the L.A. freeway
Right because most HOVs have dedicated exits (I'm picturing 495 in D.C.) that avoid the cross traffic. Unfortunately we don't have that luxury on any of our HOV/Fastrak lanes that I drive.
shampine··on The time is right to re-examine the L.A. freeway
Actually as someone who drives the 110N home everyday the HOV makes everyone worse off in my opinion. Every entrance to the HOV during rush hour makes cross-lane patterns that end up bringing traffic to halt around them, but in between entrances it flows properly. Entering a freeway and immediately crossing 5 lanes of traffic to enter the HOV is extremely disruptive to the flow.
shampine··on Show HN: Happy Scale – Use moving averages for accurate weight loss predictions
I think that is an error in the content, it says hit the triple line button in the upper right. Well one half of that is wrong, so if the + button did allow you to add a weight, then it meant to say plus instead of triple line.
shampine··on GitHub Desktop is now available
I also prefer a nice visual diff and branching so usually depending on what project I am working in I always have Gitlab or Github open in my browser. Everything else is done on the CLI.
shampine··on The Hamburger Menu Doesn't Work
I keep reading these articles about how awful hamburgers are but so far not a single one addresses menus that have more than 3-5 items. I manage sites that we have kicked around ideas for how to deal with the menu better, but the size of what is in that menu makes all the proposed ideas I've seen not feasible. So I'm right there with you that it is unfortunate, I wish these articles had more in way of solutions than just regurgitating what we've heard for a while, hamburgers suck.
shampine··on A visual timeline of programming languages
In Chrome I see Java but not Coldfusion. Weird. http://i.imgur.com/RjF1pOP.png
shampine··on A visual timeline of programming languages
It's there, 1995.
shampine··on GitLab raises 1.5M
When you view a repo if you click the readme tab then come back later, the readme tab is the default. I'm not sure if this is stored short term or long-term but it was a featured added in the last 3-4 releases iirc.
shampine··on Ask HN: How can I trust Google Analytics?
You also need to add regex filters for Campaign Source like:

"semalt\.|social.?buttons\.|hulfingtonpost\.|best-seo-(solution|offer|service)|free.traffic|buy-cheap-online|prodvigator|cenokos\.|ranksonic\.|adcash\.|share.?buttons\.|blackhatworth|buttons-for.?website|darodar\.|100dollars-seo"

To help keep down the spam.

shampine··on Hard-Core Career Advice For A 13-Year-Old
This is the direction that interests me most and what I will want to be doing in my 30s. Still have a ways to go as I started in the frontend and now I'm doing mostly full stack work.
shampine··on Hard-Core Career Advice For A 13-Year-Old
I think my case toes the line. I graduated in '09 with a BS in Applied Economics, most of my work was statistics/stata oriented. I had planned on going to law school. Well the floor fell out from under everything the summer before I graduated. What was I to do? No one wanted to hire me, all my work through college was in sysadmin/computer repair work. I was just a generalist and going for more school (MBA or law) didn't guarantee work, just more debt.

It took me two years of rambling around and finally I went back towards what I was always good with, computers. Flash forward 6 years later and I'm a developer who is making a comfortable living. I'm glad I have my degree in econ, I love the field, but I do feel like there is window of us who did get screwed as we made choices on the current economy, not the future economy 4 years later.

No worries, I guess I'll try again in 3 weeks. :)
shampine··on Shutting Down a Service with 500M Requests per Month
Maybe we should make an app where you put in all the apps that you have on your iPhone to find your perfect match. We'll call it appxappxappxappxappxappxappxapp.

Not for me, I was able to get to the confirmation email, now it is just stuck in a loop.
