shakyshakyshaky··on Norweigan oil fund
The fund was fed by oil profits, but has now divested from oil-centric companies and invests heavily in renewable energy.

shakyshakyshaky··on Twisted graphene exhibits previously-unseen form of magnetism
It's gonna be really cool to see graphene used... in 60 years, when it's possible to manufacture in sufficient quantities

I, somewhat fancifully, keep two flashdrives with a wikipedia data dump on them "just in case"

shakyshakyshaky··on Feeding 10B People Will Require Genetically Modified Food
the issue isn't even getting everyone a cellphone, it's getting a lot of people a new, almost identical cell phone every year.
shakyshakyshaky··on Black Homeownership Drops to All-Time Low
certainly it musn't be an all-time low, considering that near 0 african americans owned homes prior to 1863 and near 0 african peoples were in america in the 1600s
shakyshakyshaky··on 'My son spent £3,160 in one game'
most children are using their parents' apple IDs.
shakyshakyshaky··on Facebook is embedding tracking data inside the photos you download
can confirm, currently maintaining presence and interaction on two accounts for each of facebook, twitter, and instagram, in order to not out myself to family and prospective employers
shakyshakyshaky··on Bullet Time
Much of the time it was used to create full screen transparent links to other videos, or other obnoxious things decreasing QoL. Still sad to see it go though.
shakyshakyshaky··on US mayors adopt resolution to not pay hackers over ransomware attacks
This type of acausal deal only works for single-target attacks. If a bad actor is searching for a victim and sees two potential targets, one of which has resolved to never cede to their demands and one who wasn't commented, they will attack the ambivalent party.

Malware is not a single target attack. Whether or not it's probably beneficial to attack one of these cities is not considered. Instead of making gestures, these mayors should be investing in better cybersecurity.

shakyshakyshaky··on Hostyoself: Server in a browser – host from your computer, your phone, etc.
I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it reeks of manufactured support.
shakyshakyshaky··on Ask HN: What are your favorite YouTube channels to learn stuff?
Some More News is very much "Here's an opinion you already have, let's be sardonic at the possibility others don't share it". I'd recommend Riley J. Dennis instead, for her excellent discussion of gender and sexuality.
shakyshakyshaky··on Ask HN: What are your favorite YouTube channels to learn stuff?
mark rober's quality has gone downhill fast. To the point of staging multiple videos and using obnoxious clickbait.
shakyshakyshaky··on “Amazon’s choice” recommends fraudulent listing
I've known an amazon worker who worked on the amazon's choice functionality at one point- it's all algorithmic with little to no human interaction. It's also skewed towards the products amazon stands to profit the most off of, obviously.
shakyshakyshaky··on How to run a small social network site for your friends
were loyalists invited to the continental congress? Sometimes there's simply no merit in allowing certain people into certain spaces.
shakyshakyshaky··on The wrong kind of trees: Ireland's afforestation meets resistance
It seems to me that planting historically native trees would be best for preserving cultural landscapes and identity. Ireland is absolutely beautiful, but the sheer breadth of deforested rocky landscape now being used for sheep pastures is depressing.
shakyshakyshaky··on African leaders launch landmark 55-nation trade zone
very reductive to say that africa is poor due to statism and not centuries of imperialism, both actual and economic
shakyshakyshaky··on Grubhub is using fake websites to drive up commission fees from real businesses
More like pitching a stall outside your local Costco, calling it Costco, and charging dimwits a fee to enter the warehouse
shakyshakyshaky··on “Twitter has an algorithm that creates harassment all by itself”
additionally, there's no real need for technically public discussions to be promoted or made more public, so it's not really a failure state if the algorithm doesn't promote a high reply rate exchange between two users exclusively.
shakyshakyshaky··on FBI agent accidentally reveals own 8chan posts
The Jacobin has always been a fan of calling out US imperialism.
shakyshakyshaky··on Hong Kong Protests Live Updates: Police Violence Puts Government on Defensive
America is incredible effective at suppressing protest. Not just as the protest is happening, but before it begins.
shakyshakyshaky··on States are looking to jam T-Mobile and Sprint’s proposed $26.5B merger
Break up Verizon and AT&T.
shakyshakyshaky··on Work-Life Balance Is a Myth. Do This Instead
This article smacks of corporate apologia. A lot of jobs just genuinely suck, and no amount of cognitive dissonance will change that.
shakyshakyshaky··on How Anne Wojcicki’s 23andMe Will Mine Its Giant DNA Database
And as we all know, insurance companies never do illegal things
shakyshakyshaky··on The richest 10% of households now represent 70% of all U.S. wealth
Now I don't like the terminology "elites" as it lends itself to populism, but in this framework it's useful.

Soon enough, the elites will not be overthrowable. The advantage that the many have over the few is the retraction of their consent; without housekeepers, farmers, maintenance workers, the rich have historically been forced to capitulate because they couldn't maintain their standard of living without the workers. With the rising tide of automation, I can see a very near future where the workers are simply obsolete, and the division between classes will become so wide as to be completely un-transversable. Those in control of the farmland and the machines that tend it will have no use for the lower classes any more. That's why we need to work on decentralized production, with households owning a production factor of their own which will keep them producing value. Think decentralized factories.

also, this is a really interesting project; would you mind allowing me to interview you over IM at some point? I'm trying to improve my breadth of knowledge by doing deep dives into unfamiliar areas.

shakyshakyshaky··on Buyer's Remorse: High Debt and Low Pay Leave Some College Grads Rueful
Provided a safety net? Collectively decided that education shouldn't be a gamble, and that the way we classify degrees as more or less useful is flawed? Funded more rigorous public education? Reduce the portion of labor value shaved off by executives and shareholders so that workers can live comfortably off of their labor without government assistance? As of now, society is doing practically nothing. Don't act like there's nothing more we can do.
